When will Stanford Football win a National Championship? (Poll) - amartinsu13 - 12-12-2015

I was having this debate with some friends last night.

For the last couple years Stanford has been that 1 or 2 games away from contending for the National Championship.

With how good our recruiting classes have been (especially excited for this incoming 2016 class), when do you think we will realistically make it to the promised land?

I'm voting for "within 10 years," but I definitely think we have the talent to do it within 5 years.

Heck, I'm really excited for the 2017 season: McCaffrey back as a senior (if he stays), Chryst with a year of experience, Bryce Love, Trent Irwin, maybe some 2016 guys like Robertson, lots of athletic talent on defense.

What do y'all think?  And please don't complain about the "woofing gods"... threads like this are what fan boards are all about.

Shouldn't there be an option for "I don't care, I'm just enjoying this great ride"?

I would've liked to put more options like a "never," but there are only 5 options in a poll :(

These two recruiting classes--last year's and this one--are going to spike the talent level here,

These will be much more explosive and dangerous teams, able to attack an entire field
vertically and horizontally.

It will have more touchdown makers--guys who can score with with a couple good blocks, in a blink.

It will play true top down defense, with defensive backs that can force the action back into the box,
and give the coordinators a brobdingnagian range of options--
and give offenses a confusing array of looks.

It will have defenders that can minimize explosive plays against us,
and force offenses to slowly work their way downfield,
and find what seems like 13 defenders when they get to the red zones.

It won't have elite, top two SEC team defensive lines,
but should have lines that are more than good enough,
given the eight men behind them.

This should, very soon, put Stanford into the randomness game.
It will have the talent to play for national championships,
but will lack what every team lacks:
the ability to overcome sheer randomness.

Do you think the odds of us winning in any given year are above or below ~7%? Because that's the cutoff where, in 10 years, we have ~50/50 odds of winning one. If Oregon starts to decline and Washington's apparently liftoff never really comes, we'll have a good shot.

We seem to always be exceptional on one side of the ball and just short on the other side.  And I suppose that's bound to happen, given how hard it is to just be exceptional on one side of the ball, so that's more likely the case even for the historic programs.  But it's a learning curves for the program and coaches, and it comes down to whether they learn enough and have the right luck to get exceptional on both sides.  While Shaw has some qualities we'd like him to improve just a little to get over that hump, he has shown exceptional strengths in the other areas to get us where we are.  It comes down to whether you think he will learn and adapt enough to get over that last hump; I, personally, think he will, though it might take closer to 10 years than 2.  But that's the fun part of the ride!

Not so. There's a link at the bottom to "add option."

Re: When will Stanford Football win a National Championship? (Poll) - Hulk01 - 12-12-2015

it's tempting to assume that we will have to overcome a wicked SEC front three/seven to win a title.

But it wouldn't have to work out that way.
The SEC winner might not have one of those fronts--
think this year's Florida team, where the genius as at the corners.

And the SEC winner could be in the opposite bracket, and lose--
to some other team without a classic SEC front.

Regardless, we almost will have to team that can run inside and throw well;
we will need offensive versatility.

It's also tempting to think we will have to outstanding in every position group,
that a National Champion have nothing but elite units.
That sure doesn't seem true this year,
and I'm not sure its been true of more than couple number ones--if that.

Even in a 10-year window, we are likely to have a poorer season in 5 of those years....the even ones....because of our schedule imbalance.

Somebody remind me why C.al didn't want to do a BG at Levi's so that our home-and-home schedule would be in different years? Would that have thrown their two-year schedule out of balance?

They felt it would be ceding home field advantage for that year.

Quite frankly, all sorts of pieces need to fall in place for this to ever happen, but just knowing that it might possibly be possible is enough for me to continue my willing suspension of disbelief.....

Nice position at impact!!  You got game, Stymie!

Thanks, CornFed.  I coulda been a contender if I'd seriously taken up golf prior to age 35 or so....

So are you an Iowan? (given corn and aw that) and if so, are your loyalties divided?  If so, follow your heart.

No.  I wasn't really an Iowa fan growing up.  My sympathies were probably more w/ Iowa State, since my dad went there.  But I didn't really root for either passionately.  I was a bit more of a Husker hater, because that was long enough in the past that they were in their glory years and, living in western Iowa, there were a lot of bandwagon Husker fans around.  It is bad enough to be an obnoxious fan of your in-state school.  It is pitiful to be a fan of a neighboring state's flagship team when you didn't even go there.  Pitiful.

So, when I got to Stanford in the Fall of 1970, I was a pretty clean slate as far as college football goes.  Plunkett and Vataha and The Thunder Chickens proceeded to draw a masterpiece on that slate.  The design has pretty much gotten more and more beautiful over the years.  The Buddy years and Walt Harris years, in retrospect, were the struggles that proved the journey is epic.    :D

Does the state of Iowa still have the highest average SAT?

Re: When will Stanford Football win a National Championship? (Poll) - CornFed - 12-12-2015

Last I heard.  And the highest literacy and numeracy rates.

I'm now thinking we'll win the National Championship before we win a Voldemort, if not the same year.  :(
