Nice interview with Duane Akina

Like everybody here, I loved Mason's mentality and had my doubts it could be replaced. Maybe Anderson would be a good DC, but those DBs are so damn important to develop, and it's usually one of the toughest positions for Stanford to recruit.
After reading that interview with Akina, I'm pretty well blown away. He wasn't even trying to sell himself and Stanford, merely answering questions. Still, those answers made me think "could there be a better DB coach in the country?" I mean he obviously has the track record of performance, but his answers and what he says makes clear why he is so good. I have a feeling Akina is just as powerful a force as a recruiter as he is a pure coach, and he will have an impact in recruiting as well. Not predicting he'll flip Garrett Taylor, but I don't think he'll be giving up either.
If I'm a Stanford DB right now, I can't wait to practice and learn as much as I can from Akina.
One point on this hire from a Shaw perspective... I love the fact Shaw hired Akina without having met him before. Fans are always concerned about "ol' boy networks" determining coaching hires. It's nice to see some evidence Shaw isn't averse to hiring guys simply based on their qualifications, without regard to previous relationship history.

Quote:"I can just remember all those quarterbacks: Troy Aikman was at UCLA, Rodney Peete was at USC, Chris Chandler was at Washington, Timm Rosenbach was at Washington State, Bill Musgrave was at Oregon, Erik Wilhelm was at OSU, Troy Taylor was at Cal, Paul Justin was at Arizona State, and Stanford had a quarterback just about every year. "
Those were my memories, too. By God, every game I went to in the mid 80's, there was Stanford with a quarterback behind the guy who hiked the ball.

I'm also really excited after reading that interview. Here's the part that jumped out for me:
I've always noticed that players from certain programs always seem to talk about their teammates and spread the praise around. It's obviously something that is taught, so it's nice to see that Akina will be part of that at Stanford.
Quote:Because as I say to my players, you're a double major: You've come for your academic major, but you've also come here to major in defensive back play. Because you can make a living doing this. I've seen guys make a living doing this. My job is that when they leave here, they've reached their potential as a player. That means they're physical, they're tough, they're smart, they can cover, they're good teammates, they can understand the locker room and how to be a good teammate, they can deflect attention to teammates. All of the above.

Please clear the field! The game is not over!

I'm pretty sure anyone familiar with the Texas program (e.g. oman et al.) will agree that Akina is one of the crown jewels of this Stanford recruiting class...he was also co-DC (with Gene Chizik) for the national championship Longhorn team over U$C on Jan. 1st, 2006.
Dunno how Texas will do, but Stanford is on track to retain the title of DB U. Maybe Sherman will come back and take a few tips from Akina.
