Not so much defending the Domers, but its got to be a fine line that coaches need to walk in describing the quality of a backup player. Want to show support, build confidence (primarily in the player himself and his teammates) by speaking positively, but not go overboard and saddle everyone with unrealistic expectations of glory. Some programs go overboard (i would put ND in this category).
Does anyone think Shaw has toned down the rhetoric on young players in recent years? When Lyons first stepped on the field, Shaw was on record as saying he thought he would be a future Thorpe Award finalist. But I haven't heard as much of that kind of hyperbole recently. It seems that sets up a player for criticism should he fail to reach those exalted heights, even if he is a solid contributor to the team.
Phenomenal. How many times, recently, has Shaw used that word? Often

I think I've heard Shaw use "phenomenal" so many times I no longer give it much thought (except to chuckle a bit). I just figure it's his word for describing someone who looked good or played a good game. But specifically pumping someone up as a potential winner of a national award like the Thorpe, or Butkus or Voldemort is different. I recall Hogan describing McCaffrey as someone who might end up a future invitee to the Voldemort award ceremony last year. Maybe the Lyons as Thorpe candidate statement was just a gush of enthusiasm.
