Just back from the game ....
Great write-up Garvin. I won\'t try to add to it but I thought folks might enjoy hearing about some of the other things going on in the stadium.
* Too bad all of you 70\'s era Cardinals weren\'t there this evening. The 1970/71 Rose Bowl team was honored at half. Looked like there were about 25 or so of the team there including (of course) Plunkett and Ralston. Both go to most of the games anyway and Ralston has seats near us in section 114. Some fun highlights of the Rose Bowl season were played but somehow they missed the infamous SJS game. :-) Lot\'s of thunderchickens were in evidence - I recognized two but I\'m sure those others standing nearby must have been linemen.
* John Lynch was at the game as part of his Stanford Hall of Fame induction He looked like he could still be playing and enjoyed himself on the sidelines. John was interviewed on the sideline and was highly complimentary of Luck - he mentioned that his transition to Safety from QB was an easy choice since his arm was nothing like Luck\'s. Nice compliments for Luck to receive from a guy that played at the next level. Brevin Knight was also in this year\'s class but not at today\'s game.
* Sighted along the sidelines - Jayne Appel, wearing a large "boot" - guess she\'s still healing. She had two other players (RGO was one of them? ) with here.
* The band show poked fun at the Pac 10 expansion and noted the Pac 8 started going downhill with the admission of the non-Pacific based Arizona. The band ranks were dressed as various Mario characters (Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Mushrooms, etc) but that didn\'t figure into either band show.
* The stadium\'s sunnyside had sparse sections at game time but filled up somewhat by the end of the first quarter. Not a sell out - there were empty sections particularly in the upper deck.
* The UofA crowd was pretty quiet - not a lot for them to cheer about.
* I\'m surprised that Loukas didn\'t get in this game. He had his helmet on and was ready to play throughout the 4th quarter but the Arizona no-huddle seemed to have given Harbaugh just enough of a scare to keep his starter in. Still, all those Luck run calls in the 4th scared the heck out of me! When Luck ran up the middle on an option and characteristically refused to  slide I had visions of our season going up in smoke.
* One of our kick-offs went through the uprights .... Niiiiiice.
* Lots of student interest - Stanford stadium on gameday is definitely a be-there event on campus.
* The Stanford women\'s crew squad received a National Sportsmanship award during the 3rd quarter transition for their rallying together with the Cal team to help the Cal coxswain\'s fight against cancer. The parents of the fallen player were also on the field for the ceremony.
* The ABC skycam that is suspended over the field and zips around during the game is REALLY annoying for spectactors. Sometimes it\'s only 4 to 5 feet above the players heads. I hope it took some good shots for those of you watching on TV cause it\'s a big distraction to those of us there.

I was at the WBB exhibition game before going to the football game. Jayne was there with her boot on too, along with Morgan Clyburn, JJ Hones, and Ros Gold-Onwude. (Thanks to folks on the Bootleg WBB board for confirming the latter three. They were too far away for me to be sure I was seeing who I thought I was.)

A Stanford professor friend of our was over for dinner tonight, and he said his undergrad students are football-mad. The 60s are back (except the team is playing a whole lot better)... 8-)

It\'s a good thing the students are catching football fever since as Ted Miller notes in his game write-up, the rest of the Bay Area prefers to watch on their couch (or not).

The ESPN3 feed, though not in HD, did not cut away until after they showed a shot of Luck et al. singing the alma mater with the band.
*The* shot Criner took was about as awesome as Luck taking out that $C linebacker.
Owusu\'s fingertip catch of the long bomb was amazing. Â He\'d misjudged over which shoulder the pass would be coming, switched sides, and made the play. Â Luck correctly threw the pass where Owusu could shield the ball from the defender, otherwise bad things could have happened. Â
Anyone else think that fumble-turned-incomplete-pass call was bogus? Â The review was to determine whether the Arizona receiver was down before he lost control of the ball (which he wasn\'t), but then the ruling became an incomplete pass. Â I thought the receiver had made \'a football move\' before sliding down, but...eh, what do I know. Â Maybe taking steps and sliding is the new non-football thing to do.

With Oklahoma, Bama, and Utah all losing however, perhaps the voters will really sit down and reevaluate all the 1 loss teams on their merits. Unlikely, but one can hope.

Also, Texas getting dominated by KState should go against them. Again, I somehow doubt the voters will really take it all into account.

Regarding attendance -- There were a lot of empty seats at kickoff, but the crowd filled in nicely. I thought it was a good crowd. Go back and look at attendance for Stanford-Arizona games in the last 10-12 years. Arizona consistently draws 30K to 33K (with the exception of the first year in the new stadium, when we had a one-time boost from the new stadium). Tonight, we had a much bigger crowd -- over 43K. Way more people than we get for Arizona normally. They were late-arriving, and it wasn\'t a sellout, but it was a good, active crowd, and there was a good feel in the stadium. Much different from two weeks ago against WSU. Attendance is growing. We\'re making progress. As I\'ve posted a number of times, it takes a while for attendance patterns to change. It\'s not going to happen all at once just because Ted Miller thinks it should. But we\'re getting there. I don\'t give a darn what Ted Miller thinks.
