I think starting to like this Lurker guy -- if only he would get shit-faced drunk a couple of times, be solid.

We take the northern route, and make good time toward the Rose Bowl. At the last second, I take the early exit and we are doing well until the local gendarme says, “You can’t turn here!” I’m thinking, “Hell, then WTF is the sign that says Rose Bowl this way doing here and why don’t you have the effing Street blocked off like all others if you . don’t Want us to go this way??l?l"

Once again, we walk through the tunnel, and see the beauty of the Rose Bowl. l'm totally with BA on this -there is no setting like the Rose Bowl for a sporting event. Gorgeous.

Gave Hollywood a miss.  Very wise.  The place is awful.  I grew up in SoCal and we went to Hollywood often as teenagers.  Got to see some great music played in small clubs, but other than that, it was just people milling about on blocks and blocks of touristy souvenir shops.  Hadn't changed much when I last visited.  Well, I'll cop to one great blind spot re: Hollywood.  I just didn't get the whole star on the sidewalk thing.  Imagine battling traffic and crowds to walk along looking down at the sidewalk just so you could say: "Oh, look!  Here's Jerry Lewis"    Pretty barren form of amusement.

Dropped by Grauman's on the way to the Cardboard shindig with the kids while still basking in a post-Rose Bowl glow. 

They got their picture taken with the John Wayne and John Travolta stars and saw the Transformer robot guy and the Michael Jackson impersonator while I drove around the block a couple of times.  In and out in 20 minutes leaving the kids thrilled and wanteing more.  (Perfect.)  We also drove by a few studios and saw the big billboards of upcoming movies.  Their big disappointment was that the Hollywood sign wasn't visible at night.  (It's not lit due to neighborhood complaints.)

I think my position is somewhere between the extremes.  Sure Hollywood is tacky - If we'd made a whole day of it the kids would have been disappointed.  Everything looks grungier during the day and schlepping down sidewalks looking at names underfoot that people under 20 have never heard of cannot be all that fun.  But as an only in LA experience and night time photo op it scored big.

My best story from the Sunset Strip.  I was at a Playboy Playmate of the Year party at the Mondrian Hotel's Skybar.  As we were going in around 9pm, Hef was leaving with half a dozen Playmates in tow.  No problem, we figured plenty more where that came from.  Well when we got in what we saw was 500 guys ogling the same dozen Playmates.  Half of them surrounded Tom Brady.  The other half mobbed Lance Bass of NSync, who was still in the closet then.
