who the highest paid football coach in the Pac-12 is. You probably won't guess #2 either. And you certainly would never imagine they would be in the Top 7 in all of college football.

Shaw's note indicates it comes from 2015 tax filings. My guess is that "winning the conference and Rose Bowl" gave him some nice incentives.
As an aside, last time I tried to find Shaw on the relevant form he wasn't on it, despite almost certainly being more highly paid than the people listed. I figured we were doing some shenanigans to keep his salary secret, but this was before the 2015 form would be available so perhaps that has changed and we'll have a better (even if consistently out-of-date) idea of his pay going forward.

And the lowest paid Power 5 coach is......Justin Wilcox.
More evidence that Cal did it right. Good for them.

I like how they just list everyone at 50 hours/week. I know Shaw takes it fairly easy in the summer, but there's no way that's close.

Note we payed Shaw roughly twice what Nebraska paid Mike Reilly.
We are not Nebraska. LOL

How much do we pay Prexy Marc Tessier-Lavigne? My guess is that it is a small fraction of what Coach Shaw gets.
Reminds me of the work I did on Wall Street in the mid-late 60's during my summers when at Stanford. The hedge fund guys made more than the guy who ran the place, had a separate elevator, and had his name on the door.
If I ran the place I'd pay Coach Akina more than Coach Shaw......

Wonder if this will make any readers here more "open" to the notion that it's not out of bounds to criticize Coach Shaw. I imagine most here would gladly take "the heat" (and that's an overstatement if there ever was one - do Stanford fans ever really bring heat on a coach?) for a cool $5M per.
Good for Shaw - I'd say he's earned his pay. But I will never feel sorry for him as a result of any criticism he receives for his coaching decisions.

I think (but am not certain) that there is little resistance here to the notion that one may criticize coach Shaw.
I think many people believe that much of the specific criticism you aim at coach Shaw is incorrect (i.e. are either not true, not bad things, or not particularly consequential).

Also it's unclear to me why making $5M would make one fair game for criticism but $1.6M (the lowest Pac-12 coach) wouldn't.

Exactly. I dont know what Buddy Teevens made while here, but given our AD at the time I bet is was close to the lower end of the spectrum. I would not have called on anyone to hold back his criticism of Buddy (or Walt) because they were only making ~$1 million or whatever they made.
Conversely, the fact that Shaw makes $5 million is really neither here nor there with regards to criticism generally speaking. But as CT notes, much of that criticism is based on flawed premises, so the fact that Shaw makes $5million doesnt make it any less wrong.

Happy to see Tara among the top 5, and appropriately paid more than Dawkins (who wasnt in the top 5). She deserves it!

Notre Dame was getting what it paid for. Purple Face Kelly waaay down there at 64th place $1.645,867. (There's gotta be something wrong with that. Notre Dame football is a MUCH bigger deal). Almost makes you want to congratulate them for being so thrifty. Compared to Arizona's Rodriguez, UDub's Petersen looks like an absolute steal.

Shaw went from $2.2m in FY14 to $5m in FY15.Â
Tara was not in the FY14 document (so less than $1.1m, which was the salary of the 5th most compensated employee) to making almost $2.3m.
Someone loosened the purse strings. Both coaches deserve it as one of the top 5 coaches in their respective sports.
I wonder if Tara is the highest paid female coach in the country.

Geno is not a female coach. But as of 2015, there was this article:

Do they list bonuses separately? I suspect purse strings are part of it, but it could be bonus payouts. I'd be really quite surprised if winning the Rose Bowl doesn't net Shaw a pretty penny, (though I guess that wasn't a particularly good season for Tara so I dunno).
