Love in the bowl game? - JohnR34231 - 12-02-2017

If Love is headed to the NFL as most seem to think, any chance he will skip the bowl game to ensure his ankle is 100% for the pro workouts? What does everyone think?

Depends on what he's heard from NFL sources.  If he gets assurances that he's in the first round, even at the bottom, I think he's gone.  Second round...closer call.  Third round, I think he returns to Stanford.

So let's say that the reports are right and he's a second round pick.  It also depends on how close to 100% he is.  If he's less than 80% or 85%, I don't think he plays.  Period.  I think if he was healthy, he'd have torched USC's run defense.

So, if we make the Holiday Bowl assumption, the opponent will be either Iowa or Michigan.  Supposedly the Holiday Bowl prefers Iowa, but UMich's other choice would be the Outback Bowl in Tampa, and UMich has gone to Florida two straight years.  I don't know that the Big 10 wants them in the same place three years in a row.  At any rate, UMich gives up 3.56 yards per rush, #21 in the country; Iowa gives up 4.14 ypc, #36 in the country.  If he plays and rushes for 160+ against either, that may rise his stock.

Make sense. Just wonder how much his draft position depends on how he does in the NFL workouts. I would think they would want to see how he performs and ensure that there are no lasting effects from his injury before he gets an indication of how high he will go in the draft.

Any of our reasonable bowl destinations would be at least 3 weeks off, right? His ankle will probably be close to 100% by then.

The Holiday Bowl is 25 days from today.

Re: Love in the bowl game? - Snorlax94 - 12-02-2017

Not to nitpick, but the Holiday Bowl is 26 days from today.

I panicked for a moment. If we’re playing in the Holiday Bowl, I get back from visiting family the 26th and drive all day the 27th to get to SD before the 28th...  FF is the 27th.

Re: Love in the bowl game? - hayaka - 12-02-2017

Love still needs about 15-20 yards to get to 2000 for the year.  Could that be a factor in his decision?

I think it is highly likely he skips the bowl game. His ankle is a mess I'm not sure it was even 50% last night. Even if he stops playing now it'll be mid-January at the earliest before he really starts preparing for NFL combine & team workouts. If he plays in the bowl game that calendar shifts back an entire month which gives him basically no time to train/prepare.  Combine is Feb 27 - Mar 5.

Re: Love in the bowl game? - teejers1 - 12-02-2017

Love is Love (and not our former RB).

He will play in the bowl game.  That's just who he is (no "I" in team).

Re: Love in the bowl game? - winflop - 12-03-2017

If he's going to the NFL he will likely skip the bowl game. His ankle will likely take at least a month to heal, maybe longer. Practice & bowl game will cause further damage and push that timeline out several weeks.  With the combine at the end of February, playing in the bowl game leaves him little time to prepare.

Re: Love in the bowl game? - Mick - 12-03-2017

I hope he skips the bowl game.  I'd like to see him do well at the combine, get drafted high and succeed in the NFL.  We have other quality backs, and I'd like to see what they can do, same as I would like to see Costello's air attack with the WRs and TEs.

I don't know what will happen. If Love tells Shaw he is going to enter the draft, I hope Shaw, with the full support of the team, tells Love that he has already gone far beyond the call of duty, and that he isn't going to play in the bowl game. It is time for the team and the fans to give back to somebody who has endured so much pain and gone beyond what anyone should ask, let alone expect. Let him get ready for the combine. If Love decides not to go, do the same thing but for different reasons. We want him healthy for next year. There is no "I" in team, but sometimes the team has to collectively take one for a teammate. IMHO, this is one of those times.

Re: Love in the bowl game? - martyup - 12-03-2017

I hope he plays in the bowl game, has a brobdingnagian game,  returns to Stanford next season and breaks the rushing record,  wins the Hypesman, gets drafted in the 1st round, breaks records in the NFL, goes to med school,  becomes an excellent doctor, returns to Stanford as Shaw's RB coach, is elevated to HC when Shaw retires (as the winningest coach in NCAA history) with a 50 million dollar guranteed 5 year contract, and leads Stanford to 5 national championships.  ;D

What can I say?  I really like this guy and I want the best for him.

I'm voting for this timeline as well.

I think if his ankle is right, and with a few weeks to rest it probably will be, he'll play.

Oh, I forgot.  He marries a tall track star and has a boy, a girl, a boy, a girl, and another boy.  They all get into Stanford.  The boys play football.  The oldest breaks his dad's rushing record, the middle boy breaks all Stanford receiving records, and the youngest breaks CMAC's APY record.  The oldest daughter leads the basketball team to a NC.  The youngest daughter sets NCAA records in track and wins 3 gold metals in the  Olympics.    All of his kids become doctors. ;)

And he finds a cure for cancer after his football career is over.

Love Martyup's scenario!
I am hopeful Bryce will return for another season.  Finishing his degree is important if he is serious about becoming a doctor.  Finishing with his cohort, another year at Stanford, is priceless.  Breaking some more records would be golden, especially for us fans.  (NFL has lost some of its luster anyway, IMHO.)

Re: Love in the bowl game? What would bring him back? - ADPATERSON - 12-03-2017

The easiest prediction is he leaves for NFL... if he is a first rounder.
He might have in front of him as bulkier NFL style RBs: Barkley (PNST), N.Chubb (GEOR), R.Freeman (OREG), R.Jones (USC), Gaskin (WASH), Lindsey (COLO) ?  In the NFL is he more of a Glyn Milburn wing / slot back?
Sure he runs tough in college, but the NFL is brutal -- like playing Alabama or Clemson every week.
What other factors?
1) His parents want him to finish to setup for Medical School... He talks about it.
2) Next year's team looks better than this year's with a strong OLine, and a stronger lineup at QB.
-- Does the team believe they have a legit shot at a Playoff spot?  I think so.
-- If Love comes back, I think Stanford starts in the Top Ten, and is favored to win the Pac12.
3) Win that stiff-arming bronze thing.  No, really.  Mayfield is gone; Love would be the front runner.
-- What is the signing bonus value of the statue in NFL contracts?

What does this mean? Are you starting a collection to pay for Bryce's combine prep? How do the fans "give back" in any scenario?
