Tonight I'll be heading out to the first round of the CIF playoffs to watch Long Beach Poly vs. Servite. The game itself should be great, but I'm particularly interested in the matchup of Servite wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and Poly cornerback Iman Marshall. Marshall is the top-rated defensive back in the nation, according to Rivals.com. (He has an offer from Stanford, but it doesn't look like that's going to work out.) I've been to several Poly games this year, and as you can imagine, he doesn't get challenged.

Tonight, however, might be different. St. Brown also has a Stanford offer, but (according to Frank Buncom III) we're in his top three, along with ND and UCLA. I really can't to watch how things play out tonight, and I'll be sure to post a full scouting report when I get home.

Well, the match-up I was looking forward to never really materialized. Poly keeps Marshall at left corner back (with some reps at safety), regardless of which receiver is across from him, so Servite kept St. Brown on the opposite side all night. You notice St. Brown immediately -- he's 6'5" -- and he's clearly talented. He made a great reaction play on a tipped ball and turned it into a fifty-yard gain, and scored a touchdown later on by using his brobdingnagian frame to fend off defenders on a slant inside the five-yard line. But the offense isn't focused on him, as he isn't Servite's best player. That would be Travis Waller, a 6'2" four-star option quarterback committed to Oregon. He's not Marcus Mariota, but he's definitely a stud. (He's turned down offers from Alabama and Notre Dame.) I'd say they ran read-option about fifty percent of the time, and he ran it well, scoring three touchdowns on powerful runs.

Even though I didn't see a lot from Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown, I'd still be thrilled if he ended up committing to the Cardinal.

Oh, and the game was one of the best I've seen in a while: Poly 34, Servite 33.
