A play likely to have changed the early momentum was the long throw to Montgomery, which he caught, bobbled and dropped.  He had beaten the defender and might have scored if he had been able to hold on to the ball.  But even if he had been tackled immediately it looked to me like a 40-yard gain.  This was the counterpart of the pass to Rector vs. Oregon, only Rector held on.

Ty's dropping the pass may have been part of the early jitters our guys seemed to experience, which surprised me.  The $C PA announcer and band got their team and the $C fans worked up like the Orc army in Lord of the Rings.  To me it was absurd (although kind of fun to watch) but the atmosphere seemed to affect our guys.

One amusing detail I noticed near kickoff was what looked like dumpy $C song girls instead of the usual eye candy they put on the field.  One of the few things iliked about $C in the 70s was that their song girls were pretty spectacular.  So at first this was very disappointing.  But the short-yardage group turned out to be alumnae squeezed into their old tight outfits.

Montgomry could've had 3 or 4 more catches if he was on point last night. But I don't see anyone calling for him to be replaced.

IMO, Hogan & Montgomery are great players who just had bad games on the road.

Our receivers looked better because in the recent past the Whalens, Ertz and Fleener were.  Montgomery does have a "hands" problem.  Not the kind that relegates him to the bench, but the kind that makes him an uneven contributor.  He seems to have no problem with catching on the return team, but last night was...worrying.  Maybe a classic 'bad game" at the wrong time.

And it was Luck throwing to those previous guys, not Hogan.  Hogan is neither a disaster nor even sub-par.  He's a good athlete with some limitations.  His long throws require a long wind-up and it's textbook example of the difference throwing mechanics make.  It seems there is more chance involved in the perfect meeting of ball and receiver than w/  a Luck pass.  On some key throws and one int last night, the ball was thrown behind Montgomery.  And he was throwing against better athletes than in a lot of games we played.  But right now he's better than anyone else we've got.  No better way to hand Cal and ND victory than start Crower or Lloyd.  We are a very good team that can win most of its games.  But no more than 10, maybe 11.

Hogan's knowledge of the playbook makes him almost a lock as next year's QB.  But he's a winner, he's ours and he's here now.

My guess is that Hogan's limitations and the team's circumstances will probably cost next year's team a total of 3 losses.  It was tough watching him alternate between erratic and good execution.

I often wonder why sports fans expect the players in their vicarious relationships to be at the top of their game, when they aren't listed on the injury report. I think everyone here can remember times during the last week when they accomplished more and less than they expected. Chances are there was something trivial, like a minor headache, that affected your performance at some point. Why would football players be any different?
