In case, you guys from outside New England missed this.  A Harvard student emailed in a bomb threat to avoid exams.  Two thoughts:

1. Guess he was worried about getting an A minus
2. A more computer savvy MIT or Stanford student would have covered their tracks better.

He used Harvard's wireless network to create the secret IP address.  Yikes.  He should be out of there on general principles.

On Monday, my younger son was accepted to Princeton, following his older brother.  So I'm in for another four years of head slapping over grades...

Their was no grade inflation at Stanford in my chemistry classes or my calculus classes.

My English classes were another story.

My frosh year, I had an English teacher who promised all of us that if we worked hard, did multiple rewrites, listened closely, it was possible to earn a "C" in his class.  He said, "I'm not promising anything, but some of you may even get "B's."  As for A's?  He said "An 'A' is a publishable paper.  When one of you produces something that can be published, we can talk about an 'A.'"

True to his word, he gave out 16 C's, four D's, one F and 5 B's.  No A's.  A good friend of mine had straight A's through school, except for the C in that class.

I remember a similar claim being made about Stanford many years ago. Someone had compared the grade point averages of graduating students to average grades given 20 years earlier and discovered grade inflation. The Daily ran an article on this and a few days later a letter to the editor pointed out that this was not a good comparison. Of course the graduating students had higher averages than the average grade given. Students receiving low grades are less likely to graduate.

There was definitely grade inflation during my 4 years ('79 - '83).  I got a D on my very first mid-term and graduated with a 3.6 GPA.
