Senior Day -
Spiny_Norman - 11-23-2015
Let's take a minute to recognize the seniors (and graduate student(s)) who will play their final game at Stanford Stadium on Saturday. By my count, that list will include:
Kevin Hogan
Remound Wright
Devon Cajuste
Rollins Stallworth
Kyle Murphy
Brendan Austin
Josh Garnett
Torsten Rotto
Brennan Scarlett
Aziz Shittu
Blake Martinez
Kevin Anderson
Ronnie Harris
Kodi Whitfield
Ra'chard Pippins
Reed Miller
Seniors with another year of eligibility who may or may not come back next year based on their career plans and expected playing time:
Craig Jones
Conner Crane
Chris Harrell
Dontonio Jordan
Sam Shober
Sam Yules
Seniors with another year of eligibility who likely will return for a 5th year
Johnny Caspers
Nick Davidson
Noor Davis
Luke Kaumatule
Dallas Lloyd
Michael Rector
Graham Schuler
Conrad Ukropina
I have no idea in which category to put Barry Sanders, Nate Lohn and Jordan Watkins.

wow, potentially 33 players.......
Re: Senior Day -
BostonCard - 11-23-2015
Gotta believe Lohn and Watkins will be invited back if they want. We still have zero depth at DL next year. It will be a recovering Phillips, Solomon Thomas, and ??, ??, and ??. Basically, redshirt and true freshmen, plus Lohn and Watkins. That means Lohn and Watkins will have a chance to compete for a starting position, and will almost certainly be in the two-deep.
I say Barry J Sanders ought to be offered a chance to come back but may elect to graduate transfer.

Also Luke Kaumatule is on the DL next year. It will be interesting to see what he can contribute. A real improvement in the pass rush through his contributions would be welcomed and needed.

Those are 6 major losses on defense and 4 major losses on offense.Â
Martinez and Hogan will be the hardest to replace in my opinion closely followed by Shittu and Scarlett. The other 6 will be greatly missed but we should have able bodied replacements with decent experience for those 6.
Defense major losses
Brennan Scarlett
Aziz Shittu
Blake Martinez
Kevin Anderson
Ronnie Harris
Kodi Whitfield
Offense major losses
Hogan
Garnett
Murphy
Cajuste

I can hear the narrative now. "Look for Stanford to have a down year as they enter a major rebuilding project."

Given the lack of depth behind them, Shittu and Scarlett are easily the hardest to replace. It comes down to a post-ACL Phillips and Thomas and a bunch of question marks (either freshmen/redshirt freshmen or fifth year seniors who never cracked the lineup).
We have experienced depth behind Martinez; given that Davis was out much of the year, a MLB of Davis/Palma should be fine. Behind that, though, we will struggle with depth given that Perez has been out of his depth for much of the year.
Tough to replace Hogan, but we do have players (Chryst) who could potentially replace him. Still, tough to replace a QB with 3.5 years of starting experience in a pro-style offense.

We've just been coasting on what Harbaugh did.

To me, one of the most positive things of this season is Shaw's willingness to burn redshirts. Maybe it was partly due to necessity, but we have a much stronger team for 2016 because of it. As for QB, I think we will be very pleasantly surprised, whether it is Burns, Chryst and/or Costello. WR is my greatest fear, unless Irwin, Brandt-Sims, and/or Arcega-Whiteside get some playing time and flourish, and/or we take better advantage of our TE studs than we have this year.

After last year, that was not an unreasonable stance. In fact it was more or less the prevailing orthodoxy nationally. Fortunately, this season has answered a lot of questions I, and probably many others, had.
On topic, I would probably add Sanders to the second group. Greedily, I want him to return. But he could be a star somewhere else.
Re: Senior Day -
winflop - 11-23-2015
I wouldn't blame Barry J for one second if he went somewhere else. He can start for a lot of programs. Just a very crowded backfield at Stanford with a junior, sophomore, and redshirt freshman (Scarlett) in the mix. As a senior, he'd be less likely to get snaps unless he distinguished himself from the other three, whose Stanford careers are longer term.

Wonder if this tweet indicates Rector's leanings....:

With Cajuste graduating, losing Rector would hurt, especially breaking in a new QB.

Rector ran for senior day; kind of imagine his eyes are turned elsewhere. Hopefully he and Shaw can talk and keep him at the Farm -- I can't imagine the pros drafting him based on production, and the grad transfer route ... well, Rector will be the #1 WR next year at Stanford. Can he do better than that at another school?
Anyway, that's just the outside opinion; I imagine after a certain time, even a good relationship gets stale.

I can't believe I'm typing this (because at the beginning of the season I made a thread about how I can't believe we have to rely on Ukropina this year based on his past play), but I sure hope he comes back for 1 more year!
He's got ice in his veins, and I'm happy to eat my words on that one :)

Yeah, I agree. I don't think he'd be drafted, and it doesn't make sense for him to go to transfer, unless he really wants to go somewhere where they throw the ball more. But again, if he's looking to move on... not much you can do. It would be tough to lose him though. We'd have Irwin as a returning receiver with experience, and not much after that. After that it's IBS, true freshmen, and passing to our tight ends and running backs. We'd need a couple of those freshmen WR's to contribuet right away.

We still have Owusu, right?

Sure hope Rector comes back. Shaw has said that a few players have participated or walked twice at senior day. And there's also
Arcega-Whiteside.
