As the article points out, Winston's actions still constitute theft. I'm not sure why the author of the article would imply that an employee helping with the theft makes Winston any less guilty. It could make it worse, because Winston's statement gives me the impression that this sort of "help" was not isolated in Winston's college career.

But I'll admit that I'm biased because I think that Winston committed a far worse crime than stealing crab legs while he was a student at FSU.

I wouldn't minimize the loss when he drops in the draft.  Each succeeding pick over the first 10 or so picks loses an average of about $1 mms. over the life of the contract, then each drop over picks #11-20 loses about $400k, then selections #21-32 lose about $150k.  Given the shortness of NFL careers, that isn't chicken feed.  And he can just about forget about sponsor income, he's already frittered that away.  Last year's #1, Jadeveon Clowney signed a deal with Puma for $190 million over the life of the deal.  Mr. Winston will receive no such largesse.  No sponsor wants to be affiliated with an athlete who is ripe for mocking:

If there were nothing other than the rape allegation I could call it a he said/she said.  But the crab thing and the jumping on the table thing tell me that this kid has serious character issues and as a result I am not inclined to believe him in ANY situation going forward.

Osborne is single-handedly reponsible for my sight-unseen assumption that Nebraska is the single most detestable place in America. He was later elected to Congress based on little more than his coaching record. Then he returned to the university as AD. And last I heard he was one of the voters on the college football playoffs. Bleecch.

I'm not going to defend Osborne's decision to reinstate Phillips for the Fiesta Bowl game.  I disagreed with it at the time and I disagree with it now.  He and the team certainly didn't need Phillips to win that game (Ahman Green had been phenomenal as a freshman back-up) and the results confirmed that.

His behavior did have consequences.  Those consequences just weren't as severe as you or I think was appropriate or necessary.  And no one can say that the decision helped Phillips.  I just don't think it's fair to write off the entire university and Osborne's post-football accomplishments because of that decision.
