Per Shaw.

The quote said he is "available" which seems to be carefully worded. I am not sure that means he will play.  He may sit out Q1 and play on an as needed basis only?

What exactly does “as needed” mean? Unless we’re up 30 points in the fourth quarter, everyone is needed.

Don’t mean that as a critique of you, donkey, because I’ve seen a lot of people use the term. Even Shaw seems to go by it sometimes (e.g. AT Hall in Oregon game). I just don’t understand it.

I know it's not what he said, but I interpreted it as "If we can get away without playing him and still do well, I don't want to risk any further injury to him." FWLIW.

He was fully suited up for warmups.

He probably should not have played. And frankly I hope he doesn’t play again unless he’s 100%. He’s got an NFL career ahead of him. He’s given an awful lot to Stanford. They owe it to him to let him completely heal before putting him out on the field again.

at this point, i think Speights and especially Scarlett have played well enough that we shouldn't use Bryce until it's no longer a risk.
and congrats on post #1,000.

I agree even if that means we don't see him play again, which I think is likely after he reinjured it last night. I am sooooo pissed at Shaw about this. Love missed now-2+ games this year due to his number being called for him on stupid plays - first the concussion against U$C and then the ankle injury at ND. Maybe his ankles are just fragile and it was due to happen again, what do I know.

RE: Bryce Love will play tonight - Vandelay - 10-19-2018

I really don't know what Stanford was thinking sending Love out there to play last night.  He obviously is not even close to 100% and they are ruining both his body and his NFL career prospects.

Would think the NFL is more concerned that he gets hurt too much then they are he would be ruining his body because he is playing with a gimpy ankle.  In fact, the NFL wants to see guys willing to play hurt, so Love could improve his stock by playing hurt.

But I agree, given how well Scarlett, in particular played, seems to have been a bad move to play Love at all.  That said, it may be that even with two weeks off, Love's ankle won't be healed, he can't hurt it any further, so he might as well play.  It does seem like it's his decision to play based on how he feels.

I was hoping Love would be the exception to the seeming rule, but the history I know says if you have a great season and are draft-eligible, go to the NFL.  So many examples of guys coming back and not being as good, seeing their raft stock actually plummet, and end up costing themselves a lot of money.  Of course, Love said he wanted to return to play with his particular teammates, and was perfectly fine risking falling draft position to have one more year playing at Stanford.

RE: Bryce Love will play tonight - Vandelay - 10-19-2018

Going into the draft, the label on Love will be that he is injury prone.  And, honestly, it's hard to envision Love lasting for very long in the NFL before he suffers another injury.  Not his fault, really.  As a previous poster mentioned, the coaches are calling stupid plays where Love is getting dragged down at all kinds of awkward angles behind the line of scrimmage.

RE: Bryce Love will play tonight - Stymie - 10-19-2018

I think that Love should play if and only if he was completely ready to play, which he was definitely not last night.  As for the rest of the season, maybe he will not be good to go until after the season is over, and if he gets drafted, OK, but if he doesn't, so be it.  Hopefully in the end he will learn to become as spectacularly as good a pediatrician as he has been a running back.

I tend to agree that it was not wise to play Love. He is clearly not close to 100%, and with our OL, you are going to get hit. You will not go through a clean hole.

You comment allows me to bring up yet again my contention that this team plays better when Scarlett is out there. While he did have that tripping penalty (at which point they took him out), the team and more yards and more points with him in. I think Speights has improved in many ways, but he still gets stuffed a lot. Scarlett seems to be more able to make something from nothing. He isn't as fast as Speights, but he is a good receiver and is a bit heavier. So why is Speights now the #2 back? Any ideas here?

Didn't Speights pick up the blitz that allowed Costello to throw the touchdown pass to JJAW?  Don't underestimate the importance of pass blocking for a Stanford running back.

Of course, Scarlett is pretty good pass blocking as well.

I think Speights and Scarlett are both playing well. At this point I would much rather see either of those two guys playing healthy than Love playing injured.

RE: Bryce Love will play tonight - JustAnotherFan - 10-19-2018

Prediction: Love does not declare for the draft. Goes straight to medical school.

Also, prediction: Opposing coaches tell running back recruits that Stanford will not protect their draft stock (either by playing them when hurt, or not having a line capable of protecting them behind the LOS).

I mean, 3.8 and 3.3 yards per carry is not what I would say is "playing well" in a running back, though my suspicion is that is the offensive line's doing and not the fault of Speights or Scarlett.  I mean, Love is averaging 4 yards per cary, which is hardly all that much better, and is less than half of what he averaged last year, much of it on a gimpy ankle.

So Bryce Love is Moonlight Graham?

Quote: Ray Kinsella: Fifty years ago, for five minutes you came within... y-you came this close. It would KILL some men to get so close to their dream and not touch it. God, they'd consider it a tragedy.

Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham: Son, if I'd only gotten to be a doctor for five minutes... now that would have been a tragedy.

Indeed Speights did. It was a necessary block, because KJ would not have had enough time without it. This is an area where he has improved. That said, I think Scarlett is better, partly because he is heavier. Speights almost missed the guy on that play. Speights also has some problems with getting overpowered quickly.

RE: Bryce Love will play tonight - StanfordMatt - 10-19-2018

Am I the only who thinks that Speights has looked significantly better than Scarlett? Honestly, I didn't even think it was a question until I read some of the replies in this thread.
