I know this isn't a new observation, but I love seeing interviews like this. To be honest, as emotionally invested as I am in the wins and losses -- and I'm seriously invested -- it's the players that I'm the most proud of, and hearing them speak puts everything else in perspective. These players represent the University, and by extension, they represent me. (Remember that brief moment in time when Richard Sherman was a pariah? How many of you heard about that at work on Monday, just because your degree comes from the same place as Sherman's?) Last January, when I was depressed by the Rose Bowl loss, it was Conor McFadden's interview that put everything in perspective. Do you remember his quote? "We won before we even stepped on the field." Who says that? What 21-year-old kid has that type of understanding?
These players wear the uniform well. At the open Rose Bowl practice last winter, Tyler Gaffney came over to me and my son to chat, not the other way around. Great kid. When I spoke to Jordan Richards at Media Day, I was so taken by his thoughtful responses to the media that I thanked him for representing me and the rest of the University so well. He seemed genuinely moved.
Harrison Phillips seems like another one who will make us proud over the next four years.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!
