Ty Montgomery

Thanks for this post. I have no doubt that Montgomery's going to have a long, productive career in the NFL.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

Rodgers can chuck the ball. Here's hoping for quick chemistry between the two.
more on Montgomery
The problem, scouts thought before the draft, was the former Stanford receiver also caught footballs like a running back. Which is to say Montgomery doesnt catch well at all.
Ive definitely heard it before, Montgomery said. I dont feel like I need to prove that. Yeah, I had two or three bad games in college where I dropped a few balls, but somebody pointed out to me that my catch rate in college was like 90 percent or something like that.
Ive always known I have really good hands, and I can catch the ball well. So I never felt like I needed to prove anything to anybody.

I wonder how much those college rivalries hold over into the NFL. Does AR hold it against Ty that he holds the Big Game record for touchdowns? I'm sure once a rapport has been established, there's not effect, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cal QBs are reluctant to throw the ball to Stanford receivers at the start of their careers.

If Montgomery started his career at Cal and transferred to Stanford a la Brennan Scarlett, to set said record, there MIGHT be some angst. But rest assured that fans make much more of the rivalries than the players. Whoever is on your team is your ally, and whoever is on the other team is your enemy, but everyone tends to respect each other as athletes and professionals after the final whistle, gun, horn, point, or out is recorded.

Money talks. If Montgomery earns a top receiver slot and gets open (or at least has his number called by the coaching staff), Rodgers will have to make the right call. (I guess that means TyMont needs to impress the coaching staff more than he does the QB...)

I find it hard to believe Rodgers would ignore Ty because of his alma mater. These are professionals, very competitive professionals. Can you imagine Andrew sitting back there in the middle of a play thinking, "where is my Stanford buddy?" Me neither.

Selfishly, I hope Ty gets traded. Anybody but the Packers... :)
But seriously, I hope he proves the doubters wrong no matter where he plays. I just can't cheer for him if he's wearing green & gold. Can't do it - sorry.

Actually, considering Rodgers's recent switch in allegiance, he might be more bothered by Montgomery's Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin.

Here's a link from ESPN this morning, singing more praises. Also, Aaron Rodgers addresses the rivalry issue.

As a life long Packers fan, I've had to come to terms with having Aaron Rodgers as my team's QB and star player. I look at it this way. Rodgers spent 2 semesters at Butte Community College and 3 semesters at C.al. He reportedly was enrolled in courses at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay a few years ago. I don't now whether he ever got a degree, and if so, I don't know whether his degree came from C.al or UWGB. He introduces himself on TV as an alum of Butte College. He shows up at University of Wisconsin basketball games. He does identify with C.al from time to time, but still, I figure his connection with C.al has been sufficiently diluted for me to fully embrace him as the Packers' QB. . . .

By all accounts, AR went to the school that offered him a scholar. He doesn't have a particular allegiance to UCB and may in fact harbor some grudge over the way they handled Tedford's dismissal.
Given the favortism Luck seems to show Fleener in the passing game, I don't think it's a stretch to think an alum of one school would treat a rival player differently. I'm sure that fades as production demonstrates the inherent value of the player, but I wouldn't be surprised if a Stanford player got fewer lucks from a UCB QB at the start of training camp. Of course, the Fleener-Luck connection is strengthened by them actually having played together.
I'm excited to have more Stanford players to follow in the NFL. It makes each game that much more interesting. And I'm happy that Ty is on a team with an elite QB. That can only help his career. If he was with the Texans or Browns, I would be disappointed for his sake. AR will increase Ty's earning potential and make for more highlights for us fans to enjoy.

I'd be stunned if Rodgers were to avoid throwing to Montgomery due to the college rivalry.
These guys are professionals earning paychecks for performance. They will take the best path to success.

"I'd be stunned if Rodgers were to avoid throwing to Montgomery due to the college rivalry."
It's just not a very credible assertion, regardless of one's "loyalty" to his alma mater. No way that consideration comes into play.

Someone may be singing the alma mater or fight song of a teammate's school after a rivalry bet; but their paychecks depend on combined performance, so a QB would be an idiot not to work with a receiver from a rival college. Or any combination you can think of. My guess is that personal stuff (stolen girlfriends, the guy who never picks up a tab, the guy who is a straight out jackass in the locker room, etc) would interfere with a working relationship long before college history. (Unless maybe that history involved some serious 'off-field' stuff.) Furthermore, it wouldn't surprise me if most high level college players have far more in common with their opponents (and therefore probably respect them more) than they do with the "regular" students or fans from their own school.
Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working .I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. Peter Gibbons

I'm pretty sure that when Rodgers says his name on MNF broadcasts, he says his HS or Butte CC. iirc several other 59ers do the same thing.
