Stanford vs Pitt in the Sun Bowl (12/31) -

Sun bowl again. I was hoping for one in CA so I could attend, oh well.

Oregon plays Michigan State in the Redbox Bowl in Santa Clara. Michigan State on offense at the end of the year was an absolute disaster (as they barely survived at home against hapless Rutgers), lost at Nebraska 9-6, and got blown out by Ohio State, only scoring 6 points again against another suspect defense. Oregon will win that game by a mile if Herbert plays. If not, I still think, given how they played against Oregon State with Burmeister by emphasizing running the football, they will still win comfortably if they are motivated.
I fully expect/hope Stanford would dominate either opponent, but perhaps Pitt would give us a better game. Barring another significant injury in the Sun Bowl (god forbid, of course), I would hope we would at least win by a similar margin to yesterday's game (14 points or so, with a possible late score).

Pitt's offense is a little bit better than Cal's.
If Stanford goes into the game making it a shootout, Stanford should win easily.

The late December date for the game was important as the Las Vegas bowl would have been too soon.
A lot of cities really don't care about the bowl game and/or have bigger bowl games in town later (see Cheez-It Bowl). The citizens of El Paso really appreciate the Sun Bowl game and the teams.
I would think those Monday games will get decent ratings as a number of Americans opt to take the day off to create a 4 day weekend.
Should be fun. Better than the bowl games that USC and UCLA get. ;)
8-4 Season
9th straight Big Game win
Kings of California
Undefeated against all teams outside of the CFP Top 20
Sun Bowl Invitation
It is amazing that 2018 is considered a disappointment by many.

Per S&P this is a matchup of #27 vs #67, #22 offense vs #64 defense, #51 defense vs #67 offense. It really seems like we should win handily, except that bowl games can be weird.
(Cal is #64 S&P, to give a comparison.)

Their defense is also decidedly worse than Cal's, especially against the run. Agreed - D should only need a few stops or a key turnover or 2 in order to win.

The problem with this bowl match-up is that we have little to gain from it and plenty to lose. OK, we are not ranked, so we cannot drop out of the top 25 if the game goes pear-shaped on us (for whatever reason); but a victory will also probably not move us into the Top 25 unless a bunch of teams ahead of us in the rankings lose. This is reminiscent of the game two years ago when we faced North Carolina and barely survived thanks to Solomon Thomas's sack of Tubrisky on the two-point conversion at the end of the game. In fact, North Carolina was actually more highly-ranked than Pitt, so the match-up was more even. We were also in the top 20 at 9-3 and ended the year 12th in the AP poll at 10-3. Our one extra loss this year will probably leave us on the outside looking in even if we move to 9-4 after the Sun Bowl.
Anyway, I prefer it when we face a highly-regarded opponent with a ranking that will actually burnish our reputation if we win and not cost us so much if we are on the wrong side of the score. Beating Pitt will give us a 9th win, but not a lot more.
Looking at the Pac-12 bowl line-up, I would predict the following:
UW loses to Ohio State
WSU vs. Iowa State: Cougs win
Utah vs. Northwestern: the Utes win if they get Moss and Huntley back. If not, Northwestern wins
Oregon vs. Michigan State: Oregon wins
Stanford vs. Pitt: Stanford prevails
Cal vs. TCU: Hard to say, but Cal has good chances if they can generate a bit of offense and get a few takeaways. TCU is not the team we played last year.
ASU vs. Fresno State: I like the Bulldogs in this one.
So the Pac-12 could go 4-3 or 3-4 this bowl season, which would be an improvement over last year. Stanford should be one of the wins. Go Cardinal!

Moss and Huntley are out for the year for Utah. However, Thorson is very turnover prone, and that Utah defense could have a field day (like they did against Costello with the pick-six).
I also think Iowa State could be a tricky matchup for Wazzu if their defense is not ready. Iowa State's QB is outstanding, and they have a great RB and an All-American WR. Would not be surprised if Iowa State upset Wazzu. That game will be a track meet on the Alamodome surface per usual.
UW definitely loses to Ohio State, I will say Wazzu wins against ISU, Utah beats Northwestern, Oregon beats Michigan State (by a mile), Stanford beats Pitt (hopefully, by a mile too), TCU beats Cal (Cal too limited offensively), and Fresno State beats ASU.

Stanford is playing a team that was in the ACC championship game. That will get their attention. And Stanford isn't a big reward for Pitt, is it?
As for Pac-12 W-L, I'll guess:
Rose: L (OSU too much offense for UW)
Alamo: W (ISU is good, but Leach will be on a mission)
Holiday: W (Utah will physically overpower NU)
Sun: W (Pitt is not scary)
Red Box: W (Michigan State really sucks and will get crushed by Ducks)
Vegas: W (ASU is just better)
Cheez it: L (Don't think Cal can score enough)
So I'm going to say the Pac-12 wins 5/7 bowl games.

Hmmm, these are predictions ranging from 5-2 to 2-5. I would like to see the 5-2 simply to bolster the conference's reputation, but I still think it's going to be a split (4-3 or 3-4). And that will not allow us to crow about our poor bowl fortunes. The SEC got 4 NY6 bids (Peach, Cotton, Fiesta and Sugar). That Fiesta bowl bid was stolen from Wazzu. But if we don't dominate the bowls we have, we won't have much room to complain. How about 6-1???

Herbert is officially playing for Oregon (reported today). Unless Oregon literally does not care, there is no way I can see Michigan State beating them. They were so bad offensively at the end of the year that they easily would have missed a bowl had they performed this way earlier in the season. Our miracle comeback against Oregon would be more stunning than a MSU win, but this would be almost a Buster Douglass-Mike Tyson level upset if MSU won.

Better to call it "The Pop Warner Bowl"
Pop Warner coached both Pitt (1915-23, record 60-12-4) and Stanford (1924-32, record 71-17-8).
Warner's team won "National Championships" for Pitt in 1915, 1916, and 1918, for Stanford in 1926.
I expect the game to be higher scoring than the first three games combined......
Stanford is 1-2 all-time against Pitt, including a 7-6 win over the Panthers in the 1928 Rose Bowl Game. Pitt won the first meeting in California, 16-7, on Dec. 30, 1922, and the most recent meeting, 7-0, on Nov. 26, 1932, in the Steel City.

for these reasons, i think we should take the Panthers seriously.
they beat a team that is currently ranked in the top 20, and they very nearly beat Notre Dame in South Bend.
