Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - Spiny_Norman - 10-23-2017

http://www.gostanford.com/documents/2017/10/22/depth.pdf

RB is listed as Love or Scarlett or Speights or Maddox.  Appears that it will be a game time decision.

Love seemed ok coming out of the tent at the Oregon game. My guess is we'll slow-play him. If he's not needed (which he shouldn't be), then I'd play Scarlett and Speights and save him for the end-of-season gauntlet. Of course, this might totally sink his chances of winning the Award That Shall Not Be Named. But maybe he'll be runner-up, as is tradition!!!

Given Shaw's quotes Love will be fine

For the oregon st. game?  The FB video starts at the tail end of the Love discussion so I couldn't make head or tails of his status for this week.

According to the depth chart, Thomas Schaffer is the backup to Dylan Jackson at DE.  Has anyone seen Schaffer on the field at all this year? I don't remember even seeing him on special teams.

Also, despite a rather mediocre performance Jordan Perez is apparently the full-fledged starter over Joey Alfieri at ILB now. Alfieri has played in the last three games, so one would think that whatever ailed him has abated, but Perez remains the starter. Quite a change from last year, when Joey was All-Conference honorable mention.

Schaffer played in the Oregon game.  Maybe Rice but I don't know

And Schaefer had a pretty massive brace in his arm in the Oregon game.  I don’t remember an injury yet something must have happened.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - ChicagoCard - 10-24-2017

Schaeffer played in the 2nd half against Rice.

Shaw did say that Alfieri had earned more playing time.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - OutsiderFan - 10-24-2017

Schaffer played against Oregon.  He was wearing the same elbow brace J.J. Watt has always worn.

Though we obviously wish the DL were bigger and better, it's truly amazing how many guys on the depth chart have played and contributed significantly.  It's quite a deep team.

As for the RB position, nice to see Speights getting some opportunities.  He was quite impressive in Spring.

Not an expert in what causes someone to win or not win the H.eisman, but I have to believe that if Love kicks butt against the Washington schools and also ND, whether he plays or doesn't play against a one-win team won't affect his chances much.

It definitely will. Love's only chances are:

1) Break Sanders's record, or at least 2500 yards.
2) Help us to win the Pac-12 while Barkley stumbles and PSU doesn't play in the B1G CG.

Sitting against ORST makes #1 basically impossible. Also, Publius will be happy because all Stanford fans need to be rooting for OSU to smother PSU this weekend.

Unfortunately, it can't work that way.  Most of the voters will have cast their ballots by Halloween, based exclusively on pre-season ESPN promo packages, as supplemented by who(m?)ever seems to be playing best for Alabama when they vote [insert gratuitous Damien Harris reference here].

The only place it may hurt is the numbers. If BL needs 2400 yards or better to win, 200 against OSU would help. OTOH, Shaw might pull him if we are up big, so that may not happen even if he plays. I am sure Shaw will decide based on what he thinks works best for the team. What that is, we shall see.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - phxfan - 10-24-2017

If Love "could have played the 2nd half of the Oregon game if needed" then he should be fine for this weekend.  The reality is that nearly all Voldemort winners needs games like this to feast on.  In retrospect Love should have been fed the rock much more against Rice considering he had a buy week afterwards.  He should be able to rack up close to 200 yards by half time.  If he comes out early then his campaign can still be on track.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - Treebound - 10-24-2017

Here's hoping Love breaks off some big runs early and gets to the house.  He needs both the yards and the TD's to get the invite.  It would be nice for him to get both before the half as I do think Shaw will rest him.

I was told by a colleague that was with the Stanford group in NY for the 2015 ceremony that CMAC met a voter or two that actually admitted that they had never seen him play.  That's pathetic.

I still think the vote should come after the bowl games.  Cmac and Vince Young both were robbed in what would have been obvious H victories.  That Rose Bowl win over Iowa was the best Stanford performance I have ever seen!  Dominating Intellectual Brutality along with Farmers Only dot com!

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - teejers1 - 10-24-2017

I'm not buying "could have played in 2H of Oregon, if needed."

The #1 task for Stanford Thursday night will be trying to stop/contain Nall/OSU running game.
I'm sensing the #2 task will be trying to field a productive offense with Love not playing.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - JohnR34231 - 10-24-2017

OK, I guess I have definitely been outvoted on that one.
Regardless of whether or not Love needs 200 yards against OSU to be in consideration for the H.eisman, I will be surprised if he gets them, because a) he may not play (I see where it is "day to day" with him), and b) even if he does, I think Shaw will pull him before he gets to those kind of numbers to save him for the Washington schools.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - phxfan - 10-24-2017

If he can get 150 in the first half against a decent Oregon run defense then he should be able to put up big numbers against OSU.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - lex24 - 10-24-2017

If he doesn’t play (which I think is a likelihood) OSU will be Trevor Speights coming out party.

As long as the line controls they will be fine offensively. More worried about Nall.

Re: Depth chart for OSU - Love may or may not play - lex24 - 10-24-2017

First, Shaw will not be involved in the initial step.  Either the Dr clears him or he doesn’t. Coach has no input in that. Which is the way it must be.

Second even if cleared, Shaw may sit him. The questions to me are  (1) if he plays is he significantly more susceptible to aggravating the injury (by that I mean does he have an increased risk of worsening the injury) and (2) does that risk drop appreciably if he sits another 8 days.

If those are answered yes and yes, I’d certainly think about sitting him.  If otoh this is something that will be a bit painful at times but not a further risk, I leave it to Love.
