Ran a 4.43 40 at Indy today, a faster time than some guy called DAT.

The NFL official time is list as 4.49 for Gaffney. Which is still very good.

Which really goes to show that Stanford is not getting respect in the local media for individual or team speed. I doubt many Stanford fans would have predicted that Gaffney would outrun DAT and Lee, and I am sure that most outside of the Bay Area would just assume that the speedster stars at Oregon and USC were faster than the power RB at Stanford. FWIW - I seem to recall that others on the Stanford team were faster than Gaffney. So if Gaffney was faster than the speedsters at other Pac-12 schools know for speed, and Gaffney was not the fastest person on the Stanford squad...(insert your favorite conclusion here).

Well, I think part of it is people don't like thinking critically about metrics -- they invent a metric to approximate whatever quality it is they want to measure and forget that it's just a substitution. What we mean by "speed" is complicated, right? In a football sense, it's not too often you run in a straight line unmolested for 40 yards. So while Gaffney might be faster in this metric, I think DAT's superior change of direction, lateral quickness and explosiveness makes him football faster.
(The classic example, of course, is Mr. 4.60 40 Jerry Rice.)

Well, according to this, Gaffney was a top performer in the 3-cone drill and 60 yard shuttle, so he brings speed and agility to the table.

maybe they'll sign Gaffney. They need a runner who is tough and Trent Richardson isn't it. The only question mark on Gaffney, and it's not trivial, is his fumble stats. I personally don't care that much about the stat, but I reckon the NFL would. The other thing against the Colts drafting Gaffney is maybe they should be picking up quality OL instead. Who knows, a decent OL could turn even old Trent into an adequate RB.

Did Gaffney really fumble that often considering how often he carried the rock? Not to mention the fact that defenses stacked the box all season so he probably ran through more grabbing hands than typical.

on NFL combine, it seems like Gaffney has been the fastest riser for Pac-12 RBs and Kadeem Carey and DAT the biggest decliners.

Gaffney will probably still be available in the 3rd, and I don't think the Colts need 3rd-round-level OL talent, they need 1st and 2nd. So getting some OL and Gaffney is a possibility.
But I doubt they draft a RB that high.

The Colts do not have a 1st round pick, so they are hurting on the O-line for a while to come is my guess.
I was also really impressed with Sankey's numbers. It hurts to say that about a Husky, but that kid may have vaulted Carey as well.

I'm not obsessing over this, but the thing I could see NFL scouts looking at are the total number of fumbles, not just the lost ones. I know that the way Gaffney runs and where they had him run might tend to put him at hazard, but lets be honest, he gave us a few heart-stopping moments when the ball got loose but was recovered. Was that just luck? Is the concern just losing the ball, not what happened to it subsequently.Â
Or, maybe it's not significant. In that case I'll switch my concern to whether he'd have a longer and less risky career if he played pro baseball.

good points RR. not sure about baseball though due to age and some other baseball shortcomings. I think Gaffney's heart is more towards football (or at least that is my read based on his interviews).

The Colts have too many needs the supercede RB. Yes, their running game was putrid, butmy understanding is the OLine was the bigger culprit there. They also need help in the secondary and defense overall. About the only place they don't need upgrades is WR/TE/QB. I think they'll build their OLine and defense this off season.

I mentioned this on reddit recently and a Colts fan said that their tackles are actually decent, its the interior of the line that needs help. I also thought that Miami had already released him.

The NFL Combine lists DAT (4.50) but not Gaffney (4.49) as a top performer in the 40 yard dash. Is an Oregon homer running those stats?
