with either 5 or 6 (don't have the exact statistics in front of me, but yes, you are correct, only one of those featured 6 titles).

What enables sport to transcend the specifics of the game and the moment is that it can be inspiring. This win is inspiring.

Our first chance to set a new record will be this weekend at the NCAA Women's Rowing championships. I think Stanford is seeded 2nd, after UW. The points race at the Pac-12 championships was very close.

I played high school golf (Oklahoma state 3A champs 40 years ago!) and loved the team aspect. It meant a lot to me to play for my school and coach and teammates. I follow both the men's and women's NCAA tournaments because the play is compelling and can be incredibly dramatic. It's amazing to see how well these players execute under the most extreme pressure.
What Stanford did this year is really special. A great example of a team achievement. They did not hesitate to be great. They worked hard to have the opportunity to win it all, then made it happen (with some great play and a little luck). It *is* inspiring.

I am not sure there is more competition now than at that time. There is more money in NCAA athletics now. Better or deeper competition is somewhat subjective. However, no doubt that in 2018-2019 there are many more chances to get NCAA team titles.
Women's Ice Hockey, Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Bowling and Women's Water Polo did not offer NCAA team titles in 1996-1997, and Women's Rowing had its first NCAA title opportunity back in 1997.
So that creates at least five new opportunities to claim titles, admittedly Ice Hockey is an unlikely title opportunity for Stanford. Still, there are quite a number of new sports and one of this year's six (Women's Water Polo) is part of that mix.

One side note - assistant coach Matt Bortis is getting a lot of credit for the turnaround. He helped to prepare the team mentally and physically and I think the improvement over the season reflects his influence.
Bortis played college golf at Arkansas for 3 years (home course - Blessings), then transferred to Texas where he earned his degree. This championship must have meant a lot to him too.

Especially after the near-epic collapse in the last two rounds of stroke play, couldn't be happier that Salinda and Wu were nails, and that Snyder, Tuleubayev, and Shimp in succession provided the clinching point.
The only sour note for me, or half-sour at least, was the tone of the coverage. Does the Longhorn Network own the Golf Channel? During the semis yesterday, and especially today, it seemed like Texas was the focus of the coverage. So much so that some of the commentary at the end of the match was "Texas defeated by Stanford" and "well, the Longhorns missed their shots," not "Stanford runs the table from the #7 seed." Just seemed off-key, but was very much redeemed by Notah Begay's commentary when they went to him.

Apologies to the green jacketed stuff shirts in Augusta but my favorite PGA event is the WGC Match Play which is played on a fantastic course in Austin.
The PGA Championship was played as match play when I was a kid. The Ryder cup is great but the possibility of Brooks Koepka vs Dustin for a major is thrilling.
