Call it a German B+ team or so; the starting lineup had Goetze, Oezil, etc. (But also some relative nobodies.) And of course Morris came on in the second half, when there were more subs and more disinterest. Still, if you're a threat against merely very good Bundesliga pros, you've got some ability.

It's a friendly, for sure, but I definitely think it shows the US "belongs," which is what they talked about before the match. They've come a long way since USA '94.

If it was the German B+ team, then it was the US B+ (or, at best, A-) team as well. Neither side was at full strength. The best part for me was how the USMNT played, at least in the 2nd half. They were actually taking it to the Germans, rather than sitting back and playing defensively. It was a good win.Â

Questions for you WIM... I know Klinsmann brought and some other young guys up to try to get them experience in the international setting in order to set USA soccer up for the future. I assume Germany and pretty much everyone else also does this, right? Is that what you mean by the B+ team?
Also, what do you think Morris' prospects would be right now if these were more than just friendlies (either World Cup qualifying matches or World Cup Finals)? I'm under the impression that USA soccer has a fair number of more experienced forwards that would probably be played ahead of Morris, but he certainly has shown himself capable against top notch competition. What are your thoughts?

I dunno what Germany's motives were, only that if it were a World Cup final tomorrow, they wouldn't consider this anywhere close to their best lineup. Maybe B team would be more accurate.

I wouldn't put Morris in the same category as Luck as an athlete. As a Stanford player he hasn't been as dominant. And his relative place on the youth pecking order is different. Luck is the best QB prospect in the NFL and was one of the best in years. Morris may not be the best young American soccer prospect, let alone one of the best in generations. (He doesn't have as good a record as Landon Donovan at the same age, to take one example.)
