Anonymous scouts on McCaffrey + Thomas -
washingtonismoney - 03-07-2017
As usual the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn has gathered some interesting comments from scouts. Here are their thoughts on McCaffrey and Thomas:
Quote:CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY*, RB, Stanford: 5-11, 202. Two-year starter and ex-teammate of Green Bays Ty Montgomery. This guy is a better runner than Montgomery, a better catcher, hes more explosive, more agile and hes probably faster, said one scout. Montgomery is more of a straight-line guy. Far from a workhorse back. Hes a jack-of-all-trades guy, another scout said. He can be your returner and give you 15 snaps a game (at RB). Once he tests and runs 4.38 (he ran 4.49) guys will fall in love with his personality and his genetics.
SOLOMON THOMAS*, DE, Stanford: 6-3, 273. Third-year sophomore. Great kid, one scout said. Team captain. Top worker. Explosive athlete. Plays hard. Runs and chases. Strong hands. More of a 3-technique than a 5-technique, although weight could be a problem at either position. He reminds me of John Randle, said another scout. Excellent quickness and motor.

John Randle is exactly who I thought of as an analog to Solomon Thomas the other day. There aren't too many guys who can successfully play DT by relying on quickness more than size and quickness. I think Randle played DT at 280. But I heard on the NFLN combine coverage that Thomas sees himself as a Michael Bennett type of player, where he plays in a 4-3 scheme as a RDE on run downs and goes inside on pass downs.
This makes sense, and is why I've questioned the projections of Thomas as an OLB in the NFL. Though he could probably be a standup OLB and be OK in pass coverage, that's just not where his abilities will be maximized.

In today's NFL I can't see him inside in a 4-3 without putting on weight. Motor, desire, intelligence are innate in him and barring multiple injury he should have a long career. Perhaps best to ease in his first year but that depends on the team that drafts him.

Then how can Michael Bennett do what he does just about an inch taller and one pound heavier than Thomas? Keep in mind I am not ruling out Thomas adding a few lbs. either.Â
As a Niners fan, I would be quite pleased to get Thomas at #2 if Myles Garrett goes #1.

I think we should trade down. We have too many holes, we need talent.
BTW, does anyone else think Trubisky is going to be a massive failure at QB?

Sports Illustrated's latest mock (posted this morning) has Thomas #11 to NO and McCaffrey #29 to GB.

As a Giants fan, I would love this, and I think it's a good spot for Christian to get a lot of playing time right away. The Giants need more depth at RB and could definitely use a RB who can catch passes with Shane Vereen oft injured lately. Dwayne Harris was a Pro-bowl kick returner for the Giants last year, so I don't know how many reps he'd get there. But I could see them using Christian as a slot receiver now and then, too.
The Giants actually drafted Ed McCaffrey, so there's a bit of history there. I think that he was also the last Stanford alum to play for the Giants.

The Niners should trade down, absolutely. But mock draft makers can't assume trades.

He was certainly the last Stanford player drafted by the Giants, in 1990. Before that, it was Gordy King in 1978. But Greg Comella played fullback for the Giants from 1998 to 2001. I think he was a free agent.

Trubisky feels like one of those guys who should be drafted in the fifth round, and everyone marvels at how he came out of nowhere as he prepares for the Super Bowl. But, he'll get drafted too high and will be lucky to even approach an Alex Smithish career. Just a gut feel.

My memory of Trubisky is staring down his targets in the Sun Bowl, throwing two interceptions, fumbling once, 23-38 for 280 yards, ran 14 times for 38 yards, threw two TDs. True, it was his second worst game of the season, but I thought he looked bad.

A special fondness for the John Randle connection. He and I lived in the same condo complex for several years. One evening as I was entering the building from the garage, I heard a shout and looked back. It was John, asking me to hold the door for him. I've never seen something that massive move that fast; he was next to me about the same time the sound reached me.
He was so compact. Looking at just his width and breadth, you'd say 255 maybe. So there's that comparison to Thomas, too.Â
The other parallel: seemed like a very good guy.

Anyone who watched McCaffrey play knew he wasn't going to run a 4.38. His combine results were pretty much what we all saw on the field: fantastic agility, good explosiveness, fast enough but not elite burner.
Seeing a "scout" predict such a time for McCaffrey makes me wonder what, if anything, the scout actually watched.
On the other hand, I can imagine guys falling in love with his personality and genetics.

Same memory, plus that he fumbled off of the referee.Â
I also remember that on the last play of the game the NC OL blocked everybody but the guy who is predicted to go #2 in the draft. It is quite possible that Trubisky will benefit from better coaching. #understatement

They let like 5 rushers in past the line. It was quite obvious to me that was supposed to be a screen pass.

I just looked at the play again and man it looks terrible for NC, almost as if they were trying to fail. The left tackle was going back for the screen pass? Clearly the left guard thought it was a screen. The right guard and right tackle both picked up the blitzing safety, Ben Edwards. Meanwhile Solomon Thomas and three others were unblocked. I really can't figure out what the play call was supposed to be.Â

Putting it all together, I think it was meant to be a lateral to the left tackle, who had a lot of daylight in front of him. Solomon Thomas got through way too quickly though and blew up the play.
