Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals -
ColoradoTree - 02-06-2019
Indoor Nationals is finally here, this Friday through Monday in Seattle, Washington. Matches will be held at both the Nordstrom Tennis Center (on UW's campus) and at the Seattle Tennis Club.
The details
It's a single-elimination tournament with a consolation draw, and a guarantee of three matches, so if you lose the first two, you'll get an added match with another team. The top 8 teams are seeded and placed in a traditional bracket format, and their first-round opponents are drawn at random. Everyone will get three matches except for the two teams who reach the championship, who get four.
Washington qualified as the host school, while the other 15 teams made it through a 4-team regional (ITA Kick-Off Weekend) a couple of weeks ago.
The draws
(1) Stanford (3-0) vs. #18 LSU (6-0)
(8) Texas (3-1) vs. #12 Northwestern (3-2)
(4) Vanderbilt (3-1) vs. Washington (5-0)
(5) Georgia (3-0) vs. #14 N.C. State (6-0)
(3) Duke (5-0) vs. #16 Ohio State (3-1)
(6) Pepperdine (2-0) vs. #10 Syracuse (4-2)
(2) UNC (6-0) vs. #9 Oklahoma State (4-3)
(7) UCLA (4-0) vs. #15 South Carolina (4-1)
Losses in that group:
Vanderbilt lost to UNC
Texas lost to Michigan
Oklahoma State lost to Duke, UCLA, and Arkansas
Syracuse lost to UVA and BC
Northwestern lost to Kansas and Vanderbilt
South Carolina lost to USC
Ohio State lost to Texas (but it was 4-3, with 4 singles matches going to a third set)

Order of Play:
Friday, February 8th (all times PT)
9am: Duke vs. Ohio State and Pepperdine vs. Syracuse
Noon: UNC vs. Oklahoma State and UCLA vs. South Carolina
3:30pm: Stanford vs. LSU and Texas vs. Northwestern
6:30pm: Vanderbilt vs. Washington and Georgia vs. N.C. State
Analysis:
No draw at Indoor Nationals is an easy one, but being the #1 seed has some advantages. As far as first round matches go, Stanford gets #18 LSU, who is undefeated, but who has also not really been challenged yet (LSU beat a just-OK Clemson team in the first round of ITA Kickoff Weekend, and then got Tennessee, who had upset Florida State the day before). After all the worrying about whether we'd get some repeats of some regular season matches at this tournament, we could play Texas and Vanderbilt consecutively in this tournament, when we'll see them at Taube in the next few weeks anyway. That's something of a disappointment, but wins in those matches will still be really valuable for our ranking.
Stanford may be the #1 seed, but nobody has a better win this season than UNC, who beat #2 Vanderbilt in Nashville. Not much of a dark horse pick to guess the #2 seed might win the tournament, but they look to have it together this year.
If you made me pick the bracket, I'll take chalk in the first round (Texas is the only seed I think might get upset), and that's where things get interesting. Duke-Pepperdine and Vanderbilt-Georgia in particular should both be terrific matches. I'll never pick against Stanford, but this will be a fun ride.

Rankings Update
Team:
No new ITA team rankings this week, but the USTA's rankings are out, with Stanford holding onto the top spot there:
https://www.usta.com/en/home/stay-current/national/tennis-channel-usta-college-top-25--feb--6--2019.html
Elsewhere in the Pac-12, UCLA is #5, USC is #20, and Cal is tops in the "others receiving votes" group, so effectively #26.
Singles:
New ITA singles rankings out this morning, and it looks like they finally counted Northwest Regionals, but more than that, Stanford has
eight players in the rankings, and that's just nasty:
14. Emily Arbuthnott (up from 16)
23. Michaela Gordon (up from 103)
37. Janice Shin (up from 51)
44. Emma Higuchi (down from 38)
46. Melissa Lord (up from unranked)
57. Caroline Lampl (up from unranked)
68. Niluka Madurawe (up from unranked)
80. Sara Choy (up from unranked)
Doubles:
11. Lampl/Yee (down from 7)
13. Arbuthnott/Gordon (steady)
28. Yee/Madurawe (up from unranked)
31. Lord/Madurawe (up from unranked)

If we emerge from the tournament still holding onto the #1 ranking, we'll have earned it!
My sense from watching bits of our preceding matches is that we are still in early season form, so I'm hoping everyone else is, too. Maybe a slight disadvantage for us vs. teams that have already practiced and played a lot indoors.

Quick LSU preview:
Lineups
The Tigers are top-heavy, with just one ranked singles player (#19 Eden Richardson) and one ranked doubles team (#6 Golovin/Richardson), though that doubles team is the defending NCAA champion. Aside from Gordon at #1 and Lampl/Yee at #1 doubles, however, we have the advantage on the remaining courts. While it's still early and we could see a little movement in the lineups from what they've had the last few matches, this is our established order and LSU's Kick-Off Weekend lineup:
Singles
1. #23 Gordon (9-5, 1-0) vs. #19 Eden Richardson (11-3 overall, 2-1 duals)
2. #46 Lord (9-5, 2-0) vs. Jessica Golovin (7-4, 4-0)
3. #57 Lampl (11-6, 2-0) vs. Taylor Bridges (10-5, 5-0)
4. #14 Arbuthnott (16-3, 3-0) vs. Kennan Johnson (12-4, 3-0)
5. #37 Shin (13-2, 3-0) vs. Paris Corley (13-3, 5-0)
6. #44 Higuchi (10-2, 1-0) vs. Anna Loughlan (3-5, 1-0)
Doubles
1. #11 Lampl/Yee (8-4, 2-0) vs. #6 Golovin/Richardson (11-2, 4-1)
2. #13 Arbuthnott/Gordon (6-3, 1-0) vs. Johnson/Loughlan (6-4, 1-1)
3. #31 Lord/Madurawe (5-1, 3-0) vs. Bridges/Corley (9-3, 3-1)
Season to date
LSU is 6-0, but their lone ranked win is 4-1 over #24 Tennessee, which wasn't yet ranked when LSU played them. Other than that, though, they've handily beaten a few respectable-but-not-great teams (Rice, Clemson, Tulane, USF) and a cupcake (Southern). I believe they've played all of their matches outdoors so far, so there shouldn't be any sort of indoor competitive advantage.
Of course, we haven't really been tested yet, either, with wins against overmatched teams from St. Mary's, Washington State, and Princeton. So far, LSU has had the tougher schedule, but that's just a matter of degree--both haven't been strong, but ours has been weaker. That all changes this weekend, though.
Analysis
We're better, and we're deeper. Gordon will, as always, have the biggest challenge, and Lampl/Yee won't play many better doubles teams this year, but I'd expect us to get the doubles point behind wins at #2 and #3, and then get three more points from somewhere between #2 and #6 singles. FYI, Paris Corley played #3 singles for Arizona last year when we played them, and Lampl led her 6-4, 5-1 when the match was abandoned. The year before, she played at #2 singles when we played Arizona, and she pushed Caroline Doyle to a third-set tiebreaker, which Doyle won. The talent is certainly there to push Shin, so we'll see if she has more success further down in the lineup. But overall, I just don't see a reasonable path to four points for LSU, so a Stanford loss would be a stunning upset. Higuchi hasn't been the first off court yet this year, so she's due--I'll predict the doubles point, and then wins from Higuchi, Arbuthnott, and Lampl to clinch a 4-0 win.
LSU signed Ann Li, last year's top recruit, in what was seen as a recruiting coup, but Li chose not to enroll and is trying the pro tour instead. Golovin is the team's lone blue chip recruit, three others were 5-star recruits (Bridges, Johnson, and Corley), and Richardson and Loughlan are both Brits and thus not included in the recruiting rankings.
One last rankings note
No one else has 8 ranked singles players. Vanderbilt has 6 (so, their entire lineup), UNC, Georgia, and Michigan have 5, and Duke, Texas, Cal, and Oklahoma State all have 4. That won't last, as Choy and Madurawe slowly drop off the rankings due to a lack of matches, but it shows that our depth is unmatched. Injuries happen, so to be in a position where we could still be a championship-caliber team even after losing two or three starters is a testament to the marvelous job of roster building that Lele Forood has done here.
Pac-12 ranked singles players:
14. Emily Arbuthnott
18. Elysia Bolton (UCLA)
23. Michaela Gordon
24. Salma Ewing (USC)
28. Olivia Hauger (Cal)
37. Janice Shin
41. Julia Rosenqvist (Cal)
44. Emma Higuchi
46. Melissa Lord
55. Shweta Sangwan (Oregon)
57. Caroline Lampl
63. Michaela Bayerlova (WSU)
68. Niluka Madurawe
T72. Daniela Nasser (Oregon)
77. Abi Altick (UCLA)
80. Sara Choy
86. Danielle Wilson (USC)
87. Katarina Kopcalic (UW)
92. Anna Bright (Cal)
97. Stacey Fung (UW)
112. Maria Smith (Cal)
T115. Tiffany Mylonas (WSU)
T115. Melisa Ates (WSU)
117. Ayan Broomfield (UCLA)

The weather led UW to cancel all activities after 3pm, so today’s schedule has been moved up
and abbreviated, with the teams playing singles first and doubles only if needed to break a tie.
Stanford-LSU is now scheduled for 2pm; here’s the rest of the revised order of play:
8am: Duke vs. Ohio State and Pepperdine vs. Syracuse
10am: UNC vs. Oklahoma State and UCLA vs. South Carolina
Noon: Vanderbilt vs. Washington and Georgia vs. N.C. State
2:00pm: Stanford vs. LSU and Texas vs. Northwestern
Results:
Duke 4, Ohio State 3 (Ohio State is better than I thought they were, coming into this tournament).
Pepperdine 4, Syracuse 3
UNC 4, Oklahoma State 0
Vanderbilt 4, Washington 0
UCLA 4, South Carolina 3

UW has announced that Saturday's matches have been cancelled:
https://gohuskies.com/news/2019/2/8/general-washington-athletics-announces-weekend-schedule-changes.aspx
That creates a really unfortunate scheduling bind. Now you either double up to keep on track (playing the quarters and the semis on Sunday, or playing both the semis and the final on Monday), which isn't fair to the student-athletes, or you just push everything back a day, which means the semis are on Monday along with a host of added matches to get everyone to the three guaranteed matches, and everyone is missing classes on Monday.
Obviously, the safety of everyone has to come first, but (1) the forecast I saw was 4-6 inches of snow, (2) the snow is supposed to end Saturday at noon, and (3) the event is indoors. I assume all the teams are staying relatively close to campus, so it seems like you should be able to get matches in Saturday evening. Of course, I live in Colorado (and used to live in Minnesota), so it's probably unfair to view Seattle's snow readiness through that lens, and I recognize that the hills in the area may complicate things if it gets too cold overnight. Seattle may not be at the top of the ITA's list for picking future sites for this event, though. If it were in Madison like last year, it's safe to say that 4-6 inches of snow and temperatures right around freezing don't result in any postponements.
Anyway, if they stick to the cancellations on Saturday, then I'd expect some very early Sunday morning starts if they're going to try and fit in a doubleheader for everyone.
In terms of what this means for Stanford-LSU, I think it probably slightly favors us. LSU might have had a chance if they'd gotten the doubles point and some momentum, but I don't see three singles wins for them. (Of course, I think we would've gotten the doubles point anyway, so now we don't get the benefit of putting them behind the 8-ball right off the bat. So maybe it goes the other way. But ultimately, we're better and deeper in singles, so this at least removes the reasonable possibility of us trailing 1-0 after doubles.)
This could complicate things for UCLA, Pepperdine, and South Carolina, who look to be very good in doubles this year. Of course, UCLA and South Carolina play each other, so we'll see! Oklahoma State is a good doubles team, too, and likely felt that taking that point against UNC was necessary to pull an upset, so this format change probably helps the Tarheels a bit. (UNC is one of the few best teams in the country, though, so I think they would've overcome losing the doubles point. Now they just won't have to.)
RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals -
ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019
In the early matches, Pepperdine-Syracuse is close, and Duke's early edge over Ohio State has been erased, that match has the potential to need the doubles point:
Duke 2, Ohio State 2: Dominating wins at #4 and #6 for Duke to start things off, but Ohio State bounced back, getting a big win at #1 in an all-freshman battle, and rolling in the third set on Court 3. Courts 2 and 5 are left, with Ohio State up 4-1 in the third set on #2 and having just forced a third set on #5. For a long time in this match, things favored Duke, but Ohio State did an excellent job of turning things around.
Syracuse 1, Pepperdine 1: Shockingly easy win for Syracuse's Knutson (the preseason #5) over Ashley Lahey (the preseason #4) on Court 1; similarly routine win for Pepperdine on Court 4. But we're into third sets on Courts 2, 3, and 6, with Syracuse up an early break at #2, Pepperdine up a break on #6, and #3 level at 3-3 in the third. And Court 5 has Syracuse up a set but down a break in the second.
The concern, of course, is that the final two matches of the day might not get played if we have more matches like these that are competitive and push outside the 2-hour window allotted for each match. If we're slated for Nordstrom, then let's hope Syracuse-Pepperdine doesn't need the doubles point and the next couple of matches there are over quickly.

Pepperdine-Syracuse are edging ever closer to needing the doubles point today. It's hard to tell who to root for to make a strong comeback in their match based on what's happening simultaneously on the other courts.

Pepperdine - Syracuse is going to the doubles point.
Ohio State -Duke is, too.
The revised schedule is history now, will be far more than an hour behind. The next set of teams will need to be warming up on the open courts during the doubles point.
I wonder what the temperature is inside that large tennis structure.

Duke survives, 4-3, after winning handily on Courts 2 and 3 while losing handily on Court 1.
Looks like they're starting singles matches as courts open up. Really not ideal for team performance--you don't get as much team warmup and coaching time, and you're almost diving right into the singles matches, but everyone will face the same conditions, at least.
So, while doubles wraps up, the top 3 courts in both UCLA-South Carolina and UNC-Oklahoma State are getting going. UNC off to a quick start, taking the first set on Courts 1-3 and on the verge of getting the first point from Court 3, though Courts 4-6 have yet to start. UCLA's first sets at Courts 1 and 2 are on serve, while Broomfield took hers 6-1 on Court 3, though again, Courts 4-6 have yet to start.
Now that we're into a staggered start reality, I wonder whether they'll start the #1-#3 singles of the
third match while the #4-#6 singles part of the
second match is still going on. They should, since you're not going to play the doubles point unless all three of those 4-6 matches break a certain way. And if they do, you play the doubles point on
those courts while you can work in the #4-#6 singles of the third match on the courts their teammates just played on.
It's gonna get weird. It'll be more like tournament tennis than a proper dual match, and that stinks, because while we're not bad at individual tournament play, we really excel at dual matches.
And Pepperdine survives as well, so the rest of the UCLA-South Carolina singles matches should start shortly.

Stanford-LSU match now scheduled for 5 pm per the match score tracker.
RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals -
ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019
UNC 2, Oklahoma State 0
1. Jones (UNC) won 7-6, 6-4
2. Daavettila (UNC) won 6-3, 7-5
3. Graham (UNC) leads 6-2, 5-7, 4-3 (up a break)
4. Morra (UNC) leads 6-4, 3-2
5. Sanford (UNC) leads 6-4, 0-3
6. Aney (UNC) leads 6-3, 3-2 (up a break)
UCLA 2, South Carolina 0
1. Hart (UCLA) tied with Gamarra Martins (SC) 6-3, 3-6, 0-0
2. Bolton (UCLA) won 7-5, 6-3
3. Broomfield (UCLA) won 6-1, 6-1
4. Altick (UCLA) tied with Davies (SC) 3-3
5. Johnson (UCLA) and Chinellato (SC) tied 3-3
6. Miller (UCLA) leads 5-1
There are open courts, but they appear to be waiting to use them. UW and Vanderbilt are warming up as teams on those courts, so once that's done, you'll probably see the individual matches get going there.
I wonder if the 5pm schedule change was to bring the remaining matches to Nordstrom to avoid driving from the Seattle Tennis Club back to campus if roads get bad? Because UNC-Oklahoma State is at Nordstrom, and that match is a couple games away on either #4 or #6 from wrapping up, at which point UW-Vandy will start in earnest, while Georgia-N.C. State over at the Seattle Tennis Club will have to wait for more courts to open up, as UCLA-South Carolina isn't moving as quickly.
UNC rolls 4-0, adding Graham's 3-setter (6-3 in the third) and Aney's 6-3, 6-3 win at Court 6.
Meanwhile, UCLA's path to a third point seems clear enough (Miller leads 6-1, 4-0 on Court 6), but the other three matches are tight:
1. Gamarra Martins (SC) tied with Hart 3-6, 6-3, 4-4
4. Davies (SC) leads Altick, 6-4, 2-1
5. Chinellato (SC) leads Johnson, 7-6, 0-0
RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals -
ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019
UCLA 3, South Carolina 2, after Hart falls to Gamarra Martins at #1, and Davies quickly finishes off Altick, 6-4, 6-2.
That means Court 5 will determine whether doubles gets played, and that match is currently at 4-4 in the second set after South Carolina took the first.
Doubles for UCLA and South Carolina, as Chinellato wins on #5, 7-6, 6-4.
UW-Vandy might not last long, as Vanderbilt took all six first sets. At #1, Fung jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Contreras, but Contreras rattled off 5 straight to take the first set.
Second-set leads for Vandy on #1 and #4; on serve on #3 and #5; UW leads the second set on #2 and #6. With the pace that UCLA-South Carolina's doubles is going (to be clear, that pace is "glacial"), it's entire possible that Vanderbilt (the third match at Nordstrom) clinches a win before UCLA or South Carolina does (the second match at Seattle Tennis Club).
Vanderbilt 1, Washington 0
* Amanda Meyer beats Kenadi Hance 6-1, 6-0 on Court 4.
* Contreras has now won 10 straight games, up 6-4, 5-0 on Court 1
* Three Commodores are now serving for their matches: Contreras on 1, Drummy on 3, and Smith on 5.
And Vanderbilt sweeps UW 4-0 while the UCLA-South Carolina doubles point still rages on. Hart/Bolton won 6-2 on Court 2, while South Carolina just won 6-3 on Court 3. Andrews/Broomfield are serving, tied at 4-4.
Meanwhile, Stanford announces its match is moving *to* the Seattle Tennis Club at 5? Why not just stay at Nordstrom? It must be a University issue, since they cancelled events starting at 3pm (though that coincided with the abbreviated schedule earlier today, so they presumably planned on Stanford-LSU starting a little late). But instead, the courts at Nordstrom are empty, while over at the Seattle Tennis Club, UCLA and South Carolina
just finished with doubles, Courts #4-#6 of Georgia-N.C. State thus haven't even started yet, and there is still Texas- Northwestern to get through before Stanford-LSU can start. So, UW and the ITA was OK with Stanford-LSU going a little past the 3pm deadline but not a lot past it? *shrugs*
UCLA won the doubles point, by the way. South Carolina's good, but that would have been a disappointing loss for UCLA to take.
Georgia-N.C. State is competitive so far, so that one will probably need the doubles point, too. *rolls eyes*
RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals -
oldalum - 02-08-2019
According to the bracket, all remaining matches today are at Seattle TC. I'm guessing UW is closing the campus entirely.
UCLA won
