OT: the Raiders -
Nan3cy - 03-27-2017
I've never been a Raiders fan (though I loved it when Jim Plunketts won himself a couple of Super Bowls). Looking at the 31-1 vote to let the Raiders move to Lost Wages, I find the only reaction I'm having (beyond a sort of generalized sympathy for the Raider Nation) is to wonder: Is that the best haircut Mark Davis can afford? I keep picturing him as a major character in Dumb and Dumber... ???

Take your NFL team to Las Vegas, fine. But to me, the name should be changed, like the Oilers became the Titans and the Browns became the Ravens. Las Vegas Losers would be apt, but of course never fly. Las Vegas Gamblers would be a far more appropriate name. Â

According to an ESPN profile, Davis is so enamored with his mullet/bowl haircut that he travels to Palm Desert so that his preferred barber will maintain it, and used to regularly drive from Oakland to Chico so that his college barber could cut his hair. He is eccentric, probably the only half-billionaire who drives a 1997 Dodge Caravan and uses a 2003 cell phone.

Well probably one of the silliest names is the Utah Jazz. Not a ton of Ben E. Kings up in LDS country. Another silly name is San Francisco 49ers who play 44 miles away from The City. We went from the sensible Gaters to the animal who really doesn't live in the Lake Merced Swamp.
In the long run Oakland will be better off. Now they can concentrate on building a small jewel of a ballpark down by the estuary, getting rid of Billy Ball and giving Bob Melvin some guys who he can win a flag with.
The Nation will attend wherever the R's are since they can raise hell anywhere. It will be great not to have to battle traffic on the Nimitz and make the long climb with six cases and a tripod up to the top of the stadium.

From 88 to 92, the Cardinals were the Phoenix Cardinals. And in 1944, they were the Chicago/Pittsburgh Card/Steelers, thanks to wartime shortages.
The New England Patriots were the Boston Patriots for the first ten years. And the New York Jets were the New York Titans for their first three years.
The Redskins were actually known as the Braves in the first year of their existence (1932).

Interesting, I didn't know about the original 1902 major league Milwaukee Brewers. I knew there had been a minor league team called the Milwaukee Brewers at one time. (Wikipedia says they existed from 1902 to 1952.)

Um, there is precedence with Oakland itself. The Oakland Raiders were once the LA Raiders, and before that the Oakland Raiders.

I just heard today that LV is spending $750 million on a stadium for the Raiders, and another $200 million on infrastructure. The expression that comes to mind is, there's one born every minute...
