Two Stanford students and one alumnus were awarded Rhodes Scholarships:
Quote:Fagan E. N. Harris, Glen Burnie, graduated from Stanford in 2009 where he majored in political science and American studies. Â He is currently completing an M.A. in human rights in criminal justice at the University of Limerick in Ireland as a Mitchell Scholar. Â Fagan grew from special education classes and a childhood where he knew more people in gangs and prison than in college to a college career of great academic success and leadership, and has remained committed to address the challenges of public education and juvenile justice reform. Â He was vice president of the Stanford student body and president of Stanford Students for Relief, where his efforts focused on Pakistan and Katrina. Â Fagan plans to do a D.Phil. in education at Oxford. Â
Quote:Fatima I. Sabar, Ballwin, is a senior at Stanford majoring in biology. Â Her senior thesis is based on her bioengineering research on designing medicinal products that are more affordable. Â Fatima has conducted research at Stanfords and Washington Universitys schools of medicine. Â She has worked on health projects in Mexico and Rwanda, volunteering at the Pacific Free Health Clinic, coordinated World AIDS Week at Stanford, and is coordinating a health education project for migrant farm workers in Salinas Valley. Â Fatima plans to do the M.Sc. in global health science at Oxford.
Quote:Varun S. Sivarum, Monte Sereno, is a senior at Stanford majoring in engineering physics and international relations. Â A Truman Scholar and junior mentor at Phi Beta Kappa, Varun has won Stanford prizes for excellence in humanities and political science, as well as in engineering. Â He is chair of the undergraduate senate, undergraduate representative to the board of trustees and to the faculty senate, and captain of an Indian dance team. Â He has done engineering research in Germany and in the Stanford synchrotron radiation laboratory. and has two patents pending relating to solar energy design. Â He plans to do a D.Phil. in solar energy materials at Oxford.
