Note, the Andrew Luck catch was not off a wildcat, it was on a reverse (Luck under center, tosses it to the running back [Gaffney?], who gave it to Drew Terrell who threw it to Luck).  The UCLA linebacker was late to recognize that Luck was a possible receiver, but he also had contain if Terrell actually was supposed to run.  The safety also was way out of the play.

Why not replace the qb with an extra blocker somewhere?

Maybe if the QB isn't in the huddle it's a pretty good early clue what formation is coming.

Yes, why run a play that immediately puts the ball in your best playmaker's hands, that has averaged more yards per carry over the last four years than running plays from your standard formation, and that forces opponents to take practice time away from planning for your standard sets to prepare for a set of play that none of their other opponents uses? 

It seems far easier to question why Stanford consistently runs running plays with its quarterback lined up under center, and who then merely gives the ball to someone else.  As others have said, that means you are effectively playing 10 guys against 11 defenders.  From the wildcat--and the flanked out QB does force a defense to move a man out to cover--it's 11 on 11.

If the wildcat stops averaging over 5.5 yards per play, it probably will go.

I see Hulk's stats about the wildcat averaging 5.5 yards per play. I'd like to know where that stat comes from? Has someone been charting the offensive plays on this board? If so, I'd love to see that data. That's a whole level of dedication that I wish I could have.

There are other, more creative ways to get a blocking advantage--and the staff knows this. Does anybody remember the two fullback set in the Rose Bowl? My memory is fuzzy on this one, but I think they were both blocking for Hogan on a designed run off-tackle.

With the TyCat™, I wonder how much those numbers are skewed by the bad snap?  And I guess you can argue that you take the good with the bad and that a bad snap is a risk you take with the wildcat formation.  However, because we are dealing with very few snaps (5 total wildcat snaps), one bad one will skew the average.  If you look at the 4 non-fumbled wildcat runs, I think you see Montgomery has 17 yards, or 4.25 yards per carry.  That's not quite as good as our running backs (who are all averaging above 5 yards per carry), but it hardly makes the case that the wildcat is a horrible play.

I'd love to see the overall stats for the wildcat.  If 5.5 yards per carry is correct, that is better than our average rushing total, and it suggests that bias against the play is due to the belief that it shouldn't work, rather than that it doesn't work.  I've not seen the breakdown by play, so I can't comment.
