Oh, and SJS leading 28-27
Ouch.
This shouldn't be close, let alone see us trailing. Tough news on Ryan.

Davis has 9 points with 10:55 left and Stanford up by 1.

61-58 at the under 8 time out. We're leading, which is better than, say, trailing, but, uh, not too good.

They pulled away late but then almost gave it away in the final 2 mins. Lead was down to 3 in the final minute.
I had hoped the last 10 mins vs. EWU was a sign that the rust was shaken off. Apparently not.
Still looking for more consistent quality play than we've seen for the last ten years...conference play starts in just over 2 weeks.

Josh Sharma is a fouling machine. Dude is averaging a foul every <5 mins this season.

Come on Bob. The last two games were against bad teams. They played down to the level of their opponent. Even if Davis hadn't played a minute this should've been a 10-point halftime lead and 15-point win.
Let's hope they play up to the level of their next opponent. USF is going to be a strong indicator of whether this team could be near the top of the conference or is headed for another year in the Not Important Tournament.

Not just this season. His entire career. I really hope Kisunas' development accelerates and that by the end of the year he's starting. I like what I've seen from him even though he's raw. If Sharma is the starter all year this will be another year of Mediocrity at Maples

Just wondering if NIT games are "meaningless exhibition" games? If minor bowls are I assume they would be too. I wonder when we will see someone who has NBA ambitions sit out for fear of injury.

I think you know where I stand on "meaningless" games. I hope this doesn't happen, but I think you're right that it's only a matter of time. We're only a few years into this trend in football. I see no reason it won't bleed into other sports.

The injury rate in most sports is much lower than football.
If a prospect really is concerned about injury after a 30-40 game season, then they probably are not draft worthy for the 82 game (plus more for playoffs) NBA season.

Line started out at -20. I can't find great comprehensive stats at the moment but my offhand impression is that Haase has been underachieving relative to the bettors' expectations. Of course, what we really care about is winning, but sustained inability to beat the line suggests underperformance at a team level -- which in turn suggests the Haase regime is not sound.

Well, if you can establish that is true, it might be worth discussing.
It is indeed complicated what it might mean. Of course part of a coach's job is to have the team doing well enough that bettors' expectations are high. Though so far one might think that wouldn't be a primary reason Haase's teams would have underachieved versus the betting line.

The team is 6-3-1 against the spread (exactly +18 @ UNC). See "betting view" here if you're curious:

I couldn't find further back than this, but in our last 20 regular season games last season we were 13-7 against the spread.

Ah, interesting, well, then, I was wrong.
To circle to CTCard's point, the statistic is definitely a very circumstantial one. For example, in another sport, you often see name-brand schools do just OK against the spread (e.g. Nick Saban is 54% ATS at Alabama) relative to their actual quality. That's probably due to it being difficult to exceed Everest-high expectations. So my maybe-casual belief is that performing well (or poorly) against the spread is a decent first-pass metric to see whether the hoi polloi are performing well or badly against their underlying quality.

Yes, it is very hard to beat the spread consistently, because the spread adjusts over time to take into account the fact that a team consistently beats the spread. Conversely, a team that consistently underperforms the spread will see the spread lowered in response.
You might look at correlation between recruiting rankings and outcomes a few years later.

Certainly that'd be another good metric. But, I dunno man, the more good metrics the merrier.
