Agreed. Just bad play. We really can't crash the O boards and get a put back or push in transition and score an easy basket AT ALL in nearly 7 minutes. Nope. Apparently not. We just seem to settle for what they want us to do, which is miss from the periemter. It was an UGLY 2nd quarter.

OK, here are my impressions.
1) The team's defense certainly improved over Gonzaga. This is a somewhat comparable team we were playing tonight--Portland beat Gonzaga last year in their conference championship)--but not under comparable circumstances. Even so, we held their best player--Maise Burnham--to 3 points, and their 6'6" center to 4. We held them 18 under their season scoring average, and 7% under their normal shooting percentage. The defense passed the eyeball test a bit better too. Tempie discussed our team playing closer to opposing players with both hands raised rather than dangling out at the sides. In the first quarter I saw Lepolo, Bosgana and others implementing that and the defensive intensity paid off. As the quarters went on, however, the old habits reappeared and we lost of lot of the first quarter intensity. Sustaining that for a whole game will be a project for the year, I think.
2) The second quarter was dreadful on offense, especially compared with all the others, but we only gave up 16 points, so the defense did not collapse. It is very obvious that our offense becomes quite disjointed when neither Brink nor Iriafen are in. We have gone from a team with too many posts to a team with too few. Whether we are competitive against really good teams is now completely dependent on Brink and Iriafen staying out of foul trouble and staying healthy.

She needs to do a lot more of that. But everyone not named Jump was 1-13. Bosgana had the 1, on 1/6 shooting. That is at home in friendly territory with familiar sight lines. We have to do better, if only to space the floor for Brink and Iriafen.

All that while (fortunately) keeping her fouls to 2--she did not pick up another foul in the entire second half. We need this to continue.
9) Lepolo had 6 points--her offense went dormant, as was pointed out, right after I praised it in the first quarter. But she played great defense and helped hold Portland's spectacular shooting guard to 3 points, and she also had 7 assists to 2 turnovers. Not bad, and at least she took some shots, although she passed up others when she was wide open. Tempie told the chalk talk that they would like to see Lepolo shoot more and have encouraged her. "It will come in time" I think Tempie said. In any case, it is not as if the coaches are content or ignoring the issue.

I’m going to defend Lepolo here a bit because although she struggled shooting, she didn’t let that impact the rest of her game. She had some beautiful leading passes to Brink and Iriafen in the second half. Those two get the credit but it is Lepolo that is making the pass that puts them in a great position to score.

Yeah—my apologies for being contrary. I probably should have realized that when you said it was not mentioned “at the game,” you likely meant that literally, in-person at the game.

And her defense was improved--she was playing close and keeping a hand in the opposing faces. And she shot the ball some--you can't start making them until you starting shooting the ball. So that bodes well. However, teams will sag off of her until she starts making those shots. In that respect, effort alone is not rewarded. There were times last night where Portland simply left her wide open on the perimeter, daring her to shoot, and she passed it. Just watched some game highlights and saw more clearly things I didn't adequately appreciate last night -- two in particular: 1) early in game, Cam made a gorgeous pinpoint pass to Elena who was curling in to the basket, field goal made. A thing of real beauty; 2) again Cam, Kiki was going to the basket up close, made it, but Cam was moving in behind her from the side, ready to be there for the rebound if needed. There's a reason she gets so many rebounds. She gets into position.

On shooting...Lepolo and Bosgana go 1-8 from 3. They are 29% and 20% on the season so far. The team has to find a way to make other teams pay when the other team is sagging. I don't trust Bosgana's shot. Sometimes her misses are way off - not the sign of a consistent shooter who's "just in a slump". She's just not a great shooter. One thought is to have both of them penetrate more. Get the ball in the paint and either dish low to Cam/Kiki, kick out to Jump/Demetre, hit a midrange, get all the way to the hole, DHO to the other wing.... I do think there's a lot Tara can do here other than just have Lepolo stand there looking around when the defense is not guarding her. Maybe have Kiki/Cam come up and set a low screen on Lepolo's defender? Gotta do something...

Watching the game on DVR today, the defensive change I see from Portland in the second quarter is to move the zone closer in towards the basket. That gave a lot less space to work inside the zone, while leaving our 3 point shooters much more open. But they were missing or not shooting.
Demetre did still get the ball inside the zone a couple of times, but was pressured more and missed a couple of shots.
