On my move-in day freshman year there was candy waiting on the desks. That was pretty nice.
(It wasn't a particularly eventful day for me either.)

The year after I graduated, one of my buddies was an RA in Toyon. He got to meet Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon when they dropped off their daughter. Not sure that any move-in day story would be cooler than meeting Cary Grant.

I remember being met at SFO by an undergrad orientation advisor. A number of us piled onto a bus and, on the way to campus, the advisor gave a spiel about Stanford (don't remember the details) and then asked if there were any questions. Someone asked if Stanford was going to fall into the Pacific Ocean when the Big One struck. The advisor retorted: "No, we're going to fall into the Bay."
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

My son's frosh year roommate was the son of the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine, whose family lived next to the NY residence of the Clintons. That was kinda cool. Not all that long afterward, he met the chair of the Hahvahd econ department whilst he had just emerged from the communal shower clad only in a towel. Also entertaining.

Not a great story, or a celebrity sighting, but a funny way to get off on the wrong foot with my roommie's mom. Freshman year I was in Navy ROTC. I went straight from boot camp to move in day and was wearing my uniform with a near skin head type buzz cut. I walked in my room and found my Mexican-American roommie and his mom (who didn't speak much English) waiting. In our chat, I explained that I was in ROTC (pronounced "rot-see") his mom started speaking to him very quickly in Spanish. When I asked what the problem was, he explained that his mom heard "not-zee". It was ironed out, but I never was very close to my roommate's family.

I think I recall hearing that Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell (both of whom played for the Giants in the 2010 championship) were roommates at the U. of Miami, Mrs. Huff met Pat when he entered the room with nothing on and a cold six pack. Aubrey was very sensitive (at the time) and said to his Mom "You see what I have to put up with?" but his Mom was apparently howling in laughter.

After my parents left me at Granada my first day, my older sister's boyfriend (class of '87) showed up at my room and helped me set up a full bar under my bed, including a large quantity of 151. Many a freshman who had never drank before vomited that night in the halls of Lagunitas.

My apologies for the extra S Garvin. I see S for Stanford every where I go. I even wore a Stanford polo to teach in at the U of A today...my athletes did not like that.

Fortunately the Lagunitas brewery is a fairly short jaunt up 101 in Petaluma. It's a fun place to go to, though I've never been on the tour I hear it's a blast.

I remember my move-in day as pretty quiet (as perhaps befits a time before the wheel was invented). What I reflected on when I flew back to Providence with my son in 1999 was that in 1965 there was never any thought of either or both of my parents coming out to CA with me. They put me on the plane in Madison, I switched planes in Chicago, and someone from the orientation committee picked me (and several other Stanford frosh who were on the same plane) up at SFO. So the first Stanford classmate I met was the guy in the row behind me on the UA flight out of Chicago. Still remember his name, which I think is just a reflection of what an important day that was to my life.

Well, my parents accompanied me from Iowa for that event and I can only say that it would have been better if they had saved the airfare. They were a total distraction from whatever it was that went on during that process.

I honestly can't remember if my parents came with me. I don't think so, but my mom did fly out for parent's night some time later. I might be remembering her in my freshman dorm because of that.
