Harbaugh interview
07-02-2015, 08:03 PM
I had heard an awful lot about this interview, but didn't listen until just now. Wow, that's more than a clunker. Colin Cowherd is always difficult to listen to, but Harbaugh seemed like he was out to sabotage the interview. That was supremely awful, and I kind of applaud Cowherd for calling Harbaugh out.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

Wow, that sounded like something was wrong with Harbaugh, almost as if he was deeply distracted the whole time.Â

Not one for the time capsule, that's for sure. Harbaugh was just giving name, rank, and serial number.
These kind of things just add to his mystique, I guess.
Harbaugh is almost like royalty in the football world these days. Almost anything he does is a news event.

Finally got around to seeing this, after hearing about it earlier. Thank you for highlighting it. He certainly seemed totally distracted the entire time, and didn't want to be there doing what he was doing. I'm sure he can turn on the charm when he wants, but that was not one of those times.

Yeah, the mystique.Â
He only needs to sell the recruits on Michigan.Â
I would find his comparison to Stanford to be really fascinating, but might not end up liking what I hear since he needs to see a new program.

I actually don't think he can do that with the media, that is, turn on the charm. After listening to him speak to even ridiculously friendly media and it is clear that this is far from his level of comfort. My armchair analyzing is that he'll charm people who he really needs, like employers, recruits and recruit parents, he's nice to boosters and fans, and considers the media to be either beneath him or not part of the job or both. I suspect he's had some bad experiences in the past, possibly surrounding the transition from McMahon to Harbaugh at Chicago. Harbaugh backs up McMahon for three years, then Harbaugh takes over and his first two years he goes 10-4 and 11-5 as a starter. First year, he doesn't play in the wild card victory over New Orleans (Muster goes 12 rushes for 71 yards, btw), so Tomczak leads them to that victory (despite the fact that he was 1-1 as a starter during the regular season). They then get shredded by the NY Giants in the next playoff game, 31-3. Harbaugh, still benched, Tomczak goes 17 for 36, 205 yards, 2 INTs, no TDs. Harbaugh gets a pass, of sorts. His rating for the season was 81.9, Tomczak's was 43.8.
Next season they finish 11-5, Harbaugh plays all 16, but this is the defense's team. The offense ranks 14 of 28, the definition of mediocrity. Again, they start 9-2, lose three of their last five. They lose 13-17 to the Cowboys in a close wildcard game. Harbaugh goes 22 for 44, 1 meaningless TD, 2 crushing interceptions. Moves the team ok, but they get a 19 yard field goal. Runs 7 times for 26 yards, not bad. Still, a first round loss. Everyone thinks Ditka is still amazing.
The next two years, however, they go 5-11 and 7-9. offense ranked 24th of 28 in Harbaugh's last season. They were 7-5, then lost four straight. By now, Harbaugh was 30, 7 TDs, 11 INTs. Wannstedt new coach, Geep Chryst was the QA coach for most of that time, BTW. I'm guessing the media turned on McMahon at that point in Chicago.
He moves on to Indiana in 1994, and in 1995 he has the league's highest passer rating at 100.7. They're only 9-7 (Harbaugh goes 7-5), but they win the wild card 35-20, then beat Kansas City in the Division game. In the championship game, they lose to Pittsburgh Steelers 16-20. Harbaugh has a great game against San Diego in the WC, and a poor game in a 10-7 win over 13-3 KC in -15 degree wind chall playoff game. Harbaugh and Bono have nearly identical stats in that game. In the championship game, Harbaugh goes 21 for 33 for 267 yards, 1 TD, no INTs, and 6 for 29 on the ground and outplays Neil O"Donnell of the Steelers.
The next year, they lose in the wild card, 42-14 to the Steelers. Harbaugh doesn't play well. Harbaugh doesn't return to the playoffs, plays for three more teams in four years, retires at 37. He was the 1995 Comeback Player of the Year, which means the media probably crushed him the year prior.
He gave the pro game all he had. He finished at 95th in TDs, but 20th in sacks. His first coach, Ditka, had no problem throwing him under the bus. I'm guessing bad experiences with the media, so no interest or facility or even level of comfort with people he sees as being out to get him.
