The heights of Stanford joy - BostonCard - 01-23-2017

In light of the other thread, I thought that for symmetry, we ought to have one on the games have been the most fun to watch?

Football:
1990 vs. Notre Dame - Upset of the #1 Domers
1990 vs. Cal - Revenge of the play
2007 vs. USC - Greatest Upset Ever
2009 vs. USC - What's your deal?
2011 vs. VTech - Orange Bowl
2016 vs. Iowa - Rose Bowl

MBB:
1997 vs. UCLA - Maples Massacre
1998 vs. Rhode Island - Elite eight
2000 vs. Duke - Upset of the #1 Blue Devils
2004 vs. Arizona - Miracle at Maples

I'm sure there are many others.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - French Rage - 01-23-2017

If it's allowed, I'd like to count the streak to end the 2012 season altogether, Hogan coming in against CU, the tough win at home against OSU to keep it alive, the upset of UO to take the lead in the division, and the back-to-back defeats of UCLA to get into and then win the CCG.  It seemed like a ridiculous idea at the start of the CU game, but after it was more and more possible.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - Robbie - 01-23-2017

1982 Big Game. That really was one of the greatest football games ever. Especially with the win to cap off Elway's career.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - Phogge - 01-23-2017

1956 6-0 win over #1 Ohio State and Hopalong Cassidy.
1971 January 1 Rose Bowl win over Ohio State

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - Papa John - 01-23-2017

1982 football win over #1 UW and the ensuing Sports Illustrated cove: "Bombs Away! John Elway Demolishes Washington!" Or something like that.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - Nan3cy - 01-23-2017

I immediately thought of the 1990 win over the Domers. Not because I saw the game, because I didn't. I was at the gathering at my mother's house after my father's funeral. But at one point my brother walked into Mom's living room and told me to sit down and stay calm, and then told me he'd just found out Stanford beat UND. I started to jump up and down and he said hey, I told you to stay calm... I think I just remember that so strongly because up to that point, it had not been a great day.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - teejers1 - 01-23-2017

Moments of pure, unadulterated joy watching Stanford Football:

1.  1990 W at South Bend;
2.  Casey's Run for the Roses at Cal;
3.  Greatest Upset Ever;
4.  Triple OT win at Coliseum; and
5.  Revenge of The Play.

Same feeling watching men's hoops:

1.  Stanford over Rhode Island (and second place is not that close);
2.  Nick Robinson's shot to beat Arizona (Brent Musberger:  "It's a MAD HOUSE in here!");
3.  Stanford over Tim Duncan's Wake Forest team in NCAAs (first time in Sweet 16s?);
4.  Maples Massacre of UCLA; and
5.  The Final Four loss to Kentucky (maybe I'm biased because the FF roadie was all timer, and I might have been over-served . . . BUT I distinctly recall being so happy/proud that Stanford, much to surprise of virtually everyone, went toe-to-toe with Kentucky and arguably should have won the game).

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - CornFed - 01-23-2017

#1 (and no doubt about it)- 1971 Rose Bowl win over a Ohio State, which had just been declared the best college football team in history by SI.

#2 was being in South Bend in 1990

#3 The Greatest Upset Ever

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - Farm93 - 01-23-2017

1990 Big Game - Sure...That was good.
2012 Rose Bowl - For a while it didn't seem like a win would happen in my lifetime.
2011 Football vs USC.  To end the game in an instant on an OT fumble recovery was great.  I was in a very loyal USC section.  The fumble happened in front of my section, so I remember screaming fumble and then screaming they got it, it's over!  After other incidents in LA sporting venues I guess I should be thankful I survived because people around me looked rather angry at my joyful real time commentary.  ;D
1997 MVB NCAA Championship - Sat with Stanford player parents as they finally beat UCLA to get a title.  Real blast
1997 WVB NCAA Championship - A 2-0 lead, turned 2-2 with the wheels looking like they were off the cart, only to pull it back together.
2010 MVB NCAA Championship - The worst to first, and the cancer death backstory were just storybook stuff.  To win a team title in Maples was AMAZING.

In fairness, the basketball victories all merge together.  Still those years when the student section would chant "Down by 30" or 40 or 50 against UCB were lovely times.  The Duke game in Oakland was beyond amazing as the team slowly ate into that Duke lead to then win at the end.

Lower profile but, the Men's tennis championships in 1997 were delightful.  Those at the event got to see Stanford claim NCAA Team Title #6 for the 1996-1997 academic year.  To do it at UCLA made it very meaningful.  Back then it seemed like it would be just few years until Stanford zipped over UCLA.  Would never have guessed that in 2017 UCLA would still be ahead.  Still winning 6 in a year is a uniquely Stanford claim.  Tennis with its 6 court show doesn't quite have the same shared common experience, but it was fun to be there.  Saw 4 of the 6 team titles in person that year.

The 198? win over OK at Norman.  Elway took their secondary apart.  Barry Switzer said after the game the he would never schedule Stanford again.  :)

Quote:2.  Casey's Run for the Roses at ןɐɔ;

That was at Stanford Stadium. But, yes, on my list, for sure.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - BobK - 01-23-2017

Casey's run for the Roses
Plunkett's TD pass 1970 to get to the Rose Bowl
The 1971 and 72 Rose Bowl wins
Paul Carey's Grand Slam in the World Series
Robinson's long basket for the win
Casey score to beat Duke
2004 WVB championship and maybe the best of all years cane last month winning WVB championship

I played football with friends and missed our beating Ohio State and Hopalong  Cassidy.

That would be the 31-14 win over #4 ranked Oklahoma in Norman before 75,811 fans.  Stanford was called for 10 penalties, but Oklahoma gave up 7 fumbles.  No joke, look it up.  Elway was 20-34 for 239 yards.  Stanford gained 457 yards in 90 plays, Oklahoma gained 341 in 53 plays.  Stanford had 27 first downs, Oklahoma 10.

That was my favorite game.  I was still 17.  Amazing.

Second favorite game was 36-31 win over #1 Noter Dame.
Third favorite game was 24-23 win over 41.5 point favorite U$C in 2007.
Fourth favorite was 2015 Rose Bowl shredding over Iowa.
Fifth favorite was 55-21 over U$C "What's Your Deal?"
6th was 2012 win over #1 Oregon.  17-14.

2001 win over #4 UCLA was very cool.  1992 win over Noter dame, 1978 Bluebonnet win over #14 Georgia in Walsh's last year was fun, 1975 tie against #2 Michigan

And as for C.A.L...1990 win was tasty sweet, 1988 19-19 tie was cool when Tuan Van Le blocked the field goal right in front of me, and frankly...any win over c.a.l

Anyone care to pick some in WBB? The national championships were before I became a fan.

One recent memorable win was against UNC in the 2014 regional final at Maples. Stanford fell behind quickly as UNC seemed able to pop in 3-pointers at will. Then they slowly clawed back for the win. Mikaela Ruef was an unexpected hero. The crowd was great for that game, as loud as I've ever heard it.

The decisive win to end UConn's 90 game winning streak, and the upset overtime win over UConn a few years later were great ones too, both at Maples.

Re: The heights of Stanford joy - TheFarm07 - 01-23-2017

Though the buzzer beater by Robinson to beat Arizona in the '03-04 season rightly has gotten a lot of headlines during that year, I remembered an equally dramatic win at Washington State that year as well.

It was my freshman year and we were watching the game in our dorm lounge and I remember we all went crazy in the last 45 seconds as we clawed back, but then Chris Hernandez threw the ball away and then WSU went up by 5 with 22ish seconds left. But Grunfeld got fouled on a successful 3-point shot, then WSU turned the ball over when they couldn't inbound the ball within 5 seconds and then a desperation 3 by Lottich won us the game.

2008 in Spokane. The women, led by Candice Wiggins, beat a No. 1 seed in Maryland to advance to the Final Four. The joy and elation from the players was great to behold. It was Stanford's first Final Four in just over a decade.

I'm sure seeing Stanford beat UConn in the next game would have great fun as well, but there is something special about a good net cutting.

TheFarm07, if you (or anyone else for that matter) wants to read The Bootleg chat transcript of the last 20 seconds of that game, send me a PM with your email.  It was so good that I saved it.  I suggest following the transcript starting right about here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DOQ8ASbn6o&feature=youtu.be&t=3m41s

That game gave me a stress fracture.  I was on a treadmill at the gym watching the game and even though I started to have tibial pain, I lost track of time and of the pain and kept running until we won.  After the euphoria of the run and the win wore off, I could barely stand on the leg.  Didn't run again for over 6 months.
