That being said, the spring game is a bit of a bad omen for us.  Four years ago when it was held in Kezar stadium, my car was totaled when it got rear ended as I stopped on Kezar drive to let someone exit their parking spot so I could take it.

I won't be there, but I have a request for those who will be. I'm curious about Ryan Burns, and it appears we'll get a long look at him on Saturday. The biggest hurdle any Stanford quarterback must clear is mastery of the playbook, and the Spring Game is no place to judge that, but I'd love to have a few accounts of his physical game. We've heard lots about his tools and size (I was stunned to see how big he looked on the sideline at the Rose Bowl), so much that I might be looking forward to his era even more than Keller Chryst's.

So if you're there, and you're so inclined, I'd love to hear all about Burnsie's performance.

No, I just disagreed with the clause that stated "the spring game is no place to judge that".  It was an anecdotal example, and arguably the exception that proves the rule.  We've had plenty of examples of QB's that looked good in the spring game and then never panned out (I think Nottingham, for example).

I really don't see how fans can judge mastery of the playbook from the spring game, which is what that clause referred to.  We see each QB run only a few plays, and we don't know whether he did the line calls, checkdowns, etc. correctly. So I don't think your disagreement is well founded.

I'm one of the biggest skeptics of the eyeball test out there, and I can tell you, that it was immediately obvious that Luck had both the physical tools and the mental makeup  to know that he was going to be a star.  Even if he didn't know the entire playbook and was only displaying a portion of it, it was clear that he mastered the portions that he did show.  Balls were thrown to where the receiver was going to be.  He was hitting his second and third receivers.  He was checking down when the play wasn't there.  He probably had a more complete handle of the offense than any other player out there.
