Just horrible.

Worst starting linebacker I've seen Stanford field in the Sharbaugh era.
That said, I know he's put his all into this program and I applaud that.

When all is said and done, Loves injury was the most significant, but IMHO losing Barton for the year has to be #2. Losing Holder was #3.

Deciding to move Alfieri to OLB was #4. Need to put him back inside next year and put Perez on the scout team where he belongs.

What does it say that Alfieri couldn't beat Perez out? Either the coaches are morons, or maybe the Alfieri experiment was not a take.
And, with Kalambayi and Tyler both gone, we probably need Alfieri outside next year.

All four were terrible developments.

The Alfieri situation is and was bizarre. A big error, given that Alfieri was a very productive OLB in 2016. I'm not saying this makes the defensive coaches bad or anything, but it's a big blunder to turn a productive starter into a backup to a mediocre player.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't think Alfieri has been that great this year, inside or outside. Maybe solid.

Maybe not in the minority. For me, I'm OK with solid. A consistent solid wins a lot of games.

I am sure his injury had a lot to do with it. But nonetheless, it was disappointing that after Barton went down, Alfieri didn't step up and seemed to languish behind Perez. It's really too bad the experiment didn't work out because we really needed help on the inside. But looking at the depth chart going forward, he will definitely be needed outside next year.

the LB recruiting pipeline or lack there of is worrisome.Â
Re: Perez is a minus - ChicagoCard - 12-02-2017
Too bad for a guy to be a whipping boy here. Not sure Palma or Branch would have been anywhere close on the coverage of the tight end early in the game. Barton got beat on a play like that against SDSU.

I have mixed emotions about the amount of abuse Perez gets -- he didn't name himself starter, the coaches see him as better than the alternatives -- Palma when in hasn't been impressive either (I give a pass to Alfieri because of whatever injury he had coming into the season -- he hasn't seemed right all year). With all that said, I don't recall ever seeing a starting ILB 'watching' as many plays as Perez.

Calling out individual players like this is below the character of the discussion board. The coaches decide who plays. There's no benefit to assuming the players are doing anything other than trying their best.

I don't quite get this sentiment. If you're going to discuss the game, it seems odd not to discuss the individual players' performance. Perez's was poor. He may have been trying his best, but it wasn't good enough. None of this is saying Perez is somehow a bad person, just that his performance was inadequate.
There might be a point, as ATLcard, where the amount of abuse is scapegoating one kid for bad or malicious reasons, but there's no getting around the reality that Perez had a very dumb penalty and got roasted in coverage multiple times. To Perez's credit, he'd upgraded his play in the latter half of the season, but the championship game was a reversion to previous form.

The originator of this thread also previously labeled one of our players a failure.

I have no doubt he is trying his best and the coaches are doing their best to develop him. But the performance on the field is not where it needs to be for a starting ILB in a major college program.
