Some start times announced, along with TV. Unfortunately, this will make Bryce Love's quest for a Voldemort as there are a lot of late kickoffs.
Rice is at 7 pm on Aug 26 on ESPN/ESPN2 (in Sydney, Australia)
USC is at 5:30 pm on Sept 9 on Fox (at USC)
San Diego State is at 7:30 pm on Sept. 16 on CBS Sports (at SDSU)
OSU is at 6 pm on Thursday Oct. 26 on ESPN (at OSU)
UW is at 7:30 pm on Friday Nov. 10 on FS1 (at home)

Ummm, I wish that the board censoring software would change the "H-isman" award to something other than "", as it makes it look like I forgot a word.

With the Pac-12's broadcast deal the only way to get more than a game or two at that coveted 2PM time slot is to start off as a bad team and then to keep losing big enough to remain undesirable to the broadcast partners for the entire season.
At least the preseason top tier teams get a number of games announced early. With known times one can plan other events for that date, invite colleagues to games/tailgates/etc.Â
FWIW Pac-12 is a west coast conference, and broadcasters want games after 9PM Eastern to fill out their Saturday schedule. For now, only the Pac-12 can really provide Power 5 FBS level games in those later time slots. Even when the Pac-12 returns to negotiate the next TV deal(s) it is hard to imagine the conference will get more early games. Given the debt around the conference I would expect the next deal will provide broadcasters with more late night options, not less.

Hmmm.
It looks like you did forget a word, unless you think the late kickoffs will ensure that Love will get the H-man and that will be an unfortunate result; or the all-knowing board software took out both H-man and the following word.
" Unfortunately, this will make Bryce Love's quest for a [H-man] as there are a lot of late kickoffs."

The UW start time will make for better tailgaiting given it is a workday but wow what a waste of a match-up of potentially top 10 teams to be relegated to a 1030pm Eastern kick-off on a second tier network. It could be one of the biggest games of the year in all of college football with major playoff implications that not a lot of people will see.

No complaints about playing late afternoon/evening games through mid-October. Stanford Stadium becomes a big wok during normal sunny weather in late summer/early fall.

It's worse in the $EC and Big 12, I can assure you :)Â But the lack of harsh shadows bisecting the field will probably help the passing game.

Likely the biggest game of the Pac-12 season is being played at 10:30pm Eastern on a Friday night. Thanks, Larry Scott you are a putz of the highest order.

Larry Scott is overpaid, but I am not sure this particular problem can be placed on him.
For TV broadcasters Thursday and Friday even after East Coast prime time are more valuable than Saturday after prime time. And all three nights after prime time are more precious, rare and valuable than Saturday late afternoon East Coast time.
Some might wonder if the Pac-12 deal was lucrative enough, but the highest bids for any process would be linked to those late night broadcasts. If the Pac-12 AD thought about the process they should have understood the best bids would come from those seeking late night programming, and therefore should have requested a limit on those broadcasts....IF that was important to them. I don't think it was, so that's on them not Scott.
Ironically, the only games in the mid afternoon are often on the Pac-12 Nets. Larry Scott probably is to blame for the Pac-12 Nets, but without those channels the Pac-12 would have no afternoon games at this point as most broadcasters value the Pac-12 for its ability to host live events after the other conferences have completed their events for the day.
Re: Football on TV -
winflop - 05-31-2017
Larry Scott signed a lucrative TV contract that has done significant harm to the conference's national visibility and completely sold out the fans across the conference.

I am annoyed also, but at least we are learning about more kickoff times than at this time last year, which helps me plan a tiny bit more.
I agree with the unfortunate analysis that until the contract is renegotiated, the only way Stanford gets lots of afternoon kickoffs in the short term is to suck its way down to the Pac 12 network.
It does appear the contract was very poorly negotiated, with an exceptional lack of foresight and an utter disregard for fans. My optimistic hope is that the contracts can be altered.
First, we could pre-determine kickoffs and still sell them on a take-it or leave-it basis. I just don't think giving the networks total control benefits anyone very much. How much of a viewership change is there really going to be by having total flexibility to air either arizona state vs colorado OR oregon vs arizona at 7pm? I have looked at the tv ratings for these 7pm games and I can tell you the ratings are pretty miniscule. Giving the networks this flexibility has totally screwed us over for almost nothing. I could see these games netting 1-3M total from advertisers, and how much goes to the conference, let alone the schools? I don't know what share the network keeps vs the conference, but I would estimate the amount that gets to Stanford for total schedule chaos is in the tens of thousands of dollars per last-minute game. But that's total. And if the network had to air arizona vs oregon instead of colorado vs arizona state because people didn't anticipate colorado's strength last year, what would the difference be? It would be a miniscule difference for an already miniscule audience. And ironically, predetermined kickoff times could very well INCREASE ratings because if arizona and oregon fans knew months in advance what time the game was on, more of them could make plans to watch it, even if their team sucked. And in turn, they are pissing off fans nationwide, screwing season ticket holders, reducing local support due to last-minute scheduling, and greatly decreasing ticket sales and stadium sales.
They could just determine a set of candidates of marquee matchups and stick them at either 2:30 for, let's face it, the SC's and UCLA's, or 4:30 for anticipated marquee matchups like Stanford-Wasu. Then the network could choose which prescheduled 2:30, 4:30 and 7pm games to air. Every now and then if there's a surprise team a possible afternoon game will have to live with a 7pm audience, or a possible nationwide 4:30 game will only get a regional audience at 2:30, but overall, the schools would come out way ahead.
Or, if they are really worried about missing out on a a brobdingnagian unexpected matchup, they could make a handful of kickoffs at either 2:30/4:30 tbd, just in case there is a surprise key game and they want to get a nationwide, network audience.
Then, they could just pre-schedule the rest of the games. Sure, maybe one week the take-it or leave-it 7pm option will be an oregon-arizona instead of an arizona state-colorado, oh no. Still a much better choice than airing some WAC game.
I'm telling you, the ratings for these 7pm games is puny. While it's probably worthwhile to offer the networks a pre-determined, pre-scheduled 7pm game each week, the claim that throwing everyone's schedule into last-minute chaos to let networks optimize for substantial revenues is a myth and a lie.
Re: Football on TV -
Farm93 - 06-02-2017
Until the contract is renegotiated?!!!?!
That just is not going to happen. The Pac-12 AD budgets NEED this TV money. Many of them have already spent the current TV deal revenue AND more. The deal will stand. Given that cord cutting is now a real concern it is likely a renegotiation could include massive reductions in payouts, so best to not even go down that route for the ADs.
FWIW - When the NEXT set of deals are negotiated I would expect less favorable terms for "us". Don't care if the deals are negotiated by Scott, a committee of Pac-12 presidents and ADs, or any of you. The marching orders from the schools will be to get as much money as possible, leave no option unexplored. The person at the table will be doing their job if they follow orders. The alums, athletes, fans will not be THAT person's worry. The ADs will scream, "Just show me the money!"
Here are some options for the next money grab -
Wednesday games. NFL owns Thursday now. Since the Pac-12 gives the schools a bye before the game anyway...How about Wednesday? Wednesday 6PM Pacific? - Sold!
100% After Dark/Under the Lights Conference? Broadcasters don't need Pacific time day games as the other Power 4 conferences can cover those time slots. The next deal could give schools scheduling certainty be eliminating anything before 4PM. (Almost joking). Evening and Late night only? - Sold!
It doesn't matter if the ratings are puny. The ratings for these broadcasters are better than they would be for rebroadcasts of earlier games which is what you will often see on those channels now. ESPN, TNT, the NHL Network and the NBA Network have all become very fond of repeating earlier sporting events now. Pac-12 After Dark is a better draw than a repeat. That's our conference's value proposition at the moment. The Pac-12 during the early afternoon is not quite as compelling as the other options. Pac-12 After Dark! Best to own it. Can any other Power 5 conference start a game at midnight Eastern? ummm, maybe the SEC, so forget I asked ;)
It is not about the actual ratings of the games, it is all about the payouts. If the payouts drop a lot because TV networks can't justify giving the Pac-12 big money then maybe the formula swings back to the ticket holders. However in that world the Pac-12 is likely in a world of hurt if the BigTen and SEC are pulling in $40+ million per school per year on TV contracts.

There is a strong case to be made that the late game schedule cost Stanford three Voldemort's. I think Newton was the superior player in Andrew's soph year even if he was an under the table pro. Toby, Andrew in '11 and Mac in '15 were the best players in the country and close enough in the vote that early TV times might have been the difference. The Stanford administration is mum on the point and it appears that they offer no resistance to late kickoffs and last minute scheduling.
That said, it doesn't matter to the league and its bottom line-conscious administration. So now I can pick the games I wish to attend because you can always find a ticket if you really want to go. I'm sure that Larry What's his Name could care less.
