Five year deal for the former Niner DC.

In football and hoops.

Wow.
Nothing falling, nothing else going well.

Preview:
We are riding high, with a #1 ranking and the news that we just landed the top 2022 recruit. But Utah took us down just a couple of years ago when we were also on a winning streak. We cannot afford to look past this game. Fortunately, practicing at altitude for a week should help our team compared with other trips to the mountains.
Utah is 3-7, having beaten Washington, Oregon State, and Montana State, but having lost to just about everyone else. Several of the losses were quite competitive--it lost to USC by a single point. It has 12 players who have played this season but just 3 consistent starters. Those three include their point leader Brynna Maxwell, a 6' sophomore guard, and 5'11" junior guard Dru Gylten. Gylten is hitting 39% of her treys and seems to be their point guard, with not quite a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio. Andrea Torres, a 6'2 junior forward from Quevec, has also started all 10 games but is their fifth leading scorer. Utah does have some height that sometimes starts or sometimes comes from the bench in 6'4" sophomore Lola Pendande from Spain, and 6'4" freshman Peyton McFarland from Idaho.
Fully 1/3 of the shots Utah takes are from three point range, and they are making 32% of them as a team, so perimeter defense without allowing Maxwell to scoot to the rim will be the order of the day. I imagine this is a prime assignment for Anna Wilson.

Good piece by fivethirtyeight on the top freshmen in women's basketball this year.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/wom...-freshmen/
Cameron Brink makes an appearance, which is remarkable given she's not even a starter.
Quote:Paopao faced off against another exciting freshman last week when Oregon fell to top-ranked Stanford. The 6-foot-4 Cameron Brink is shooting better than 62 percent from the field, and her 16.3 block percentage ranks third in the country, regardless of class.
It's also a good article because it throws a little shade in the direction of Paige Bueckers and Geno Auriemma. Buekers is having a great season, but the article notes...
Quote:Even so, the biggest challenge to Bueckers as the best freshman this season doesn’t come from Brink or from Paopao...
No, it is Caitlin Clark of Iowa, who is staking her claim as not only freshman of the year, but player of the year as well.

Name the 13 SF Giants in the Baseball Hall of Fame

Sorry if this was already posted but I didn’t see this info before.
In the STM newsletter, they announced 5th year seniors wide receiver Cameron Buzzell, tight end Tucker Fisk, fullback Houston Heimuli, defensive end Ryan Johnson, outside linebacker Thunder Keck, inside/outside linebacker Gabe Reid, defensive tackle Dalyn Wade-Perry and free safety Noah Williams are returning, we already knew about 4th year senior Booker, and also 6th year seniors outside linebacker Jordan Fox, running back Dorian Maddox and quarterback Isaiah Sanders.
I count 10 seniors who have started plus several others like Sanders who have playing time (and scored a touchdown!) Considering that many first string players were sophomores this year(many o linemen, running backs and defensive backs), that is a lot of starters with unfinished business.
Despite all the doom and gloom, I’d rate this group of returners great news. I was particularly concerned about d linemen and linebackers, and it feels like almost all are fired up and coming back for the 2021 campaign!

Here are a few interesting tidbits gleaned from the Jan. 12 behind the bench with Tara and Katy.
1. We'll start with the best: The three players, Hannah, Alyssa and Lexie, who missed the last game will play at Utah.
2. Along with other staff members who missed games, Kate will be back, too, giving us our full contingent of coaches.
3. No male practice players.
4. Each person has her own room, and there are only two people per elevator.
5. They all wear a sensor that tells how long they've been around someone.
6. Ashten and Cameron are getting close to dunking.
7. Anna was singled out for her defense.
Overall, Tara is pleased with the team's progress and with its chemistry. "We're getting a lot of contributions from a lot of people," she said.
Noting that the men's and women's basketball teams are the only ones in the country with no home court, she was her
most emphatic when said how much everyone misses Maples and the fans.

USA Today gives us a B. Colorado the only team graded higher (B+). Oregon and USC also got B's.
