Stranger things have happened.

LOL USC fans thought he was a joke and he has no love for them after being fired by them. Wilcox appreciates the fact Cal gave him his first head coaching gig too.

Isn't it nice to think that a coach would appreciate the school that gave him his first head coaching job. (Yes, I'm still PO'd at Voldemort.)

Let’s run a fake punt. We’re only ahead by 80 points.

No, I don't think that happens.  Even though I was predicting Helton's ouster after their loss to the Bruins yesterday, I would wager that USC gives their current coach one more year.  If the team flops again next year, then Helton is toast.

As for Wilcox, I don't think he will be moving any time soon, and certainly not to USC.  He was canned by Helton after the the Pac-12 CCG against Stanford.  Helton apparently asked Wilcox who had been assigned to cover McCaffrey on his 28-yard scoring strike in the 4th quarter to put the game essentially out of reach; and Wilcox, the defensive coordinator, answered "I don't know".  That was the end of his career as a Trojan.  So there is no love between those two; and I am certain that Cal's victory over USC this year was probably the most gratifying for Wilcox.

At most schools, a coach who won the Rose Bowl one year and the Pac-12 championship the next wouldn't be canned after one bad year, especially when you consider the fact that his star QB left early for the NFL and he went out and recruited the best HS QB in the nation. U$C, of course, may not be most schools.
FWIW here's on opinion on the top ten coaches to replace Helton if he is told to hit the bricks. Wilcox isn't on it.

They have poached conference coaches before. Larry Smith and Sark were both successful at their schools. Smith got them to a Rose Bowl but plateaued and Sark took to the bottle. Wilcox has created a small miracle at UC so jus sayin....

Even if Wilcox doesn't go to U$C, he's at most one more season from going somewhere else. Like Stanford was in most of the last 30 years until Shaw, Kal is a stepping stone job.

That's an interesting list of potential head coach candidates, including Hue Jackson, whom I did not realize had previously worked for USC.
Jack Del Rio, during his last years at Jacksonville and few years coaching the Raiders, seemed to lack energy and passion. He was a star athlete for USC, but that was almost 40 years ago.
I can imagine John Harbaugh would help the Trojans , but have no idea if he would want the job.

RE: Wilcox to $C? - BostonCard - 11-18-2018

Wilcox would be insane to take the USC coaching job.  I agree that Wilcox likely will get poached for a more prestigious job, but right now USC has a really bad combination of excessive expectations without the capability to dominate the conference as they had.  And I think Wilcox is smart enough to know that.

Meh, SC has the same capabilities it's always had. It's just been poorly coached for ages. I dunno if Wilcox is or isn't the proverbial guy, but a very good coach would turn it into a top-five school assuming reasonable luck.

Sc is now on its third post-Carroll coach, all of who have been duds.  So is the issue bad luck or something systemic at USC?  Or is it that “very good” coaches are rarer than you might expect?

Tedford changed all that. Cal knows how critically important it is to have a legit football program in terms of university finances. They aren't paying Wilcox much now, but are aware they must pay market rate for a coach.  Might as well be one who has had some success there.

College football coaches are not noted for their loyalty to the school that gave them their first head coaching job. More often the opposite.

Kal can do whatever it wants, but it's really gonna be up to Wilcox. If he wants a "prime time" job, he will leave.

RE: Wilcox to $C? - StanfordMatt - 11-18-2018

James Franklin should be on that list. Not sure if he would leave his home state and a good situation at Penn State but I bet Swann would make him say "no." Personality wise, he'd be a perfect fit at SC. You won't find a bigger self-promoter than Franklin and USC provides as big a stage as any for over-the-top egomaniacs.
