Stanford wins 79-58. A big 24 point 4th Q really pumped up our stats. After dismal shooting for 2.5 quarters, we ended up 41.9%, 50%, 72.7%. We ended up with 15 assists after only having 3 at the half.

There were some stanzas in this game that looked a lot like last season and I thought "This isn't a tournament team." But, at other times we looked great.

Agara was one rebound from a double-double. Her frosh teammates, Somfai and Eschmeyer got theirs.
Ogden did not play like a starter. In 11 minutes she scored 0 on 0-1 shooting and went 0-2 from the charity stripe. She had zero rebounds, zero assists, 1 personal foul, 1 turnover, and 1 block.
Eschmeyer looking like Cam out there with 4 brinks. But, unlike Cam, she finished her 11 point 12 rebound 4 block 32 minute game with ZERO FOULS! Dare I say she could be better than Cameron Brink?

Agree about Eschmeyer. On defense she's very adapt in keeping her body parallel to the opposing player who is driving to the hoop and she has a great knack in timing her blocks. Did you notice Eschmeyer's cool hook shot in traffic? She has shown multiple offensive tools and once her teammates start looking for Alex when she's posting up in the low block, she will be a monster and better yet, her presence will ease the pressure our perimeter players are facing every game. At this point, Eschmeyer is more polished and further along, especially offensively, than Brink was early in her freshman year. Alex must be a starter.

This was a good test for our young team. Santa Clara played aggressive physical basketball. At certain points in the game their style of play disrupted our team and caused confusion and turnovers. We need to learn how to play against teams like this if we are going to be competitive in the ACC and, hopefully, the NCAA tourney.

Eschmeyer is outstanding. However she has a lot to learn about posting up. It’s not that the guards can’t pass it’s the posting. That said she will and then Will be a monster

Great to see the kudos to Talana and Alex, but worth noting that Somfei was also outstanding last night, though she did have a couple of, whoops, what happened to the ball, oh I lost it, moments. We have a great core of people and when they merge into a smooth team, I have high hopes.
But something no one has noted as yet, I think. Kate played a short rotation last night. Only 9 people got into the game and of those, two played very little -- Shay was officially in the game for 7 SECONDS (at the end of the 1st half) and MAS played just under 7 minutes. As for Ogden, 10:44. So in effect, 6 players (including 3 frosh) had nearly all the time.

Yeah I was thinking more subs coulda/shoulda played more. But it's a double edged sword.
More sub time might help build more depth.

Coach Paye addressed the short rotation in her post-game press conference (at 7:34); she likened every game to a puzzle that has to be figured out, and when a lineup was working they needed to stick with it. She then emphasized the importance of the rest of the roster to the team's success over the season.

My heart was sinking when Santa Clara erased our lead and took the 1 point lead of their own. At that point in the game our offense looks stagnant and discombobulated. Then we hit a few threes, and all was right with the world.
This has been Stanford's story for years now. We MUST make threes not so much because we need those points--although often we do--but because the rest of our offense depends so heavily on spacing, and the spacing becomes terrible if we do not have an outside threat. Santa Clara packed the paint and made it very difficult inside, until our most experienced players (Lepolo, Agara, and Clardy) began to made some shots away from the basket. Then, of course, the inside opened up as well, and the entire complexion of the game changed, for the better.
Defense is quite good. We did have a few missed assignments, but their best player was held scoreless for most of the game, and their three point shooting descended from the heavens.
Tempie at the chalk talk absolutely agreed that playing time is necessary to retain players. She also suggested a change in attitude toward freshmen. They will be played more, but more will be expected of them. The era of gradual transitions seems to be over. They are paid professionals now, so no more kid gloves for the newbies.

I'm a little surprised by the low minutes for MAS. This was the type of game (physical) in which she excels. However, it was good for Alex to get that 32 minutes of court time. She has a MUCH higher ceiling than MAS.

I think the Big BIG 3 (AGARA-ESCHMEYER-SOMFAI) and the Big SMALL 3 (CLARDY-LEPOLO-SWAIN) will eventually INDIVIDUALLY average at least 30mins/game which leaves 200 - 30 x 6 = 20 mins/game to be divided among OGDEN, STEVENSON, and IJIWOYE

I can't disagree. But of course the implications of that are that Amborn, Peterson, Papadaki, Ezike, Green, and Umeh all get Zero.
There's some of those that might be good with that, and others that might not and consider a transfer out later.
A difficult balancing act to be sure.

Respectfully disagree. Eschmeyer (already) is posting in the block more forcefully than Brink (Alex has a stronger frame). She's posting and holding her post longer than Brink ever did and on top of that, she'll often run to the other block (on the other side of the basket) and post there. If you're watching the game on TV or via stream, what you're probably not seeing is that Stanford's guards are not even looking inside. Their eyes are looking out on the perimeter to pass to an available player. I am seeing all of this up close. It's the guards' fault.
