2019 Football signing day - lex24 - 12-19-2018

I know there is a section devoted to this, but there are about 700 posts. For those of us that don’t follow recruiting can we get a general overview.

I saw 17 commits so far. No QB. No d lineman. Is that the case? Overall how does it look

RE: 2019 Class - washingtonismoney - 12-19-2018

The expectation is that Pakola will grow into a DL, so not quite 100% accurate that there are no linemen. But there are no QB; Shaw et al tried and swung at a couple of elite dropback guys, but didn't make it a true priority. I think that was a mistake.

The class overall is at the low end of solid.

Here is my summary of the class.
1) Where we needed depth at OL and DBs, we are getting it. Not necessarily superstars but 5 solid players in each set.
2) A couple stud WRs who could play early and often (Higgins and Bowman)
3) A stud RB who could play early and often (Jones)
4) 3-4 linebackers that very well could play as frosh with OLB/DE Pakola, OLB Herron and Sinclair at ILB (where we could be desperate next year if Barton leaves) and possibly DiCosmo who was interestingly listed by Stanford as OLB/ILB
5) Missed out on a QB and an elite TE in the mold of Schultz, Smith, Parkinson but did pick up a TE from Cal.

RE: 2019 Class - needle - 12-19-2018

Rivals has the class ranked as 17th nationally.

Link: https://n.rivals.com/team_rankings/2019/all-teams/football

This is maybe a dumb way of looking at things. But because Stanford often has a four or even five-star QB recruit, I'm impressed that the class is ranked so highly without such a QB commit.

However, I'm also wondering if Stanford's ranking is likely to drop as some top recruits wait until Feb. to sign. Is Stanford in the hunt for anyone who is going to sign in Feb.?

A check of the Rivals database shows the last recruiting class w/out a QB was in 2015 and ranked 18th nationally.

I don't think it was a great class, but I would at least call it a good one.
We didn't try real hard to sign a QB until it was too late. I think if we had aggressively gone after Hilinski early we might have been able to get him, although due to the family tragedy I can understand their desire to get a fresh start in a new locale.

Well, that's not quite right. Stanford tried very hard for JT Daniels and was even believed to be the leader at one point. Obviously he went with SC, which, fine, whatever, you win some, you lose some. The approach post-Daniels was the problem: the coaches seemed to be kicking the tires with a bunch of guys but never got around to offering until Hilinski, deep in the year. It was a worst of all worlds approach and now the team's got a good returning starter in Costello and big question marks with West and Mills. If fortunate, the team might be able to squeeze through without incident. If not, there'll be problems.

Herron also listed as a WDE. I was so excited when I saw his tape. Can see why he was our top defensive prospect according to 24/7.

Higgins has great hands, and maybe his tape on gostanford didn't do him justice, but he looks like only a redzone player at this point (JJAW successor on end-zone fades?). His tape didn't demonstrate, imho, a whole lot of speed, in part because his running motion seemed a bit inefficient.

Sinclair's tape is fantastic (both speed and sure tackling), and he should provide some much needed speed at the ILB position that at times has been lacking.

Austin Jones looks like a surefire play as true frosh candidate. Honestly, his tape looked so good (he looked like a college RB already), I would not be shocked if he started as a true freshman.

Bowman also looks like a surfire play as a trush frosh candidate. His route running is great, and the speed is world class. Future matchup nightmare for opposing secondaries.

Do people who follow recruiting think this data is anywhere close to accurate? Not surprised to see Stanford at the bottom of the list.

The highlights I saw on Higgins showed him beating a lot of people deep, as well as making some JJAW out jump the defender kind of catches.
Based on that anyway, he looked to have pretty decent speed.

Yeah, that's true. I forgot about JT. Putting all your eggs in one basket in recruiting isn't a good idea, though.
Interesting that JT said he wasn't even considering U$C; his main interests were Stanford, Washington, and Michigan. He figured, however, that he might as well look at U$C because it was so close to him. He said when he visited he fell in love with the place. The Condoms do seem to give good visit.

Shaw on the incoming class:

http://www.facebook.com/stanfordfootball/videos/353309162121963/

*EDIT: interesting he was talking about his QB selection theory around the 16minute mark.

Quote of the day: "Star ratings are like pre-season ratings. They should print them on toilet paper so they get some use."

Both Bryce and Trenton "had every intention of playing the (next) game." "I'm heartbroken."

"Excited at Bryce Love and Christian McCaffrey hanging out at the Pro Bowl together."

Is there a link to the Shaw presser, not carried on an espionage platform that at best violates the privacy of anyone who comes in touch with it?

There is no way in hell I am going to open any Facebook link ever again. It's shameful that Stanford still uses the software developed by such a socially reckless and irresponsible company.

RE: 2019 Football signing day - JJJ - 12-19-2018

I guess this article might be ok in this thread (or another one about Larry Scott's job performance):

Quote:Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told the Athletic on Tuesday that he’s open to discussing expanding college football’s playoff from four to eight teams. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby previously expressed similar interest. An eight-team playoff would almost assuredly include automatic bids for major conferences and thus end the Power Five leagues being left on the outside of the sport’s grandest stage.
Still uncommitted though is Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, and it is, perhaps, the most curious of opinions. It’s not just that for the third time in five years, the Pac-12 didn’t make the playoff.
It’s what’s about to happen on Wednesday as college football’s early signing period begins.
The Pac-12, with the exception of Oregon, is going to get drubbed.

Don’t own Facebook. Don’t use Facebook. Give me a break. If you don’t like Facebook, keep it to yourself just like where you eat dinner and who your BFF is. This is a sports blog. Let’s talk sports. But of course each of us is free to do and post as he pleases and no one made me read yours, so my fault.

I just had an excellent homemade turkey burger, haven't messaged my best friend in a little bit (thanks for the reminder), and am excited about the potential of this recruiting class's skill positions and back 7 in particular.

RE: 2019 Football signing day - Phogge - 12-19-2018

I used to go to bed at midnight but signed the senior citizen contract and it is 10 now. OMG I have about 1200 BFF’s but I can’t remember their names. FYI I am having trouble remembering what I had for dinner. What is Facebook?

RE: 2019 Football signing day - BobK - 12-20-2018

However Phogge could tell us whonwas the Braves 1962 SS. Lol

RE: 2019 Football signing day - Phogge - 12-20-2018

LOL? Roy McMillian, over from the Reds to take Johnny Logan’s job. My dad and I gave Logan a ride back to the Sheraton Palace after a day game at Seals. He told us that Fred Haney was senile.

Bobbbbbb, who was the #3 guy in the rotation after Spahn and Burdett? Who was the first reliever and what kids game did he play in the clubhouse?

RE: 2019 Football signing day - BobK - 12-20-2018

Bob Buhl. Worse hitting pitcher ever

First reliver? Heck I thought Logan was the SS. OTOH I was in bed by 8:30. Of course the grandkids 5 and 7 wore me out
