All joking about Scott Frost in my prior thread aside, I strongly believe we will end up with Dave Clawson at a podium on the Farm in the next month. Here's my thinking, with a heavy tip of the hat to the excellent Steven Godfrey of Split Zone Duo (which you really should be listening to if you're on this board - it is absolutely worth the $5-10 a month):

- Has experience, and success, at a small P5 school with rigorous (if not quite Stanford-level) academics and admissions criteria, and by all accounts enjoys being in that kind of environment
- Has been at Wake for coming up on 10 years, and feels as if he's hit the ceiling of what the Deacs are capable of and may be ready for a new challenge
- Has experience building a program alongside a nascent NIL operation the athletic department has built out, as well as a fan collective (both things we lack to date)
- According to Godfrey, admires Stanford and the community around it and has turned down other jobs in the past at schools that don't have our kind of environment
- His contract and buyout info aren't in the public domain since Wake is private, but based on what info is public it doesn't seem the cost of pulling him out of Winston-Salem would be prohibitive relative to the market

And the reasons I think other plausible candidates don't end up with the job:
- Peterson: Doesn't leave a cushy job at Fox for what will be a tough rebuild in a new CFB world
- Bloomgren: Has strong program ties, but has never had a winning record at Rice - admittedly a tough, tough place to win, but that fact makes him a difficult sell internally at a time when fan enthusiasm is at a low
- Mendenhall: A demonstrated winner at academically demanding schools, but feels like Shaw redux in a lot of ways, especially since he left UVa because he was resistant to changing up his staff as demanded by the AD (imagine having an AD who demands accountability, fellow Stanford fans!)
- Roman: He's not bringing Lamar with him from Baltimore, and it feels like he's being tossed in solely based on program ties from over a decade ago and not anything else
- Mason: The Vandy tenure was bad even by Vandy standards. Then again, Stanford is one of the few places a black head coach can get a second chance if history is any guide (check out Denny Green's record at Northwestern before he came to Stanford) - a plausible backup candidate should a primary one fall through, but not a first choice

Notes on Mendenhall from my brother (UVA grad).

Great coach. Super idiosyncratic. Not very dynamic or personable. His style doesn't play well in the NIL era. A good fit at a tier 2 school like BYU (Mendenhall is Mormon).

Chryst: I think there's a through line to some degree between Chryst, Shaw, Mendenhall, Cutcliffe, and others - lots of success but when things faltered very low appetite to change ways. Oftentimes this manifests in a loyalty/refusal to let go of under-performing assistants. I think Chryst would be an extremely plausible candidate for Stanford, just flagging that if fans want to move on from a coach being overly loyal/set in his ways/etc. Chryst has some baggage.

As you yourself frequently quote Heraclitus, "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man", and while it is possible to become complacent and set the "second time around", it is also possible to learn from prior mistakes.  I have no idea of Chryst is capable of such; it would be something that should be asked if he is a serious candidate and is invited to interview.

Wisconsin fan here. I have been a big fan of this program ever since my daughter started there in 2012. Chryst inherited a difficult situation after Gary "the flake" Anderson left abruptly. Chryst really did well with a ground oriented attack that has been Wisconsin staple since Barry Alvarez took over way back when. His initial years were off the charts good but he definetely struggled on a relative basis the last three years. Part of this was a poor running game (sound familiar?) and picking the wrong young QB who did not perform up to his recruiting hype. The biggest red flag for Wisconsin besides the on-filed decline was the lack of high caliber recruiting. Chryst left key recruiting positions vacant for the better part of a year.

If not for the recruiting snafus Chryst might be a decent candidate for Stanford. He is an offensive minded coach that had success at both Pitt and Wisconsin. Because of the recruiting issues, I don't want Stanford to pursue him even though he runs the type of offense that could be successful at Stanford. He also benfited from a superlative defensive coordinator (Jim Leonhard) so he only had to focus on one side of the ball.

I like the alum as coach model because otherwise we stay a stepping stone program.  Of the alums out there, Troy Walters stands out.  He had success at UCF as OC (finalist for OC of the year), but flamed out at Nebraska.  He's currently the WR coach of the Bengals.  It's hard to tell how good a coach he is because the talent level at Nebraska is not competitive in the B1G, and the talent level at WR at the Bengals is probably the best in the league (Chase, Higgins and Boyd).  Our Trenton Irwin has done well under his fellow alums tutelage.  Speaking of Shaggy...

(1).  Stanford needs to turn over a new leaf & THINK BIG !  (enough with the 'little engine that could paradigm');  If you want to be a Program that wins 10 regular-season power5 games a season, you have to act like that in all regards, & THINK BIG !

(2).  This is the attitude Coach JimHarbaugh brought which is why he reformed all the Program's player recruiting approaches, expectations of itself, & its perception by outsiders.

(3).  I agree entirely with 'WashingtonIsMoney' on why Dave Clawson should not be the first choice for our next HC with regard to Coach Clawson's record at Wake Forest over his tenure there.

(4).  Dave Clawson's ACC record over his long tenure was approx 29-42 (which shows inability to pivot & find creative solutions to WakeForests challenges)

(5). While Clawson is not a bad coach, Stanford (StanU) should have 'way higher aspirations' for its Football Program than a coach who went 29-42 in the ACC

(6). 1 of the key criteria for the next Coach, in my opinion, is that this Coach needs to 'BigName enough & Charismatic enough' to win Recruiting Battles vs NotreDame & UCLA & USC for 4/5 star blue-chip recruits & a person charismatic enough to convince 4 & 5 star athletes to come to the Pac12 (after USC and UCLA leave for the Big10) ...and that is not Coach Clawson.

(1).  Stanford needs to turn over a new leaf & THINK BIG !  (enough with the 'little engine that could paradigm');  If you want to be a Program that wins 10 regular-season power5 games a season, you have to act like that in all regards, & THINK BIG !

(2).  This is the attitude Coach JimHarbaugh brought which is why he reformed all the Program's player recruiting approaches, expectations of itself, & its perception by outsiders.

(3).  I agree entirely with 'WashingtonIsMoney' on why Dave Clawson should not be the first choice for our next HC with regard to Coach Clawson's record at Wake Forest over his tenure there.

(4).  Dave Clawson's ACC record over his long tenure was approx 29-42 (which shows inability to pivot & find creative solutions to WakeForests challenges)

(5). While Clawson is not a bad coach, Stanford (StanU) should have 'way higher aspirations' for its Football Program than a coach who went 29-42 in the ACC

(6). 1 of the key criteria for the next Coach, in my opinion, is that this Coach needs to 'BigName enough & Charismatic enough' to win Recruiting Battles vs NotreDame & UCLA & USC for 4/5 star blue-chip recruits & a person charismatic enough to convince 4 & 5 star athletes to come to the Pac12 (after USC and UCLA leave for the Big10) ...and that is not Coach Clawson.
