I am trying hard to remind myself that no Stanford coach should be fired after the COVID-19 challenges this year.

HOWEVER - This end of season story is all too familiar with or without COVID.

Team wasn't really going to get into the tournament in 2019-2020, and may need to be the AQ to get into the tournament here in 2020-2021.   The next year should be better if (insert promising variable here) is getting old.

Haase was an important hire to get Stanford from the cellar to mid-Pac, but not sure he is the one capable of taking Stanford from mid-Pac to the top 2 or 3 of the Pac.

One thought on Haase today: we're getting killed on plays where we double team a big on the baseline.  OSU was really well prepared for this, and they're getting open shots.  No team is surprised by the double team anymore, and Haase needs to drop it.  Heck, we have a bunch of guys who are great at man to man defense.  Let them do their thing.

Awful second half. Early in the second half, Stanford had around 4 turnovers in a row. To me, this was the stretch where the game was lost. Add to it some dumb plays (fouling the best FT shooter on a desperation 3-point heave), and it leads to a deserved double-digit loss.

Stanford wasn't in the cellar when Dawkins was fired. They were 15-15 overall and 8-10 in conference in his last year. In fact, their conference record was within one game of .500 in each his last five seasons.

Haase hasn't taken this program anywhere. His record isn't materially better by any measure. That's why he shouldn't have a job any more, but the AD's never gonna pull the rip cord this year.

Next year is tourney or bust. I don't care how young or inexperienced the roster is. I don't care how bad the injuries are next year. No excuses - bid or bye-bye.

I didn't say that double teaming cost us the game.  It's just a bad strategy and I'm sick of watching us scramble to cover wide open guys.  There's a good argument to be made that double teaming did cost us some of the closer games.  Not today obviously.

I don't know enough about the inner workings and competencies of Stanford's MBB coaches, but I hold two beliefs based on what I can gather:

1. Mark Fox would win more games with Stanford's roster.

2. Haase needs to improve the quality of his assistant coaches.

Everyone has seen really bad coaching decisions, but in the brief glimpse I saw of the ending of the Oregon game, I saw something really alarming. There was a timeout called in the final minute. Stanford's assistants were all together near midcourt - to me looking like nobody knew what they were doing - while the players were all sitting, waiting for someone to lead and direct them. After 30 seconds, the coaches all walked over to the players, with Haase taking out the erase board.  

I've never seen something that visually made me think a coaching staff was unprepared before, in any sport, but there it was, for everyone watching to see on Stanford's home floor, with Stanford basketball coaches. Hardly surprising the players failed to execute any winning plays down the stretch. And I still think the WSU disaster was a firable offense.
