San Diego State At Stanford -
SteveAztec - 07-28-2018
Hi all. This should be one hell of a game. Here are some thoughts from an Aztec fan...
1. I sure wish Bryce Love had went to the NFL.
2. I am very sure that Stanford players/coaches/fans were not real happy about losing in San Diego last year.
3. You have us at home. Of course that will be a big advantage.
The Aztecs are pretty good this year again. As good as last year will remain to be seen. The OLine were almost all Redshirt Freshman and sophs last year. So the Oline will be big and tough. We don't have Rashaad Penny but we are deep at running back. We have a Senior QB who has started since his mid Frosh year.
I will be coming up to that one and it looks like a decent road crowd from San Diego will be there. We are hoping for a great game and a close win by the Aztecs.
I am curious of the thoughts of Stanford fans on this game.

You will find that most Stanford fans are realistic to pessimistic. This is born of living through years of mediocrity before Harbaugh came on board. Bolstered by the fact that Stanford lost to the Aztecs last season, you will be hard pressed to find disrespect or dismissiveness lobbed at SDSU by the Cardinal or Cardinal fans. As is common among the fans of ranked football teams, we have dreams of a National Championship dancing in our heads. While the stars would truly need to align for that to transpire, we are currently undefeated and the Aztecs stand in our way to the first W. We can be 100% sure that one team is going to lose and the loss will be painful for the players and the fans. Have a wonderful trip to the fabulous campus of Leland Stanford Junior University. May the teams play with impeccable sportsmanship, may the refs make the correct calls, and may the best team be triumphant.

I think predictions are hard, harder
at the beginning of the season, and I’d say especially so this year because Stanford is still recovering from some injuries.
Stanford also needs some new players to step in and step up. I’ve heard some heartening things from some interviews, but who knows until they’ve been tested in some games.
If Stanford really is at 100% on opening day, I’m optimistic because Stanford knows to respect what a quality opponent SD State is, and Stanford apparently now has a pretty good home field advantage — they never lost at home last year despite playing ranked teams like Notre Dame and Washington.
But SD State is one of the top 25 opponents currently on the schedule, which is always going to be tough.
Have a wonderful trip to the Bay Area. Traffic could be bad so you might want to come early and enjoy either the campus or the area. The campus itself may be somewhat empty because school doesn’t usually start until late September.

I almost never make predictions. But I'll make one here.
We smoke these guys.
Payback.

I don't think I've ever seen Terry engage in smack talk. If Terry is bullish, I'm bullish. Go Card.
Cheers,
Pete F.
ps. If I didn't go to Stanford and had also passed on Cal, I would have an SDSU Aztec tattoo on my arm.

It’s the preseason for Shaw. Few wrinkles and a close game, something like 27-24 either way. Rocky can coach.

Hey SteveAztec, how much will SDSU miss last year's defensive coordinator? I'f I'm not mistaken, he left to join Herm Edwards at ASU.

Here's the basics to set you up for Steve's specifics: Head Coach Rocky Long is a long time defensive guru. He came to SDSU as the DC under Brady Hoke. When Hoke went to Michigan, Long was promoted to HC. The defense is Rocky's baby and he has developed DCs to take on the day to day details, maybe even the game day play calls. I'd expect SDSU will be using the same defense; employing lots of linebackers as hybrid Dlinemen or hybrid LB/safeties; lots of different fronts and effective blitzing for both run and pass situations.

We lost because of Keller Chryst. He was absolutely terrible that game. 9-20 and 2 interceptions? He repeatedly through the ball into double coverage and was too slow and too late. It was our fault that we lost that game. We're expecting something different now we have a different and competent QB in charge.

We lost 2 Coaches to ASU and yes it will hurt. Danny Gonzales and Tony White. Both were keys on the defensive side of the ball. White Coached the D back and Corners.
I just heard an interview with Rocky on these losses. He mentioned the continuity as the biggest problem. The players were used to the coaches we lost. And it takes time to get used to the new coaches. That will be an early season problem for us.
I will say this about the defense. Although the loss of Gonzales and White will hurt, the Defensive Coordinator who runs our defense is actually Rocky Long. Its Rockys 3-3-5 defense and he runs all parts of it in the end.

Correct Uncle. Nothing much will change with the D.

Yep, when the game was on the line, neither the offense nor the defense could deliver.
Reminiscent of Stanford football in the "bad old days".

Anyone got a link to the 2005 UC Davis game?

There are *other* Stanford games on YouTube.

Ha! For the record, I got about three plays in, saw someone named Noble Hall sack Chryst. Looked him up, of course he's a senior this year.
That will be the extent of my "scouting."

Even so, I would rank the SDSU loss 4th on the list of most painful last season:
1. USC conference championship game
2. Alamo Bowl
3. WSU
4. SDSU
one of the 4 Noble Truths - to be a Stanford football fan is to know suffering

SDSU is first, easily. Here's why I reconcile the others.
1. 6 days rest, USC had a bye week, Bryce still not 100%
2. I wrote the game off as soon as Justin Reid got hurt. And before that, half the defense was already made up of second stringers.
3. Alex Grinch had our number (and I honestly thought Falk was gonna carve our defense up like a turkey)
