I think everyone knew Kline would leave. He can play two years at a FBS school or three if he steps down a level. That would make him a pretty nice acquisition for a program with a need for QBs. Goff appears to be a decent QB, so no real shame in coming in as the #2 behind him.
Goff will always be ahead of Kline AND the team is losing big. Who wants to be the QB with the baseball cap while playing on a team that will go 3-9 or 2-10 next year? If he waits a year the transfer options would all vanish.
The good news for Dykes is that Kline's departure should make it easier for him to find a good QB to be the starter for the next UCB head coach.
Goff will always be ahead of Kline AND the team is losing big. Who wants to be the QB with the baseball cap while playing on a team that will go 3-9 or 2-10 next year? If he waits a year the transfer options would all vanish.

I am clearly not as close to it as others, but the Sonny Dykes era reminds me a lot of the Walt Harris era at Stanford.Â

Before they cleansed the post, it carried information that Kline, and linemen Okafor and Tagaloa had either asked for or been granted releases. I don't know much about Okafor and a later post contradicted that information. But no one disputed that Freddy Tagaloa was one and many opined it wasn't much of a loss. For those who can't stay awake during a full recruiting cycle, Tagaloa was interested in Stanford and to some point Stanford was interested in him. But in the end there was no offer and Tagaloa committed at Cal. The guy was h-u-g-e for a HS player and apparently got bigger in his first years at Cal. But it looks like our player evaluation was better. We got Peat and Murphy as consolation prizes. Now the k.al people are saying Freddy is mainly BIG but can't move all that well and is particularly unsuited to Dykes' offensive system.

Tagaloa was a big stiff from the start. He is unsuited to play OT in any system currently in use in football.... A big, slow sloth (is that redundant?). I have been saying this for over a year......
There will be more transfers (I am guessing between 3-5). This is no surprise given the results we saw this year.........

Well, if the number bubbles up to 4-6 or more there are a few problems. #1) The incoming recruiting class is not that big, so it is possible UCB will need to either leave the slots vacant or load up on JCs. #2) All of those newbies might have a hard time in Dykes' system since it is not that common. #3) And this is the biggie...Are the transfers happily attending class? If not those transfers could really zing UCB's rather fragile APR.

Sorry, should have been clear about the transfers I thought would impact UCB. I meant if you are a disgruntled current player. You hate coach Dykes and you hate losing. You have come to yearn going to Idaho, SDSU, Coastal Carolina or whatever. You have known for several weeks that you will be leaving at the end of the football season. If you are in that frame of mind did you really study for classes at UCB recently? Are you really going to try to pass very difficult classes just so that UCB's APR stays in the safe zone?
How many "soon-to-be" transfers no longer in good academic standing could UCB absorb and keep the APR safe? Not too concerned about it, but I thought maybe someone at UCB might have run the numbers.

I agree. On the Drive it said that ASU had a bunch of key JC transfers - that they really worked hard and made a big difference.

I agree. On the Drive it said that ASU had a bunch of key JC transfers - that they really worked hard and made a big difference.

Yeah, maybe...but the difference was that ASU was nowhere near as down-in-the-dumps as the 59ers currently are. Remember, a lot of people had ASU as the Pac-12 South winner and top 15 team in preseason before Erikson was fired.

Wasn't Tagaloa a team captain this year? It's surprising to me that he would be chosen as captain if it's so clear that he's a big stiff who can't play. Players usually don't give leadership roles to guys who obviously can't play.

Terry - You raise a good point. One that I wondered about at the time the announcement was made. If you saw Tagaloa play this year, you would know what I mean when I called him a stiff. By the time the Big Game was played, he was buried on the bench. He was the worst OT I have seen in years.....

A couple of years ago, I was in a negative-star "hotel" in the northeast, in a workout room with an elliptical and a television set. The set only got three channels, but one of them was Trent Dilfer's QB camp. It so happened that the episode I was watching had 24 QBs, all of whom looked like crew-cut Johnny Unitas except for one long-haired kid, Zach Kline, going to Cal. Kline was considered back of the pack early on in the camp, but materially made up ground and by the end was one of Dilfer's favorites.
