MBB vs Florida - JJJ - 11-22-2018

No score for over 3 minutes. Those black lights on the audience really are distracting.
2-0 right now. Davis subbed out early on a slip and being fallen on at an awkward knee angle. Hope it’s nothing serious.

Sharma continues on from yesterday with a dunk, then Pugh does his version with authority! Down 4-9 With about 12 to go in half.

RE: MBB vs Florida - BostonCard - 11-22-2018

We’ve scored four points in 9 minutes.  Might be a bit premature, but maybe Haase is not the answer.

RE: MBB vs Florida - JJJ - 11-22-2018

I was going to blame the depth perception issue, but Florida seems to have adjusted while we continue to miss badly. (Our first trey yesterday was an inadvertent bank shot!)

16 minutes in, we have 7 points and 0 pts by starters. I’ll watch but may not comment much more...

RE: MBB vs Florida - BostonCard - 11-22-2018

11 points with about 1 minute to go in the half.  Wow, the offense is sucking egg.

RE: MBB vs Florida - BobK - 11-22-2018

I think we’ll be much better after we have our first practice. We obviously haven’t installed an offense yet

Can’t wait until we practice.

This is terrible

RE: MBB vs Florida - BostonCard - 11-22-2018

13 points in the first half.  The game is unwatchable. Pugh did have a nice throw downs but ugh.

According to the announcers, two free throws with no time left on the clock prevented this from being the lowest scoring first half in Stanford history. 32-13 Florida.

And perhaps the only game where starters didn’t score in the half (Wills started and got the 2 FT)

I liked it better with Ron Tomsic and George Selleck.

RE: MBB vs Florida - Papa John - 11-22-2018

This team is really young and talented, but not NBA-talented. They are clearly out of their element in the Bahamas, but I think they will improve over the course of the year and be even better next year. As ugly as this was, I vote that we give Haase through 2019-20 to right the ship.

I know that folks have seen this before, but Haase's record at UAB:
Year 1: 16-17 overall, T-7th in CUSA
Year 2: 18-13 overall, T-8th in CUSA
Year 3: 20-16 overall, T-4th in CUSA but won the CUSA tournament and made the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Year 4: 26-7 overall, 1st in CUSA but lost in the CUSA tournament and flamed out in the NIT vs BYU.

I understand that CUSA is not the Pac-12, but I still think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Last year was (slightly) better than Haase's first year at Stanford, and there is a lot of basketball left to play in 2018-19.

I give it one more year beyond that: '20-'21. Haase's first year as HC didn't include his own recruits - the incoming freshmen were Pugh and Stanback, recruited by Dawkins. I want to wait until the team is entirely Haase recruits.

RE: MBB vs Florida - Austroturf - 11-23-2018

The way we looked against North Carolina, Wisconsin and Florida does not give me much optimism for when conference play starts.  It's no shame to lose these games, but we weren't even competitive.

RE: MBB vs Florida - OutsiderFan - 11-23-2018

Cal was more impressive in losses against St. Johns and Temple last week, and Cal fans are calling for Jones to be fired in his second season.  Haase is in his third, with what I thought was suppose to be higher rated recruits than the Bears have. Stanford couldn't score even 50 points its first two games in Bahamas. This isn't a team that wants to play Virginia tempo.

I had high hopes for Haase based on what he did at UAB, but it seems the only improvement from last year is the FT%. Aside from that, they simply can't shoot, not from outside, not from inside.  Nobody on the roster can finish with any consistency at all. Wouldn't be so bad if they could defend. But they can't do that either.

Apparently we were only down two to Wisconsin with six minutes left. So you would have to say we were reasonably competitive in that one.
It does look a little bleak for the season, though. No denying that.

RE: MBB vs Florida - needle - 11-23-2018

Didn't see any of the Florida game, but there were long stretches where Stanford actually looked OK against both North Carolina and Wisconsin.

RE: MBB vs Florida - burger - 11-23-2018

I think a few things are going on here the last few games.

First, we faced some ridiculously good defenses the last few days.  Per Ken Pomeroy, UNC is 16th, Wisconsin 15th, Florida 7th.  I think we're finally noticing Travis' absence--we don't have anyone we can feed to carry the offense when others aren't hitting shots or getting open.  It may take longer before we settle into a new offensive identity (though it's on Haase to figure that out).

Second, I'm guessing that 90+% of our playing time is going to freshman and sophomores.  There are going to be inconsistency and rough stretches with non-one-and-done underclassmen getting that much playing time.   I suspect there were some nerves issues the last 2 games especially.

We are just 5 games into a new season and still figuring out how to replace our top 2 scorers.  Give it a little more time.  If we are still playing like the last 2 games in late January, then maybe calls for ditching Haase are warranted.  But not yet.

RE: MBB vs Florida - 81alum - 11-23-2018

I've tuned in to a couple of the men's games now.  I was happy to see us playing yesterday, but I could only stand about 15 minutes before turning it off.  I won't give up entirely, though, and will check back in from time to time this season to see if our men are making some progress.

Exactly! Although it hurt, Travis' absence was supposed to open up the door more to what JHaase wants the style of play to be. I haven't seen improvement of our key players over last year, except for Okpala in the games vs. weaker opponents at home. Once we play major conference teams, we shrivel up and play like a mid-major, a mediocre one, so far.

We don't end up playing a major conference team in the Bahamas. I expect us to dominate this game and win by double-digits.

I expected us to make the dance even without RT. That's still my expectation, but it is now very much in doubt. We need someone to rise and be the "go to" guy on the team when we need a bucket.

You could see the worry of opposing players when they knew Travis was getting the ball, and they would need to try and stop his bull rush to the bucket last year. He pushed around the AZ center and broke the UCLA's center's nose. That was dominating and reliable when we needed a bucket. We don't have it this year, and we need that reliable option.

IIRC, Travis was an excellent HS QB. I wonder how we would have done if he had been our QB in 2016-2017. He certainly would have been physical.

So was Michael Humphrey, actually.
