According to my profile, I've posted 0.081 posts per day, or about one every twelve days. I've posted a total of 1300 times. So if I multiply 1300 by twelve, I get 15,600 days, or nearly 43 years. I know I've been on this board a while, but unless Yvonne invented the internet, I doubt it's been 42.7 years. Anyone have an explanation for this? Anyone? Bueller?

Oh, and Merry Christmas everybody, and good vill towards men. (And yust at that moment, someone slugs Uncle Ben. Any other Yorgy Yorgesen fans out there?)

The board doesn't know when you joined, so it uses "0" on the POSIX time scale, which happens to be January 1, 1970, 12:00am UTC.

The first Arpanet host-to-host communication was 1969-10-29 (PST).  I heard the TV announcer for a Stanford-UCLA water polo game this year credit this first message to the two schools, which took me a bit by surprise, because I always hear it as SRI and UCLA.  But, at the time, SRI was "Stanford Research Institute" (founded by Stanford in 1946 as a 501©(3) not-for-profit corporation) and still associated with Stanford (until 1970; still later the name changed to "SRI International" was in 1977).  (Incidentally, Al Gore was first elected to the US House in 1976.)

It was another 4.5 years until I first used the Arpanet  (so I admit I wasn't reading the Cardboard in 1969)

(And, if you didn't notice, CompSci87's 1-Jan 1970 00:00 UTC  = 31-Dec 1969 16:00 PST, which explains why we usually see the 1969 date.  As he said, that's Date 0 for Posix, but there have been, and likely will be, different Date 0 for other systems.)

So the board is using some bogus number close to 0 on the POSIX scale, but not exactly 0. Dunno why; maybe something went wrong in importing join dates into the current board software from what was used in the past.

p.s. One guess: we are seeing the join *year* interpreted as seconds from the POSIX epoch. For example, 33 minutes and 23 seconds = 2003 seconds.  I looked at the join dates for a few people and they were all somewhere between 2003 and 2011 seconds after the epoch, which would fit this theory.

The first WebBBS, which was probably whatever the BootBoard was using immediately before it was bought by what was then called Rivals — which is different from the service currently called Rivals. It was the first free software I could find that added password protection. None of the messages moved from that platform to the next, which as YaBB, another PERL based CGI package. The new software offered private messaging, polls, and customizable templates.

After a few years, I wanted to add some more features and extensibility, so after some research, I chose the current platform, SMF, which is PHP based, open sourced (I don't know which license, and can't be bothered to look it up). When we moved from YaBB to SMF, the messages, private messages, user names, passwords, avatars, post counts, and signatures all transferred over. The only thing that didn't transfer was the start date. So, the post counts are from YaBB forward, but the start dates are from the date we moved to SMF, with everyone set at 0.
