I am most heartened by the fact that Etch will remain involved going forward. A mature voice of reason that "gets" Band. Thank you, Etch!
Quote:To oversee compliance with the sanctions, I will appoint a four-member
Oversight Committee, which will be dissolved once the current sanctions are
lifted. Membership will consist of representatives from the President and
Provosts Office, Student Affairs, Athletics, and a Band alumna or alumnus.Â
Since I am stepping down as provost at the end of January, President Tessier-
Lavigne has asked me to serve as the President and Provosts Office
representative on the committee, which I am happy to do.Â

This is great news. I am pleased when the community speaks and gets a response that is not strictly a defense of prior bureaucratic institutional actions. I wrote a 3 page letter after the holiday break and the Band asked if they could use it as part of their appeal so I hope I played a small part in getting them back in the stands supporting our teams. Glad Etchemendy is staying involved.Â
Cheers,
Pete F.

That is a completely reasonable ending. Makes me very sad to see Etch go, but pleased he will stay involved with the Band.Â

Is this Etch's last act as Provost?

And a nod to those who bore the political costs of the reversal. The outside world rarely sees and certainly never acknowledges what it takes.

It's a little hard to know for sure without being inside, but this sounds to me like a de facto fairly serious rebuke of both the OCB and Boardman. Probably won't have many consequences since Etch is stepping down, but otherwise I wouldn't have been surprised if Boardman discovered an opportunity he couldn't turn down in about a year or so.

I think one of the things about this whole process is that there has been so little institutional pushback against these offices that they might have overreached a bit. Also, there were very specific institutional breakdowns that were out of the band's control that the student leadership had to deal with.
One of the letters from a band alumni told of being in the student affairs administration when one of the groups was created. He related that most of his colleagues believed it had been put in place to "answer the question of what does X do all day?", where the person involved was a assistant/associate dean-level employee. The implication being that it was almost a makework proposition to justify that individual's employment, that has since grown into a bureaucratic morass for student groups dealing with the administration.

Pretty much. I think I even read or heard from someone that he stayed on longer than originally planned basically to hear/rule on the appeal (rather than throw the new provost into this mess). Really happy he's going to be the President's representative on the committee.

That was my interpretation as well (no inside info here either).
Etch will be around for 5 months(-ish) and I hope will make sure things are in proper order before his departure.

Some new bits (to me, anyway) in Palo Alto Online.
Quote: in its appeal of the sanctions, the band accused the university of valuing "a lucrative brand, a well-manicured image and administrative expedience" over an independent student organization that embodies values like free expression, acceptance and irreverence.

The Incomparable LSJUMB did not play at the women's basketball this evening, but were allowed to play outside Maples afterward. Hearing them made the evening complete.
