OT: McCaffrey -- NFL rule keeping me from OTAs "sucks" -
JJJ - 06-07-2017
Since I've got no more college baseball to watch, just surfin' and found this:
Quote:Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey isnt allowed to participate in Organized Team Activities because of an NFL rule keeping rookies off the field until their colleges end their spring semesters. McCaffrey is not a fan of that rule.
It sucks, McCaffrey told the teams website, its really tough.
McCaffrey went to Stanford, where final exams arent over until June 14, so until then hes not allowed at the Panthers facility. Thats true even though McCaffrey isnt even enrolled at Stanford anymore the rule applies whether the player is currently a student or not.

Ironic that he can't quit school even though he did. Love it
Great rule BTW.Â

Well, he can at least spend his time learning their playbook and watching film on premises...right?

It says he's not allowed on the premises. I'm thinking the rule needs to be changed.

It's an excellent rule designed to keep drafted players in school. Just outstanding.Â

Can someone explain to me how this rule helps the NFL?

I don't think it is a rule meant to help the NFL, except to shield it from accusations that they are creating an environment where newly drafter players feel pressured to abandon school a few months early.

It helps the NFL look like they are encouraging students to stay in school and finish their degrees. (Or at least to not waste their spring term by quitting in the middle, so that they'll have more credits towards a later graduation.)

The article notes the NFL explains it is in place to encourage players to stay in school. The NFL gets a fair amount of mileage out of their youth sports outreach efforts. The PR associated with stay in school messaging here is probably helpful to those efforts.
Likely the union wanted it too. A lot of NFL players stay in the league for 2 or 3 years and then suffer financially. Anything the union can do to get players to get their degrees is likely supported by the former players now in the "I wish I knew" club. There are a lot more former players than soon to be players, so I would hope former players want this rule.
The rule also helps those that actually want to graduate. If the league allowed soon to be rookies practice if they are no longer in school, then the teams in the league would almost certainly draft drop outs over those still taking classes. That would then mean college players, many without a real chance to get into the league, would drop out of school hoping to improve their chances of making a team as a draft pick or getting selected as an UDFA. In theory, those players could return to school later, but that is tough for many socially, psychologically and financially.
There are others I am sure, but my bet is the league has maintained the rule largely for PR reasons.
The real issue here is that Stanford's calendar year runs late relative to other schools, so CMAC is unable to join even though most of the other rookies are now on the field. If Stanford finished up in early May, like some other schools then this would not be an issue.Â

If the NFL wants players to stay in college, why does it allow players to be drafted three years out of high school? Sorry I still don't see how this rule helps the NFL.

It doesn't help the NFL it helps the athlete in the long run.Â

How? McCaffrey isn't even enrolled right now, from what I've read.

Sorry, BobK, I don't buy it. OTAs start mid-May or later, and most semester schools are done by then. There's no incentive for draftees to enroll in spring semester. And how many draftees from quarter-based calendars enroll in spring quarter? CMac didn't. Did Solomon Thomas?
I suppose the rule helps those very few athletes from quarter schools who are drafted and on the verge of graduation, but if it is the NFL's priority to help student-athletes, then the League should require football players to be at least four years out of high school before they are eligible for the draft.
As far as I can tell, this rule disadvantages athletes from quarter schools who aren't first-round picks like CMac or Thomas--CMac and Thomas are going to make their team's rosters. And no one has articulated how the rule is a positive for the NFL. Unless there's something else that I'm missing, which is entirely possible.

PJ,
I don't think any of us are claiming the NFL's success hinges on this idea. However, the rule is a legacy now. If/when the NFL takes it away they will have some bad PR to absorb. Best to just keep it in place since it really only impacts a precious few athletes at quarter based schools. This program was also in play for Luck, as I recall. In Luck's case it worked well. If the program was not in place would a player like Luck get to finish school? The pressure to get to the practice facility would have been impossible to ignore.
CMac and a few others have to work with their private trainers for a few extra weeks.  :'(
A few others will get to avoid the temptation of NFL training and get their degrees.  8)
It is hard to imagine any single school is a bigger beneficiary of the rule since Stanford's graduation rate would likely be negatively impacted if rookies were allowed to report to training facilities in mid-May, for example. That type of date would be after Notre Dame, Michigan, and a few other universities with higher tier academics finish up, but before Stanford finishes.
So only a few players, like those at Stanford, would be forced to pick between the team and their degree. Over time that likely would transform into a lower graduation rate for Stanford football and/or a noteworthy recruiting edge for other schools.

I really wonder how many units Stanford football players really need in the spring quarter of their senior year in order graduate. I would expect about zero. There may be a very few cases where this last quarter is needed, but I expect darn few. Furthermore, if you are going into the draft, you can take a few extra units winter quarter. You can also sign up for "independent study" in your last quarter that doesn't require you to be on campus. Many people reserve their last quarter to take only "fun" stuff. I suspect it would have essentially zero impact on graduation rates if this rule went away. People who go "early" probably aren't graduating that year anyway.

Depends on the major, but I'd have to agree. One of my friends took a full load all the way through with no extras, and he only needed one lower division course to graduate. He took "Acting for Non_Majors" and now makes his living off-Broadway.
