The current team is build largely on non-elite recruits from 2010 and would be a whole lot better still if a few more non-elite recruits hadn't decided to enter the NFL draft and forego a 5th year. 

Parry, Olugbode, Ward, Trojan, and Rhyne were walk-ons in 2010.  Parry and Rhyne weren't in Scout's database.  Olugbode was ranked the 187th best CB in the country and had an offer from Princeton.  Ward was unranked and had an offer from Colorado St.  Trojan was unranked and had no offers. 

Ed Reynolds got 2-stars and was unranked.  Tarpley was a middling 3-star recruit, ranked the 62nd best outside linebacker in the country.  Fleming, Anderson, and Yankey were all solid 3-star recruits. 

The elite recruits from that class haven't panned out nearly as well.  Nottingham never saw the field and Dudchock barely did.  Wilkerson and Carrington were solid backups, but nothing more, and Seale seems likely to fit in the same category.  I'll reserve judgment on Lloyd since he's got three years left.  Lueders may be the only 4-star recruit from 2010 who will come close to meeting expectations. 

This would surprise me a lot if it weren't for similar observations in the past.  For example, Gardner, Brown, Murphy and Mauro were 4 of the 5 lowest ranked recruits in 2009.

Stanford did well at playing Moneyball in 2009 and 2010.  There are some of those guys in more recent classes (Cajuste, Caspers), but not as many.  The talk about Tyler last year was good and the same is true of Marx and Murphy so far, but it's too early to call with those three.

My son was in 8th grade with Olugbode, both played on the school basketball team.  The team was pretty good, but they were about to play an undefeated out-of-area team that was rumored to be one of the best in Northern California.  And they came as advertised, they were really, really good.  Tall, great defense, athletic, well-coached.  Olugbode's team got behind 26-16 midway through the second quarter.  Then, Olugbode took over.  He had three steals in about two minutes, the team made up the entire deficit and took a four point lead at the half, outscoring the opponent 16-2 in 3:30.  At the half, the other team's coaches tried their level best to pump up their team, but they weren't even listening, they just stared, open-mouthed at Kyle.

I've watched him play basketball and football and run some track over the years.  Kyle was about the size of a cornerback when he graduated high school, but he was really a safety.  Really exceptional instincts, very strong hitter and physical.  Reminds me of the 49ers' first round draft pick, Jimmie Ward, playing in the NFL at 5'10", 191 pounds.  Ward didn't have the size to play for a big school.  But he dominated at Northern Illinois, he dominated against Florida State, he dominated all-star receiver at the combines and he's playing great for the 49ers.

Olugbode will have an excellent year this year, mark my words.  First-rate guy from a first-rate family, hungry, with great instincts and technically sound.  He's been waiting four years for his chance.  If he gets the opportunity, he will absolutely make the most of it.

(He can say similar things about Brandon Marshall and Braden Bishop now that they are in the Pac12.  When Zac Schuller starts tearing it up for the Ducks he can claim that he was in the same HS backfield a few times.) It always seemed like there were ten Olugbodes on the field at the same time.  (I think it was actually two.)

Scout says that Olugbode was 5'11", 178 in his senior year of high school and 6'1", 195 in his freshman year at Stanford.  Is he really 6'1" now?  If he were that size as a senior in high school, I bet he would have received offers from others besides Stanford and Princeton.
