NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - Spiny_Norman - 03-19-2019

The 2 time defending national champion Cardinal are in the water for the 2019 championship meet Wednesday to Saturday this week. Stanford is currently the #1 team in the country followed by Cal. We can expect with a high degree of certainty that the NC meet will be closer than last year when Stanford dominated with Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel. Fortunately, Ella Eastin is back for her senior year.

Swimswam has the best preview - https://swimswam.com/2019-womens-ncaa-championships-official-swimswam-previews-index/

From the GoStanford preview:
» Stanford has the top seed in just two events entering the meet. Lauren Pitzer has the best seed time in the 500 free (4:34.30), while Ella Eastin had the only sub-four time in the 400 individual medley this year (3:57.75), and Brooke Forde owns the nation's second-best time in the event at 4:00.27.
» Freshman Taylor Ruck as the second-best time of the year in the 200 back (1:48.67).
» In the 200 fly, junior Katie Drabot is the No. 2 seed with a season-best time of 1:51.42, followed by Eastin's 1:52.07 which ranks third in the NCAA.

You can find a live stream for all preliminary events here. Finals on Wednesday and Thursday will be on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app, while ESPNU will provide coverage of Friday and Saturday night finals.

Thanks, Spiny.

I'm excited for this year's meet! I'm also really excited for Ella to get her due; she's so freaking amazing, but was often overshadowed by the incredible talents of Katie, Simone, and Ally.

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - Spiny_Norman - 03-19-2019

Ella Eastin is not only favored in the 200 and 400 IM events, she has the fastest time in the country in the 200 back, an event that she is not even swimming at nationals! I presume that Coach Meehan knows what he is doing.

Now where would you get a crazy idea like that? :)

The goal is to end the meet with more points than any other team, and there are multiple considerations Meehan has to take into account. He does not have unlimited flexibility in where to place swimmers: they have to qualify for the individual event, there is a limit to the number of events each swimmer can enter, and the days and order of events can affect scheduling. Meehan has to make a complex calculation about how to maximize the points we get as well as taking away points from our major competitors for the team title, and to do this he has to project a range where each potential swimmer is likely to place in each event. And there are probably some psychological calculations as well.

Stanford did better than expected on Day 1.  Cal is expected to take over the lead on Day 2, but Stanford is favored to get it back over Days 3 and 4.

Go Stanford!

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - oldalum - 03-20-2019

we're fourth from the bottom. Good thing it wasn't a close race!

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - ColoradoTree - 03-21-2019

In the prelims so far this morning:

* Stanford qualified fourth for the 200 (4x50) freestyle relay (we won it last year in NCAA record time). We had the 8th-fastest seed time coming in, so that's a nice improvement (they were 0.02 behind Tennessee for 3rd, but also just 0.01 ahead of Michigan, so it'll be extremely tight tonight).

* In the 500 free, Brooke Forde qualified second and Lauren Pitzer qualified sixth. Pitzer was the top seed coming into the event, while Forde was 20th--Forde swam 2.5 seconds faster in this event than she's ever swum in competition before (she seems to be hitting her taper!). Not sure what to think about Pitzer's swim, but it wasn't as fast of a heat, so hopefully she turns it on for finals. Morgan Tankersley came in 8th on the psych sheet but swam the 11th-fastest time, so she'll be in the B final. So will Katie Drabot, 39th on the psych sheet but with the 15th-fastest prelim time.

* In the 200 IM, Ella Eastin qualified in the top spot. She was 8th on the psych sheet coming in, but she's also the record holder, so there's a reason she's the favorite! She's also the only Stanford swimmer in either the A or B final, so we need that win for points.

* In the 50 freestyle, no Stanford swimmers qualified for the A final, but freshman Anya Goeders qualified for the B final.

* In the 400 medley relay, we did just enough to get into the A final, finishing 8th (we were 11th on the psych sheet, though I don't really know how we're expected to do beyond that).

* 1m diving prelims, too, but I don't know when exactly those will be.

In the interview above after her swim yesterday, Brooke says she was excited that in the 500 someone would be counting laps for her. Seems like it helped her focus exclusively on her swimming!

Stanford outperformed expectations for the day and holds a slim lead over UCB in the team points race.

That's good.  We were supposed to lose the lead today.

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - ColoradoTree - 03-22-2019

Leads don't get any slimmer! 173.5 to 173 is a bit close for comfort, but it's a relief that we're still projected to win (now by about 54 points over Cal), even though I believe we're still projected to lose the lead to Cal today (correct me if I'm wrong).

So, yesterday we had a surprise loss in the 200 IM (Ella Eastin is the record holder, but while she was the top seed coming in and dropped 0.65 seconds off her prelim time, she was still about a second behind Wisconsin's Beata Nelson, and about 1.14 seconds off Eastin's own NCAA record from last year).  But we counteracted that with a surprise win in the 500m (just an incredible swim from Brooke Forde), and got 3rd in the 200 free relay, which I believe wasn't entirely expected.  We got a handful of points from the 50 free (12th place), 1m diving (11th, 12th, and 16th places), and the 400 medley relay (6th), too.

This isn't last year's team, for sure. We don't have the same dominance in the relays and freestyle sprint events, but even without Katie Ledecky dusting the field in the 500, we still won that event.

Today's schedule (prelims in the following events in the morning, finals this afternoon/evening):

* 400 IM: Eastin and Forde are 1-2 on the psych sheet, with a few other swimmers (Szekely in 13th, Raab in 18th, Stevens in 28th, and Kukurugya in 30th) with a shot at making a final. In prelims this morning, Eastin and Forde went 1-2, and Raab made the A final in 7th place. No Stanford swimmers in the B final, but Szekely finished 18th. (No Cal swimmers in either final; they had the 10th seed coming in, but she scratched.)

* 100 Fly: Not our best event. Amalie Fackenthal was 48th coming in on the psych sheet, and finished 42nd after prelims. That's all. (Two Cal swimmers in the A final and one in the B final. The two in the A final were expected, but the one in the B final wasn't, so that'll be more Cal points than anticipated.)

* 200 Free: Coming in, Taylor Ruck was 5th on the psych sheet, Lauren Pitzer was 11th, Morgan Tankersley 22nd, and Katie Drabot 29th. Ruck had a great swim, dropping a second off her seed time coming in to qualify in second place. Pitzer finished 11th to make the B final, Drabot was 18th and Tankersley 23rd. The bummer is 3 Cal swimmers in the A final, though that was roughly anticipated--they had the 3rd, 6th, and 9th seeds coming in.

* 100 Breast: Indiana's Lilly King will win this one, of course, but hopefully we can score some points. Allie Raab was 21st on the psych sheet, Zoe Bartel 37th, and Grace Zhao 43rd. No finals, though, as Bartel finished 24th, Raab 28th, and Zhao 31st. Cal gets one swimmer into the A final, which will be bonus points for them--that swimmer came in seeded 26th.

* 100 Back: Taylor Ruck is 4th on the psych sheet, Lucie Nordmann is 13th, and Erin Voss is 23rd. (Cal, meanwhile, has the 2nd and 11th seeds coming in.)

* 200 Medley Relay: Stanford is 7th on the psych sheet.

* 3m Diving: No idea. I always feel like any points from diving are gravy, but we got 12 from 1m diving yesterday, and we needed every bit of that to keep the lead.

A good reminder of how young, scoring-wise, this team is. We obviously lose Ella Eastin after this year, which is a big, big loss, but:

* Our 3rd place 200 free relay team was three freshmen and a sophomore.
* Our A final swimmers in the 500 free (Forde in 1st, Pitzer in 6th) are both sophomores
* Our only 50m scorer (Goeders in 12th) is a freshman
* Our top two divers in the 1m scoring (Lenz in 11th and Sculti in 12th) are both freshmen
* Eastin is our top seed in the 400 IM, but Forde (2nd seed) is a sophomore and Raab (7th) is a freshman
* Our top 3 swimmers in the 200 freestyle are a freshman (Ruck in 5th), a sophomore (Pitzer in 11th), and another freshman (Tankersley in 22nd)
* Our top swimmer in the 100 breaststroke is a freshman (Raab in 21st).
* Our top two swimmers in the 100 backstroke coming in are both freshmen (Ruck in 4th, Nordmann in 13th).

Looking ahead to tomorrow:

* Our top two swimmers coming into the 200 backstroke are both freshmen (Ruck in 2nd, Nordmann in 5th)
* Our top swimmer in the 100 freestyle is a sophomore (Pitzer in 22nd)
* Our top three swimmers in the 200 breaststroke are a sophomore (Zhao in 5th) and two freshmen (Raab in 16th, Bartel in 21st)
* The 200 fly is an exception, with Drabot (a junior) and Eastin as our top two, but Forde isn't far behind in 9th.
* The 1650 free is an exception, with Stevens and Byrnes as our top two, though Tankersley is 14th.

But all in all, that is a ton of points coming from underclassmen. We obviously take a hit with Eastin, Stevens, and others leaving, but my goodness, that is an absurd amount of talent coming back next year.

This Greg Meehan guy seems to know his stuff a little bit, eh?

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - BobK - 03-22-2019

Per swim swam cal could be up 17 after tonight

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - Treefence - 03-22-2019

So far I have us +10 on our prelims compared to our psych sheet (+7 400 IM, +3 200 Free).  Waiting to see the results for the 100 Back as well, but it seems we should be above our psych sheet score on that too since we got 2 swimmers in the B final.

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - ColoradoTree - 03-22-2019

Yeah, looks like Ruck matched her seed coming in, finishing 4th, while Nordmann was 12th and Voss was 16th, so 1 in the A final and 2 in the B final is great.

Cal continues to have a great meet, though, getting two swimmers in the A final and one in the B final. The one in the B final was expected, but Izzy Ivey dropped over two seconds to make the A final in 5th place, when she came in 44th on the psych sheet. Ugh. I'm getting nervous.

One thing to keep in mind is that we have a decent amount of buffer space based on projections.  While Cal might be having a very good day today, they still have a while to go before they catch up to the amount we've outperformed our own expectations.  On top of that, the SwimSwam projections include diving in their projections.  Even though it's not worth that many points, we are expected to do better than Cal in this event.  In our head to head meet our 4 divers on the 3 meter dive all beat Cal's divers.  Obviously anything can happen, but things have gone very well for us so far.

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - Canalejas - 03-22-2019

According to swimswam Stanford stands to lose 16 points from its buffer due to the results in today's prelims, but still has a buffer of 38 points based on the psych sheet for tomorrow's events.

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - oldalum - 03-22-2019

looking at the A and B finals tonight, it seems clear that Cal will outscore us on the day.

Just perusing the prelim results, I'm surprised at the number of our swimmers who are trying to get in the B final in prelims but swim slower than their best time this year. Seems like tapered most swims should be at or under their best time, no? For those in the know, is this typical or unusual?

RE: NCAA Women's Swimming Championship - ColoradoTree - 03-22-2019

We just barely squeaked into the A final of the 200 medley relay in 8th place after prelims, so hopefully we improve on that place this evening.

I hear you on the buffer, but 38 points is a little close for comfort for me. I'm a little worried Eastin hasn't hit her taper based on the 200IM results and her relay splits (or, at least, she hasn't nailed it to the ridiculous degree she did last year when she blew away records).

I'll just be over here worrying until it's done and dusted....

Would the same group that swam the medley relay swim the final?
