I don't think there's really any advantage to giving up our annual series with the LA schools. If we only have one fixed game, we'd still have 10 conference opponents to rotate through. Neither an 8-game schedule nor a 9-game one does that neatly.
You can actually go all the way up to 5 fixed games (three of which would presumably be the other CA schools) and then rotate the other 6, playing three in any given year. And that's still with just an 8-game conference slate. And it would result in a 4-year rotation playing everyone both home and away.
Though I still prefer the 9-game slate with just the 3 fixed games.
