The Rick Patino move to Louisville does count and I know plenty of Kentucky fans that think less of Patino for it.    Yes, it's a business, but there are plenty of options for good coaches.    Monty (and Patino) was free to make the moves they made, but it will always take away from the luster of his Stanford tenure for me.  To each his own and I would say the same if I were a Cal alum and he left Cal after a great tenure to go to Stanford.  Has Stanford hired a Cal coach recently in a money sport?  Maybe we would with Esquer, bu that's very different as he's a Stanford man. Would Coach K go to the Tarheels?  No.

I actually have fond memories of Monty during my time on the Farm. My Jr. and Sr. year I bartended at, and later managed, Half-Time Sports Grill across from campus. Monty used to come in with his coaches and have lunch meetings in the back room. He was always such a nice guy, and did so much for the program, that I have a hard time holding too much of a grudge over him going to Cal.

Oof, that was a pretty harsh write up by Mendez. I don't think there's much value in airing your dirty laundry so publicly. Part of my reaction was "I wonder what grudge RM has against MM." I remember reading some quotes about how he expected to come into Stanford and tear it up right away and was surprised when that didn't happen. I always wondered if he felt like he wasn't given as big a role on the team as he deserved.

Taking Mendez's allegations at face value, I must say it makes me think less of Montgomery.  However, I am not inclined to take them in that manner.  This whole story line, which has been bubbling around here for quite a while, requires significantly more information and sourcing than is offered in this piece.  Honestly, the style of his writing oozes with "agenda" and he does little to convince this reader that he has more than very strong feelings.  The shoe parable is just juvenile.

That having been said, there has been a boatload of smoke (mixed metaphor?) around this issue and I am one of those kind of people that figures there is fire.  I just don't know if it's a single match or a Big Game bonfire.  Nor will I wait breathlessly to find out.  Maybe it will all come out at some point and I will adjust my view of MM further, one way or the other.  In the meantime, I think I will pause before reading Mendez next time.

Oliver is coaching the Anteaters and has switched from coaching men to women.  Here's an article on the career and coaching philosophy change.  Nothing on Monty here although in other columns Oliver notes that he and Montgomery discussed the position and his ex boss encouraged him to accept it.
