Looks right now like we're doing three roadies this year, Michigan, ASU & Stanford.  We've done Michigan and ASU before but this is the first time visiting The Farm.  First question is airport recommendation.  San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose?  Other?  Also we typically try not to rent a car when possible and use local transit to get around.  How easy is it to get from San Francicso to Stanford on gameday?

1. Oakland is probably a bit too much of a schlep; I'd avoid unless the price were dramatically cheaper. SF and SJ are probably approximately the same distance from Stanford, but I believe -- and others can correct me -- that public transit connections are better from SFO than SJ.

2. It depends on where you're coming from in SF, but you can take Caltrain from the Embarcadero to Palo Alto and have a reasonable walk to Stanford Stadium.

You can fly in to either SJC or SFO, and get to Stanford via CalTrain. Both will stop at Stanford Stadium on game days. At SFO, you'll take a BART train to Milbrae and hop on CalTrain from there. From SJC, you'll take the free Airport Flyer shuttle to the San Jose CalTrain station.

a lot depends on where you are staying.

If you are staying in the City of San Francisco I would fly through either SFO or OAK, SJC is a long haul from the City.  You can get to/from both  SFO and OAK from the City on either mass transit or a shuttle bus.

If you are staying on the Peninsula I'd fly through either SFO or SJC as both are more convenient than OAK. 

If you are staying on the Peninsula I'd get a rental car as relying solely on mass transit can be limiting and/or time consuming depending on exactly where you stay and what you want to do besides see the football game.

Note SFO is more prone to flight delays than SJC or OAK

I'd guess that, traffic factored in, Oakland is actually not much, if any, farther away than SFO. Though exactly how big of a deal it'll be is heavily dependent on the time of day of the game, and if anything else is happening in the area. Hard to say about those.

It's 100% correct, though, that it's way easier to get to Palo Alto on public transit from anywhere else. You can do it via BART/Caltrain, but it takes forever (from what I've heard, I've never done it for precisely that reason).

I think your best option is proabably SFO.  If you need to get to or from the airport to the game, Caltrain/Bart is a pretty good option.  If you have extra nights before or after the game, you can spend time in San Francisco, one of the best cities in the world.  SF also has BART, shuttle, and cabs for getting to SFO.
